LAHORE: The newly-appointed Lahore Qalandars’ captain Shaheen Shah Afridi vowed to do his best for the team during the seventh edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Speaking exclusively to Geo News, Afridi said that he always tried his best for Lahore Qalandars, adding that it was a matter of pride for him that he was leading a team from which he had started his PSL career.

Lauding his team, Afridi said, “Our openers are better and middle order is the best.” He said that he will try his best to improve his team.

“One should not take the impression that fast bowers are not fit for captaincy,” he said, adding that legendary fast bowlers Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, and others had been the captain of the national team.

A day earlier, the star fast bowler was named captain of the Lahore Qalandars for the seventh edition of the PSL starting January 27.

Lahore Qalandars CEO Atif Rana had announced that Shaheen Afridi would lead the team as captain in the upcoming season.
Earlier, Shaheen Shah Afridi had said that he is looking forward to captaining Lahore Qalandars in the PSL if given the opportunity.

He had lauded the management of Lahore Qalandars during a virtual press conference, hailing it as "exceptionally good."
"It's thrilling to perform for the Lahore Qalandars, I've been playing with them for a number of years," he had said.

LAHORE: The Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises have asked the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for additional platinum category players ahead of the seventh season.

The franchises are unhappy with the quality of players participating in the league and are concerned that this could affect the “image of the tournament".

Responding to the franchises’ request, the PCB has said that they would “try their best” to attract top-quality players for the replacement draft, is expected to take place through a virtual session on January 7.

The PCB has also discussed the possibility of including South Africa’s cricketers in PSL7, bearing in mind the fact that the Mzansi Super League has been cancelled due to Covid-19 fears.

“We have no reservations about including South Africa’s players because we want the best cricketers to take part in the league. Six additional platinum players would be great for us,” the franchises told the PCB.

In the replacement draft, Karachi Kings will have the first pick, followed by Lahore Qalandars, Islamabad United, Quetta Gladiators, Multan Sultans and Peshawar. This order has been decided through a random draw, according to the PCB.

According to sources, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has planned to enlist the services of Pakistan Army doctors for each team participating in the next Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 7 as part of its anti-COVID-19 measures.

Sources further said that each PSL side will have one doctor from the Pakistan Army Medical Corps. Similarly, during the ICC T20 World Cup, each PSL team’s players and officials will be subjected to daily quick antigen tests at the hotel.

During the major event, strict procedures will be in place to restrict the spread of COVID-19, as per sources. They added added that PCR tests will not be available every day.

Moreover, the Army’s doctors will be in charge of conducting health tests and taking the athletes’ temperatures. They were also hired during the PSL-6, according to the sources.

Additionally, domestic and foreign players cannot be confined for the entire week leading up to the league, as per the COVID-19 protocols issued by the PCB.

KARACHI: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ramiz Raja Tuesday presided over a high-level meeting to review arrangements for the upcoming season 7 of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
The first phase of PSL-7 is scheduled to start from January 27 in Karachi.

High-ranking officials of the Sindh government, district administration, police and the National Stadium were present in the meeting.


Ramiz Raja discusses PSL arrangements with PM

On January 1, PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja had called on Prime Minister Imran Khan in Lahore to discuss arrangements for the upcoming season of the PSL starting January 27.

During the meeting, PM Imran Khan gave his nod to the construction of the state-of-the-art cricket stadium in Islamabad.

According to the details, the prime minister gave in-principle approval for the construction of a cricket stadium in Islamabad and directed the PCB chairman to utilise all the resources to complete its construction as soon as possible.


When approached, Ramiz Raja had said the efforts would be maximized to complete the construction of the stadium by 2025, enabling Pakistan to organise Champions Trophy matches at the newly-constructed venue.

The seventh edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL 7) is scheduled to start this month but the PSL 7 anthem is yet to release. The talk of the town is that renowned singers Ali Zafar and Asim Azhar will sing the official anthem of Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 7, it has been learnt through reliable sources.

The sources further revealed that after huge criticism on Naseebo Laal's PSL 6 anthem, the PSL management has decided to give yet another chance to Ali Zafar with Asim Azhar.

