Pakistan Super League - 7 (PSL-7) 2022

Another emphatic display by the Multan Sultans. They are indomitable at the moment, having defeated all five opponents in this year's edition now. Hunting down a gargantuan target of 223 runs was always going to be an uphill task for Peshawar Zalmi.

They started decently in the early phases of the powerplay. But it was Shahnawaz Dahani and Imran Tahir who broke the back of Zalmi's batting order with their three-wicket hauls. Zalmi's lower-order was left with a truckload of runs to accumulate but not enough time to play with.

Ben Cutting played well for his 52* off 31 to limit some damage but 57 runs is still a hefty margin. A lot to ponder over for them as far as their bowling and fielding are concerned.

United won by 42 runs

..........

Safe to say that Islamabad United have outclassed and outsmarted the Karachi Kings tonight. Chasing 178 runs on a slow strip like tonight's was always going to be an uphill task for a batting line-up that hasn't piled up the runs throughout this leg of the tournament.

They started sluggishly again and lost the whole of their top four in the first eight overs. It was, once again, the United skipper Shadab Khan who can't seem to put a foot wrong and to whom the bowling honors belong tonight as well. He scalped four preys in a spell where he leaked just 15 runs and took the sting out of the opposition's middle and lower orders.

Shadab was well supported by the rest of the attack and despite Mohammad Nabi's lusty blows at the rear-end, they have secured a comprehensive victory. Karachi, meanwhile, have now lost to each team at their home turf and it's just a miserably sorry-looking points table for them at the moment.

Islamabad United 177 for 6 (Stirling 39, Shadab 34, Jordan 2-36) beat Karachi Kings 135 for 9 (Nabi 47*, Shadab 4-15) by 42 runs

The PSL is halfway through, and Karachi Kings have one foot out of the tournament. The side that's hosted the first leg slumped to it's most spineless defeat in their final home game this season, with Islamabad United walloping Babar Azam's men by 42 runs. On a pitch that wasn't quite as free-scoring as most of the others on show so far this season, Islamabad United posted 177, thanks to a number of cameos from the top order.

The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on Monday decided to ease restrictions on the number of people allowed to attend matches during the upcoming Lahore leg of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2022.

In a statement, the NCOC said it has given the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) the go-ahead to allow spectators up to 50pc of the stadium's capacity in matches till February 15 while 100pc crowd occupancy has been allowed from February 16 onwards.

Previously, the NCOC had allowed up to 25pc occupancy during the Karachi leg of the tournament.

Jason Roy's heroics helped Quetta Gladiators thump Lahore Qalandars by 7 wickets in the 15th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season seven on Monday.

On the back of Roy's 57-ball 116, Quetta hunted down the target of 205 in 19.3 overs with 7 wickets in hand to become the only PSL franchise to overhaul a 200+ target thrice.

Batting first, Lahore made a smooth start to their innings with openers, Fakhar Zaman and Abdullah Shafique, scoring runs freely. Shafique (32) fell after the powerplay, but Fakhar continued to pile up runs.

The run rate slowed down in the middle with three quick wickets of Kamran Ghulam (19), Mohammad Hafeez (8), and Phil Salt (8).

However, Zaman (78), David Wiese (22), and Harry Brook (41 off 17) launched the onslaught in the final overs to take the total to 204/5.

In response, Roy provided much-needed firepower up front, banging every Lahore bowler out of the park. Quetta brought up their first 50 in just 3.2 overs, with Roy scoring 46 of them. He went on to smash a 49-ball hundred to bring down the asking rate, besides providing a platform for the middle-order to tee off in the latter part of the innings.

The right-handed batter departed in the 16th over, but Mohammad Nawaz (25 off 12) made sure he completed the job. James Vince remained not out of 49 of 38.

Points Table Update

With this win, Quetta Gladiators have obtained two valuable points, taking their total to four. They have now jumped one place to settle at fourth. Multan Sultans who have 10 points from five consecutive wins are still at the top.

Meanwhile, Islamabad United are placed second with 6 points, and Lahore Qalandars third with as many points.

Peshawar Zalmi have now gone down to the fifth place with four points, while Karachi Kings are reeling at the bottom of the table with five losses on the trot.

Next fixtures

There is a rare two-day gap in the PSL 7 as the tournament moves to Lahore for its second and final leg. The reigning champions Multan Sultans will take on Peshawar Zalmi when the action resumes on February 10 at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium.

PCB chairman Ramiz Raja promises 'great' matches in Lahore-leg of PSL 2022

National Command and Control Centre (NCOC) has allowed a 100% capacity stadium from February 16 onwards

By Sohail Imran

February 07, 2022

The Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Ramiz Raja has promised great matches in the Lahore leg of the seventh edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) at the Gaddafi Stadium.

