10:23pm: Well, it was on the cards. With the rain pouring down unabated and less than an hour left in the cut-off time, the match has been called off. Both teams get one point. Quetta and Lahore are both locked at 9 points, with Lahore in second spot, one step above Quetta by virtue of their better net run rate

10:08pm: Very calm and serene vibe at the stadium; some fans still waiting earnestly in hopes of more action. A light drizzle lingers in the air and we still have a little over an hour left for a five-over contest but for that to happen, the rain needs to stop completely so mop-up operations can begin

A blistering knock from 20-year-old Maaz Sadaqat, combined with another composed half-century from Babar Azam, powered Peshawar Zalmi to a comprehensive win over Islamabad United in their HBL Pakistan Super League clash on Friday in Lahore.

Zalmi’s chase got off to a shaky start as they lost both openers, Mitchell Owen and Saim Ayub, within the first two overs. Owen blasted a quick 6 off just two balls before falling to Kyle Mayers, while Ayub managed just one run before being cleaned up by Ben Dwarshuis.

Captain Babar Azam and wicketkeeper Mohammad Haris attempted to steady the innings, adding 38 runs. But Haris (13 off 12) perished just before the end of the powerplay, caught by Naseem Shah off Jhye Richardson, leaving Zalmi in a spot of bother.

Enter Maaz Sadaqat. The young left-hander, touted as a rising star, joined his captain at the crease and immediately shifted the momentum with fearless strokeplay. His 55 off just 33 balls, laced with 4 fours and 3 towering sixes, not only revived the innings but put Zalmi firmly in control.

Babar Azam anchored the chase with a composed 53 Not Out off 49 balls, ensuring stability at one end while Maaz went on the attack at the other. Their partnership took the game away from the opposition as Zalmi reached 144/4 in just 16.4 overs.

The defeat means United, still at the top of the table, have now suffered their second loss of the tournament, potentially hurting their chances of finishing first.

Earlier, after winning the toss and opting to bat first, Islamabad United got off to a flying start but failed to capitalise, ultimately managing only 143/9.

United looked well poised in the powerplay, thanks to a composed innings by Sahibzada Farhan, who top-scored with 36 off 35 balls, including four boundaries and a six. Alongside Kyle Mayers (18 off 18), the pair provided early momentum before Zalmi's bowlers clawed back with timely breakthroughs.

The collapse began with Mayers’ dismissal, caught by Alzarri Joseph off Mohammad Ali, who proved to be the standout bowler with figures of 3 for 19. Ali also removed Colin Munro (11) and Saad Masood (1), dismantling the middle order and stalling United’s scoring rate.

Skipper Shadab Khan attempted to counter-attack with a brisk 15 off 8, but his cameo ended when he holed out to Maaz Sadaqat off Joseph. The wickets kept tumbling, with Azam Khan (8), Salman Agha (4), and Imad Wasim (10) all falling cheaply, the latter run out by a sharp piece of fielding from Babar Azam.

The only late resistance came from Ben Dwarshuis, who smashed an unbeaten 33 off 17 balls, including three fours and two sixes, giving Islamabad something to bowl at on a surface offering some grip and variable bounce.

Islamabad’s innings closed at 143/9 in 20 overs, as Zalmi’s bowling attack dominated throughout. Led by a superb spell from Mohammad Ali, the unit dismantled the batting lineup with strong support from Ahmed Daniyal, Saim Ayub, Luke Wood, Alzarri Joseph, and Hussain Talat, each claiming a wicket to keep the pressure on.

Islamabad United XI:
Shadab Khan (Captain), Kyle Mayers, Sahibzada Farhan, Colin Munro, Salman Ali Agha, Azam Khan (wk), Imad Wasim, Saad Masood, Ben Dwarshuis, Naseem Shah, Riley Meredith.

Peshawar Zalmi XI:
Babar Azam (Captain), Mitch Owen, Saim Ayub, Mohammad Haris (wk), Hussain Talat, Max Bryant, Maaz Sadaqat, Luke Wood, Alzari Joseph, Ahmed Daniyal, Mohammad Ali.

PSL 10: Quetta Gladiators beat Islamabad United after last-over drama

Quetta Gladiators edged past Islamabad United by two wickets in a last-over thriller at the Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday, with young batter Hasan Nawaz emerging as the match-winner in a high-pressure finish.

Chasing 158, Quetta were cornered, needing 15 runs from the final over. But Islamabad imploded under pressure, as Hasan was given three lives in the first four balls, each time escaping a regulation catch.

He made the most of it, finishing the match with a six, lifting Quetta across the line with one ball to spare. He remained unbeaten on a match-winning 64 off 41 balls, laced with four sixes and two boundaries.

Earlier, Islamabad United posted 157 for 9, a total that looked competitive on a slightly sluggish surface. Mohammad Nawaz provided some momentum down the order with a well-constructed 49 off 34 balls, hammering five sixes.

Sahibzada Farhan gave them a brisk start, scoring 39 off 24, but Faheem Ashraf turned the tide for Quetta with a devastating three-over spell, picking up 4 wickets for 25 runs.

The Gladiators’ chase began cautiously, with captain Saud Shakeel falling cheaply. Finn Allen and Rilee Rossouw provided short-lived stability before Islamabad clawed back into the game with regular breakthroughs.

Mark Chapman, Haseebullah Khan, and Faheem Ashraf all fell in quick succession, and when Kyle Jamieson and Mohammad Wasim followed, Quetta were 7 down and still needing a tricky 28 off the last three overs.

