The tenth edition of the Pakistan Super League, officially referred to as PSL X, is all set to kickstart on Friday, when defending champions Islamabad United take on Lahore Qalandars at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, the cricket board said in a statement.

A glittering opening ceremony before the start of the play will mark the beginning of this historic edition. HBL PSL X is slated to run from 11 April to 18 May, with night matches starting at 8 pm PKT.

The 34-match tournament comprises three double-headers scheduled on 12 April, 1 and 10 May, while the remaining fixtures will be single headers taking place across Karachi, Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi. The three afternoon games will begin at 4 pm PKT.

The six teams will also be locking horns to take away the USD 500,000 prize money set for the winners, while the runners-up team will be awarded USD 200,000. The HBL PSL X Draft, which took place on 13 January, allowed the six franchises to refurbish their squads ahead of the historic edition.

The newly renovated Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore is set to play host to 13 HBL PSL X matches including Qualifier, Eliminator and the 18 May final. The Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium will host 11 matches, while Multan Cricket Stadium and National Bank Stadium will witness five HBL PSL X matches each this season.

Babar Azam, the leading run-scorer in the HBL PSL with 3,504 runs to his name, will be leading the HBL PSL 2017 winners Peshawar Zalmi. Australia’s David Warner becomes the fourth overseas player to lead the 2020 champions Karachi Kings after Ravi Bopara, Kumar Sangakkara and Eoin Morgan.

Mohammad Rizwan, who led Multan Sultans to glory in the 2021 edition in Abu Dhabi, will continue to reign as the Sultans’ skipper, having done so 48 times in the previous four HBL PSL editions. Quetta’s Saud Shakeel will take the leadership duties of the Gladiators from Rilee Rossouw.

Shadab Khan, who has led Islamabad United in 55 HBL PSL matches so far, has been entrusted with leadership duties for HBL PSL X as well, while Shaheen Shah Afridi, the only captain to have won consecutive HBL PSL titles, will be in charge of the Lahore Qalandars.

In HBL PSL 2024, Islamabad United emerged as winners, bagging the title for the third time, while Multan Sultans ended up as runners-up for the third consecutive time

As the Pakistan Super League enters its tenth edition, here's a look at some of the key numbers and records from the previous nine seasons.

Transition of dominance from bowlers to batters

The PSL was once known as a bowler-dominant league, with the UAE hosting most of the games. But the batters have taken the lead ever since the tournament moved completely to Pakistan. Across 124 matches held in the UAE, the average batting strike rate was 123.36. That has gone up to 138.79 in the 158 games hosted by Pakistan.

The balls per wicket are more or less the same - 18.21 in the UAE, and 18.39 in Pakistan - but the average has gone up by three runs, from 22.25 to 25.52. The boundary frequency has also increased, from 6.40 balls per boundary to 5.35, and the balls-per-six ratio has improved from 20.23 to 17.63.

Rawalpindi's run feasts

The Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium has the best run rate among all the venues that have hosted PSL games. The run rate here is 9.71 across 25 matches, one run higher than the second-placed National Stadium in Karachi.

Across 18 matches in the last two seasons, Rawalpindi saw 16 totals of 200 or more. In seven matches, both teams breached 200. Four of the top five match aggregates in the PSL, including the top three, have come in Rawalpindi.

Finishing in top four every year

Peshawar Zalmi are the only team in the PSL to have made it to the knockouts, or playoffs, in all nine editions. Although they have won the title only once (in 2017), they have qualified for the final four times and finished as runners-up three times (2018, 2019 and 2021).

Multan Sultans have also reached the final in four different seasons - 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. Islamabad United, the most successful team in the league with three titles, has failed to make the playoffs only once, in 2020.

Multan Sultans' fortress

Sultans have an impressive record when playing at their home ground, the Multan Cricket Stadium. They have a win-loss ratio of 5.5 at this venue, the best among all teams at any venue in the PSL. Sultans have won 11 of the 13 matches they played here, losing only two - by margins of one run and five runs.

Five of their 11 wins came by a margin of 30-plus runs, including four by 50 or more. Twice, they won chasing with five or more overs to spare. In those 13 matches in Multan, their batters averaged 39.36 and scored at 9.07 runs per over. Their opponents averaged 18.35 at a scoring rate of 7.89.

Ronchi, the boundary hitter

Luke Ronchi, who last played the PSL in 2020, has hit a boundary every 3.7 balls - the best among those with 500-plus runs in the PSL. Among the active players, Mohammad Haris has the best ratio: 3.92 balls per boundary.

Tim David is at the top when it comes to six hitting, with a ratio of 7.84 balls per six. He has hit 42 sixes off 337 balls across 22 matches. Asif Ali is the best among those who will be playing this year, with 8.53 balls per six. Only Fakhar Zaman (104) has hit more sixes in the PSL than Asif's 90.

