Musharraf rejects nuke concerns as Pakistan tests missile: army

President Pervez Musharraf accused Pakistan's enemies of spreading fears about the country's atomic weapons, as the military test-fired a nuclear-capable missile, the army said.

Musharraf's comments came amid mounting concern in the West about whether the politically unstable South Asian nation's estimated 50 warheads are safe from Al-Qaeda and Taliban militants.

"We have taken note of various imaginary scenarios being propounded by those who do not wish Pakistan well. Such elements have never reconciled to a nuclear Pakistan," an army statement quoted Musharraf as saying.

Musharraf said Pakistan was capable of thwarting all threats to its sovereignty and nuclear capability, and urged "such elements" to be cautious, according to the statement.

He made the comments after witnessing the launch of the intermediate-range Ghari (Hatf V) missile.

The missile, which has a range of 1,300 kilometers (807 miles), was launched at the end of annual field training exercises.

Army chief Ashfaq Kiyani, who replaced Musharraf as head of the military in November, senior military officers and scientists also witnessed the test, the statement said.

Kiyani made similar comments at the launch of another missile a week ago when he dismissed "unrealistic" fears that Pakistan's nuclear warheads could fall into the wrong hands.

Musharraf congratulated the team behind the latest launch on "achieving high standards of training and excellent results."

"The nation has developed a strong nuclear deterrence capability and expects that officers and men entrusted with the task of deterring aggression would continue to train hard and maintain professional excellence," he said.

Pakistan and its regional rival India make frequent missile test launches. The two countries have fought three wars since 1947 and carried out tit-for-tat nuclear test detonations in 1998.

I was hoping for a linger range missile some thing between 2500km and 4000 km as we were promised.

Any way can some body tell me that whats the enhancements in this missile

.
The military has been working on modifying the missile to allow launches from mobile platforms.

The range has been reduced hasn't it? I was under the assumption that the original Ghauri was 1500 km - and the just tested one is stated to have a 1300 km range. I imagine the reduction in range is due to making the missile capable of being fired from a mobile launcher. Possible conversion to solid fuel?

The payload was probably more than 700kg.

.
Its a compromise essentially.

The only example I can think of are Iraqi modifications to scud missles where payload was reduced but range increased.

If the range is lower then the payload will have increased but also accuracy as the flight time to target is lower so the impact of errors will reduce.

Ghauri with Solid fuel .... Nice!

Now all Pakistani Missiles will be efficient and with more agility.

Solid fuel Motor is better than liquid fuel!

.
Nice going by all the persons who involve in these time of projects ... Keep it UP

.
Was it a solid fuel test?

I'm unclear about the word "enhanced".

.
So if the Range is reduced to 1300 and its abilites are much more enhanced what are the chance for the Ghuari can he dogue the Arrow Missile Defence system.

. .
it will be perfect time for PAKISTAN , after holding gen elections, pakistan can go for longer range at least 4000 plus.

it is very important , that pakistan should have some thing which can make pakistan strong and more safe from the biggest power of the world.

.
Hi,

There is not going to be any 4000km missile in the pakistani missile program. Pakistan's missile are accepted as long as they are india centric at this time. Anymore than that and pakistan will be in trouble. Pakistan does not have the backing of its citizens to do something like going for a 4000km missile.