Raja vowed "Lahore-leg matches of the PSL will be extraordinary" and requested the people of Lahore to march towards the stadium in maximum numbers".

The National Command and Control Centre (NCOC) has allowed a 100% capacity in the stadium from February 16 onwards.

Ramiz Raja said a good crowd will witness the exciting matches of PSL 7 at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.

"A good crowd will come to the stadium in Lahore, and now children under the age of 12 have been allowed too," Ramiz said.

"The cricket festival (PSL) is for children, and it made me immensely happy that the government permitted under-12 children to come to the stadium," he added.

Raja also shed light on the quality of the pitches in Pakistan and said that if the pitches are not good, cricket quality will not be good either.

The PCB chief said that the national governing body had planned a massive event for cricket fans but it couldn't be possible because of the looming threat of COVID-19.

Australia's tour of Pakistan

Talking about Australia's upcoming tour of Pakistan, Ramiz said that it will be a "big contest" as a strong Australian side will be touring Pakistan.

"A strong Australian team will come to Pakistan, and there will be good competition in the series.

"I hope that the Aussies will test us thoroughly to determine where we stand," he said.

Australian men's cricket team will be touring Pakistan for three Tests, three ODIs and a single T20I, the PCB confirmed on Friday.

Blistering Jason Roy 116 powers massive Quetta chase

Playing his first PSL game of the season, Roy put together a breathtaking array of big hits to almost single-handedly ace the chase

Jason Roy was in prime big-hitting form PSL

Quetta Gladiators 207 for 3 (Roy 116, Vince 49*) beat Lahore Qalandars 204 for 5 (Fakhar 70, Brook 41*) by seven wickets

It wasn't until tonight that perhaps the biggest name at this year's PSL made his season debut, but Jason Roy made it worth the wait. In an all-time T20 classic, the England opener blazed 116 off 57 balls in what was virtually a one-man chase of a target in excess of 200. By the time he had fallen, the Quetta Gladiators needed just 38 in 26 balls against Lahore Qalandars. James Vince and Mohammad Nawaz knocked those off with three balls to spare, and a game that had looked like Lahore Qalandars' at the halfway mark when they set 204 was wrenched out of their hands.

Roy made clear he meant business immediately and, in pursuit of an enormous target, that was precisely what the Gladiators needed. The cleanliness of the ball-striking was sensational, and the dazzling array of strokes he unleashed breathtaking. It might have been one of those YouTube compilations that try and capture a player in their most flattering light, but in this case, all of those strokes were coming in the same innings. A six and two fours off Shaheen Afridi in the first over signalled his intentions, and seven boundaries and three sixes off just his first 19 balls helped bring up a 20-ball half-century inside four overs. Ahsan Ali at the other end, with the best seat in the house, had faced just two balls till then, for one run.

And Roy kept going. Even Rashid Khan, brought on to stem the bleeding, wasn't spared, swept for six off his third delivery. He barely noticed when Ahsan Ali fell, or indeed that James Vince was at the other end, for Roy was batting at a level no one else had access to. Zaman Khan, Lahore hero the other night, was the whipping boy when Roy brought up his hundred with two devastating pick-ups over cow corner, the milestone coming in just 49 balls.

After he finally fell scooping one to short-fine leg off David Wiese, the Qalandars sniffed a comeback, but simply too much damage had been done to roll back. Mohammad Nawaz and Vince picked up the odd boundary whenever they needed one, and despite a tight 18th over by Afridi, the Gladiators had margin for error. A classy drive over extra cover for six from Nawaz brought up the remarkable win and, predictably, it was Roy everyone went to congratulate first.

All of that utterly overshadowed a first innings where the Qalandars managed a superb rearguard after a scratchy first half to post 204. Fakhar Zaman held the innings together up front without quite breaking away like he has the tendency to, but much of the top five weren't able to have anywhere near the same impact. Naseem Shah, Luke Wood and Ghulam Mudassar kept the batters on a leash, and when Phil Salt fell, the Qalandars were 124 for 5 with just 5.3 overs left.

A bit of acceleration from Fakhar brought up a 45-ball 70, but the real fireworks for his side would come in the form of a sixth-wicket stand between Wiese and Harry Brook. The last 20 balls went for 55 runs, 24 of them in one devastating Luke Wood 19th over, setting the Qalandars up for a total they hadn't looked like getting near for much of the innings.

At that stage it appeared as if the trend of sides defending scores was destined to continue, and against most sides it might well have done. But on a humid Karachi night lit up by an Englishman's brilliance, that streak would come to an end in sizzling style.