The song of the first three PSL editions was sung by Ali Zafar. Fawad Khan and Young Desi made the anthem for PSL 4. Meanwhile, PSL 5 anthem included several singers, including Ali Azmat, Haroon, Arif Lohar, and Asim Azhar. Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq and pacer Wahab Riaz have said that they are happy over Lahore Qalandars' picking Shaheen Shah Afridi as their skipper.

The star fast bowler was named captain of the Lahore Qalandars for the seventh edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) last month, after which, he vowed to do the best for his team.

Inzamam, speaking to journalists alongside Riaz, said the decision to appoint the 21-year-old as the captain was a "good one", as the responsibility will give him confidence and boost his morale.

"It is important to give such responsibilities to youngsters, as they will be prepared when they are given such a task at the national level," the former chief selector said.

The batting great, who was recently appointed as Peshwar Zalmi's honorary president, said just like Qalandars appointed Shaheen as their captain, first-class cricket teams should do the same — "it will be good for Pakistan cricket".

"Babar Azam is the captain in all three formats, he has excelled at carrying out his responsibili
ties; the longer he serves as skipper, the more he will learn. His individual performance is also up to the mark."


Babar has groomed himself: Riaz

Riaz, for one, believes that Qalandars' decision to name Shaheen as skipper will provide him with exposure, and that different challenges will become easier for the lanky pacer in the future.

The left-arm pacer said Babar has groomed himself, and now, he has also decided to become the captain of a franchise — Karachi Kings — which will prove to be beneficial for him.

PSL 2022: Is Shoaib Malik singing Peshawar Zalmi's anthem?

Pakistan Super League (PSL) is just around the corner and teams are getting ready for the seventh edition of the country's biggest cricket tournament.

The official anthem for the T20 tournament has not been released and neither do we know who will be singing it, but Peshawar Zalmi's Shoaib Malik has shared a photo, in which it seems that he will be singing for his franchise.


"The Zalmi rapper," Malik wrote, sharing a photo on Instagram, where he can be seen wearing accessories on his hands and fancy sunglasses like rappers.

Zalmi's anthem "Kingdom" for PSL 6 was sung by Abdullah Siddiqui and it also featured Turkish actress Esra Bilgic, Mahira Khan, Hania Aamir, and Ali Rehman.

Meanwhile, PSL had released "Groove Mera", which featured Naseebo Lal, Aima Baig, and Young Stunners. The Pakistan Cricket Board had said that the song refered to the "swing and feel of the movements of cricketers".

PSL 7: Franchises boost teams with supplementary and replacement draft

The six HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises on Saturday picked additional players and submitted partial replacements for unavailable players in a supplementary and replacement draft, said a statement from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The statement said the draft was held through a virtual session and the order of selection was decided through random draw.


Karachi Kings had the first pick for the supplementary draft and chose Sahibzada Farhan, winner of the PCB Domestic Cricketer of the Year Award 2021.

Lahore Qalandar who had the second pick chose Mohammad Imran Randhawa.

"In the next four picks; Islamabad United added pacer Musa Khan, who played for them in the 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons; Quetta Gladiators reserved their pick; Multan Sultans picked England pacer David Willey, and Peshawar Zalmi picked Mohammad Umar.

"The second round followed [a] reverse order in which Peshawar Zalmi, the winners of the second edition of HBL PSL, going first, reserved their pick. Defending champions Multan Sultans picked Rizwan Hussain, 2019 edition’s Quetta Gladiators picked Ghulam Mudassar, two-time champions Islamabad United plucked Zahir Khan, Lahore Qalandars further boosted their pace department with the addition of Akif Javed and Karachi Kings bagged Jordan Thompson," the PCB said.

According to the statement, each franchise was allowed to pick a maximum of one foreign cricketer out of the two supplementary picks.

Moving on to the replacement draft, the defending champions replaced Odean Smith with wicketkeeper-batter Johnson Charles and Rovman Powell with Dominic Drakes.

The Gladiators opted to change Naveen-ul-Haq with Luke Wood, James Vince with Will Smeed, Jason Roy with Shimron Hetmyer, and Afghanistan’s Noor Ahmed with Ali Imran.

Karachi Kings proceeded to replace Pakistan U19 captain Qasim Akram with left-arm spinner Mohammad Taha Khan since the former is busy in West Indies playing in the ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cup. The statement added the team also reserved its pick for Tom Abell.