Can Gladiators get their mojo back?

Quetta Gladiators finished in the top four in each of the first four editions, and played the final the first three times - in 2016, 2017 and 2019. Till 2019, when they won their maiden title, Gladiators had the best win-loss ratio among all teams - 1.625; they won 26 matches, and lost 16. But since then, they have won 18 and lost 31, and their win-loss ratio of 0.580 is the worst among six teams.

Till 2019, Gladiators' scoring rate of 7.98 and economy rate of 7.66 was the best in the league. Since then, they are worst on both metrics, with a run rate of 8.31 and an economy rate of 9.23. In the last five seasons, they have made the playoffs only once, in 2024.

Shaheen's first-over strikes

Shaheen Shah Afridi is one of only three bowlers to take 100-plus wickets in the PSL. But when it comes to striking in the first over, he is a clear leader. He has struck 19 times in the first over of the innings, seven times more than the second-best Hasan Ali.

Three hundreds in seven innings

Sultans' Usman Khan came under limelight when, in PSL 2023, he smashed a 36-ball century, the fastest in the league's history. He returned in 2024 with back-to-back unbeaten tons, becoming the first player to score hundreds in successive innings in the PSL. Usman's three centuries came in a span of seven innings; no one else has even two in seven innings.

Usman Khan celebrates his hundred, Islamabad United vs Multan Sultans, PSL, Rawalpindi, March 10, 2024

Usman Khan has three hundreds in just 17 innings•PCB/PSL

Usman is currently tied with Kamran Akmal for the most PSL tons. Usman has played only 17 games while Kamran played 74.

An unlikely record-holder

Predominantly a batter, Ravi Bopara has only one five-for in his 21-year T20 career. And only once did he take six wickets in an innings in his 1000-plus match professional career.

That came in the PSL when Bopara took 6 for 16 against Lahore Qalandars in the inaugural 2016 season. Three others have taken six-fors in the PSL since then, but none have managed to better Bopara's figures.

Team hundred in the powerplay on cards?

No team in the PSL has scored 100 runs inside the powerplay. The highest powerplay total is 97 for 0 by Islamabad against Gladiators in 2021. They reached the 100-run mark in 6.2 overs, the fastest team hundred in the PSL. With the increasing scoring rates in the past couple of years, PSL 2025 could see the 100-run barrier breached in the powerplay for the first time.

HBL PSL 2025: Hungry Karachi, Multan seek redemption after past woes

The HBL Pakistan Super League’s tenth edition will arrive here at the National Bank Stadium on Saturday with a contest between two hungry sides in Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans – the former desperate for a place in the playoffs, the latter looking to finally get their hands on the trophy.

The Kings, the home team, have not made it to the top four of a PSL table in the last three seasons, while the Sultans have ended as runners-up in all those.

For Multan, who have an established core of players and a stable team management setup, the latest PSL edition will be about taking yet another shot at the title. Karachi, meanwhile, will go into a tournament as a transformed side.

The transformation was symbolised by the signing of former Australian opener David Warner in the player draft process, but it was not all about the flamboyant southpaw, who is set to feature in the PSL for the first time.

Karachi Kings have in their ranks the likes of Bangladesh’s Litton Das and in-form New Zealand Twenty20 specialist Tim Seifert, along with former Kiwis skipper Kane Williamson — though he will be available for only three matches.

They are ripe with all-round options in Aamer Jamal’s pace and the spin prowess of Pakistan’s Khushdil Shah and Afghanistan veteran Mohammad Nabi.

One of the best bowlers across the last few seasons of the PSL, Abbas Afridi, will also be a Karachi Kings player this season, with fellow pacers Hasan Ali and Mir Hamza bringing in much-needed experience.

Warner, named Karachi’s captain already, though, doesn’t want to look too far ahead. For the 38-year-old, a good start is all that matters.

“Our immediate focus is to win the opening game,” he told reporters on the eve of the Multan clash. “The team is shaping up well, and we’ve had productive training sessions despite the warm weather.”

Warner said the plethora of options at Karachi’s disposal will allow the team to make playing XI selections based on match-ups and the conditions at play.

On Friday, he found the National Bank Stadium surface full of grass, reminding him of Australia.

“The surface here gives us something familiar to work with,” he said. ““We’ll continue to adjust our playing XI based on match conditions and pitch behavior.

“The vibe within the group is fantastic,” said Warner. “We want to enjoy the tournament while staying focused on our goals.”

Multan, since their triumphant 2021 title-winning campaign in Abu Dhabi against Peshawar Zalmi, have come heartbreakingly close, finishing as runners-up in three consecutive finals — twice to Lahore Qalandars (2022 and 2023) and once to Islamabad United (2024).

As one of the most consistent and successful franchises in the league, the Sultans are now focused on overcoming the final hurdle: lifting the PSL trophy and ending the four-year title drought.