But Hasan Nawaz remained the constant through the middle and death overs, playing with a mix of calm and aggression. His ability to rotate strike and pounce on poor deliveries proved crucial.

Mohammad Wasim Jr. also chipped in with a valuable 16 off 11 balls before falling to Naseem Shah in the penultimate over.

Islamabad’s undoing, however, was their fielding. They shelled five straightforward catches across the innings, three of them in the final over alone, handing Hasan Nawaz the lifeline he needed to finish the game.

The pressure of the moment seemed to overwhelm them, and what could have been a tense win turned into a gut-wrenching loss.

Naseem Shah and Salman Irshad picked up two wickets each, but Islamabad’s bowlers were let down repeatedly by their fielders, erasing the hard work done earlier in the match. Jason Holder and Mohammad Nawaz bowled with discipline, but they too saw chances go begging.

With this victory, Quetta Gladiators continue their strong run in PSL 10, climbing the points table with 11 points.

Babar Azam steered Peshawar Zalmi's chase with an unbeaten half-century • PCB

Peshawar Zalmi 147 for 4 (Sadaqat 55, Babar 53*, Dwarshuis 1-23) beat Islamabad United 143 for 9 (Farhan 36, Dwarshuis 33*, Mohammad Ali 3-26) by six wickets

Peshawar Zalmi put together one of the best bowling performances of PSL 2025 to restrict the usually free-flowing Islamabad United to 143 before cantering to a six-wicket victory. Mohammad Ali's 3 for 26 was the pick, but each of the four frontline bowlers conceded only between 26 and 29 in their allotted overs and picked up wickets to set up a straightforward chase.

Zalmi wobbled at the start of the chase, though, losing three quick wickets, before a 102-run stand between Maaz Sadaqat and Babar Azam, both of whom scored half-centuries, saw Zalmi canter to a win that kept their playoffs hopes alive and well.

Things looked much less certain after the first few overs of the second innings. Mitchell Owen, promoted to open the batting, slapped the first ball for six before falling the next delivery to Kyle Mayers. Ben Dwarshuis, meanwhile, drew the off-colour Saim Ayub into chopping on cheaply and just before the end of the powerplay, Mohammad Haris misread a slower delivery. Zalmi were suddenly 38 for 3 with Babar looking scratchy and the three most established power-hitters back in the pavilion.

But the bowlers had left them a relatively straightforward task, and the asking rate was still below eight. Sadaqat broke the shackles with a pair of elegant boundaries, getting off to a quick start that allowed Babar to play at his own, more sedate, pace. In under-par chases, Babar's reliability makes him a vital asset, and as the gas began to wheeze out of United's attack, the chase began to look easy.

Peshawar Zalmi cruise past Multan Sultans with 7-wicket win

Peshawar Zalmi reached the target in just 13 overs, finishing at 110 for 3

Peshawar Zalmi delivered a dominant all-round performance to defeat Multan Sultans by 7 wickets in their HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 clash on Monday, chasing down a modest 109-run target in just 13 overs.

Multan Sultans, who won the toss and opted to bat first, suffered a dramatic collapse and were bowled out for 108 in 19.1 overs. Despite early contributions from Mohammad Rizwan (17 off 14) and Tayyab Tahir (22 off 18), the batting order faltered with no substantial partnerships.

Shai Hope top-scored with 23, but the middle and lower order offered little resistance. Zalmi’s bowlers capitalised effectively, with Ahmed Daniyal taking 3 for 17 and Maaz Sadaqat claiming 2 for 12. Luke Wood also chipped in with 2 wickets, dismantling any hopes of a Multan recovery.

In response, Zalmi opener Saim Ayub set the tone with a commanding 49 off 33 balls, smashing four boundaries and three sixes. Despite the early loss of Mitchell Owen and a brief wobble with the dismissal of captain Babar Azam (8 off 13), Max Bryant took control with an unbeaten 38 from just 20 deliveries, sealing the chase with ease.

Zalmi reached the target in just 13 overs, finishing at 110 for 3, with Mohammad Haris unbeaten on 7 at the other end.

Saim Ayub’s fluent 49 and a disciplined bowling display powered Peshawar Zalmi to a commanding seven-wicket victory over Multan Sultans in the 25th match of Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 10 at Multan Cricket Stadium on Monday.

Chasing a modest target of 109, Zalmi reached the finish line in just 13 overs, driven by Ayub’s 33-ball 49, which included four boundaries and three sixes.

Max Bryant added an unbeaten 38 off 20 balls, sealing the match with a flourish, while skipper Babar Azam managed 8 runs before being dismissed by Shahid Aziz.

PSL 10: Irfan Niazi stars in Karachi’s thrilling win over Lahore

Earlier, Multan Sultans were bundled out for just 108 in 19.1 overs after opting to bat first. Shai Hope (23), Tayyab Tahir (22), and Mohammad Rizwan (17) were the only batters to show brief resistance. The rest of the lineup crumbled against Zalmi’s well-orchestrated bowling attack.

Ahmed Daniyal led the bowling charge with figures of 3 for 17, while Maaz Sadaqat took 2 for 12. Ali Raza, Luke Wood, Saim Ayub, and Alzarri Joseph chipped in with a wicket each.

Zalmi’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure, with Ali Raza conceding just 15 runs in his four overs. In contrast, Multan’s bowling lacked discipline, with Ubaid Shah leaking 43 runs in his three overs.

The win boosts Zalmi’s momentum heading into the final stretch of the league stage.