Meanwhile, Islamabad United replaced Zeeshan Zameer with Mohammad Huraira.

"The unavailability of English wicketkeeper-batter Phil Salt for a few initial matches saw Ben Dunk reuniting with Lahore Qalandars.

"Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators reserved their one supplementary pick each, while five franchises, except Quetta Gladiators, reserved their picks in the replacement round," the statement said

The PSL has signed a two-year broadcast deal worth USD 24 million with local sports channels A Sports and PTV Sports.

The deal, according to the PCB, represents a 50% increase on the last cycle. That deal was worth USD 36 million over three years, but including international rights as well. This time round, the international broadcast rights for the league were sold separately; the 50% increase represents that difference as well as a weakening rupee against the dollar.

In any case, the PCB will be understandably pleased with the result, not least because three local channels were among the leading bids, an upturn in what had for some time looked like a flagging local broadcast scene: the winners of the bid - a consortium of ARY which owns A Sports and the state-owned PTV - and the second-highest bidders, Geo Sports.

The deal also comes only a couple of months after the PCB and PSL franchises finally agreed on a new financial model. That resolution had been a long time coming and indeed, at various moments, did not look like it would be reached at all, representing an existential threat to the league itself.

Incidentally, the owners of A Sports - the ARY group - also own Karachi Kings, one of the six PSL franchises.

The deal covers the 2022 and 2023 seasons, respectively the seventh and eighth editions of the league.

"The extraordinary interest and increase in the TV broadcast rights of the HBL Pakistan Super League underscores how popular the tournament has become despite being launched just six years ago," PCB's acting CEO Salman Naseer said.

"I want to thank the consortium of ARY and PTV for valuing the biggest product of Pakistan cricket, which has become a source of inspiration for thousands of young children to take up the sport."

Internationally, the PSL has a three-season deal with broadcasters in the UK, North America, New Zealand, South Africa and the Caribbean.

PSL 2022 tickets go up for sale online:

Tickets for the Karachi and Lahore legs of the seventh edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) are up for sale on cricket.bookme.pk, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said in a statement on Tuesday.

The first leg of 15 matches will be played in Karachi from Jan 27 to Feb 7, while the remaining 19 matches will be held in Lahore from Feb 10-27.

The PCB, however, has laid some rules for spectators in a bid to prevent spread of the Covid-19.
All ticket-holders will also have to display their immunisation certificates and CNIC at the time of entering the venues, the cricket board said.


Ticket prices

According to the PCB, the ticket prices for the tournament opener between Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans on Jan 27 at the National Stadium have been fixed at Rs2,500 for VIP enclosure, Rs2,000 for premium enclosure, Rs1,500 for first-class enclosure and Rs500 for general enclosure.

While for the Feb 27 final at the Gaddafi Stadium, ticket prices have been set at Rs4,000 for VIP enclosure, Rs3,000 for premium enclosure, Rs2,500 for first-class enclosure and Rs1,500 for general enclosure. Ticket prices for the three play-off matches scheduled from Feb 23 to 25 have been locked at Rs3,000 for VIP enclosure, Rs2,500 for premium enclosure, Rs2,000 for first-class enclosure and Rs1,000 for general enclosure.

Meanwhile, the ticket prices for league matches taking place between Monday and Thursday have been set at Rs2,000 for VIP enclosure, Rs1,750 for premium enclosure, Rs1,250 for first-class enclosure and Rs250 for general enclosure.

Ticket prices for single-headers from Friday to Sunday are Rs2,500 for VIP enclosure, Rs2,000 for premium enclosure, Rs1,500 for first-class enclosure and Rs500 for general enclosure.

For the six double-headers (three each in Karachi and Lahore), the PCB has fixed ticket prices at Rs3,000 for VIP enclosure, Rs2,500 for premium enclosure, Rs2,000 for first-class enclosure and Rs1,000 for general enclosure.

The PCB added that the fans can also purchase tickets for Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis enclosures at the Gaddafi Stadium, which have been reserved as "Hospitality Stands". Price for these enclosures range from Rs4,000 to Rs7,000, depending on the day and match, it added.