The Mohammad Rizwan-led team hold a clear advantage over Karachi Kings, having won six of their last seven encounters and holding a 7-5 overall record in 15 head-to-head PSL matches. “We’ve reached four consecutive finals this decade but crossed the line only once, in 2021,” Rizwan said. “That remains our ultimate goal and we’re confident and determined to achieve it through consistent and strong performances.”

Wary of Karachi’s batting strength, Rizwan said he was confident Multan would pose a challenge.

“The Karachi Kings match is going to be tough,” he said. “They have a strong batting lineup, but we’ve planned to exploit their weaknesses with our bowling attack.

“For Karachi, we’ll focus on early wickets to put their middle order under pressure.”

Karachi Kings' James Vince plays a shot during their PSL 10 match against Multan Sultans at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi on April 12, 2025.

Karachi Kings have chased down a massive 235-run target against Multan Sultans courtesy of James Vince and Khushdil Shah who smashed ton and fifty, respectively, in the third match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 10 being played at the National Bank Stadium, Karachi.

Chasing a daunting 235-run target, the home side amassed the total for the loss of four wickets and as many balls to spare.

Leading the way for the Kings was Vince, who top-scored in the run chase with a quickfire 101 off just 43 deliveries with the help of 14 fours and four sixes.

He was also involved in a match-winning 142-run partnership with Khushdil Shah, who made a blistering 60 off 38 deliveries, laced with five fours and four sixes.

The duo, however, perished in the span of just deliveries, bringing the Kings’ total down to 222/6 in 18.3 overs.

But a sensible partnership for the seventh wicket between Muhammad Irfan Khan and Abbas Afridi sailed the Kings over the line on the second delivery of the final over.

Earlier, opening batter Tim Seifert gave the home side a desired start with a brisk 32-run cameo from just 16 deliveries, smashing two fours and three sixes.

For the Sultans, Akif Javed took three wickets, while Michael Bracewell and Usama Mir made one scalp apiece.

Put into bat first, the visitors registered 234/3 in their allotted 20 overs, courtesy of Rizwan’s masterful knock.

The visitors got off to a decent start to their innings as their opening pair yielded a brisk 55 runs in five overs.

Rizwan was the core aggressor of the opening stand, while Shai Hope (eight) focused on strike rotation until falling victim to Hasan Ali on the first delivery of the sixth over.

The skipper then shared a brief 27-run partnership for the second wicket with Usman Khan, who could score 19 off 15 deliveries.

Rizwan was then joined by Kamran Ghulam and together they strengthened Sultans’ command by putting together 63 runs amid their third-wicket partnership, which spanned six overs.

Ghulam fell victim to Abbas Afridi in the 15th over after scoring a swift 36 off 19 deliveries, laced with five fours and a six.

The skipper then found adequate support from the other end in the form of Michael Bracewell and the duo further bolstered Sultans’ total by putting together an unbeaten 89-run partnership in just 32 deliveries.

Rizwan remained the top-scorer with an unbeaten 105 off 63 deliveries, studded with nine fours and five sixes, while Bracewell made 44 not out from 17 deliveries, hitting five fours and three sixes.

For Kings, only Hasan Ali, Abbas Afridi and Khushdil Shah could pick up a wicket apiece.

Sam Billings' explosive 19-ball half-century and a composed fifty from Fakhar Zaman powered Lahore Qalandars to a commanding total of 219/6 against Quetta Gladiators in the fourth match of the tenth edition of the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) on Sunday.

After being put in to bat in Rawalpindi cricket stadium, Lahore Qalandars had a shaky start as Mohammad Naeem was clean bowled by Abrar Ahmed in the third over, putting the side under early pressure.

However, opener Fakhar Zaman and Abdullah Shafique steadied the innings with a brisk 56-run partnership, taking the score to 73. Shafique looked well set for his second consecutive half-century of the tournament, but his innings was cut short at 37 when he was caught and bowled by Akeal Hosein.

Fakhar remained composed, reaching his half-century in just 30 balls. He then built another solid stand, adding 80 runs with New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell, who contributed a quick-fire 37 off 23 deliveries.

At 153/2 in 14.4 overs, Qalandars appeared to be cruising, but the momentum shifted rapidly as they lost both Mitchell and Zaman in the span of three deliveries.

Mitchell was stumped off Abrar Ahmed after stepping down the track, while Zaman, who played a composed knock of 67 off 37 balls, was caught in the deep while attempting to clear the ropes against Usman Tariq.

The collapse continued as Sikandar Raza was dismissed for just 6, leaving Qalandars in trouble.

But Sam Billings had other plans. The Englishman launched a fierce counterattack, hammering a 19-ball half-century that included four sixes and four boundaries. His late onslaught powered Lahore to a formidable total of 219/6.
