Within the Pakistani Land...

Normally they are fired from site near Jehlum (Malute probably) and land near the coast of Mekran, Baluchistan.

. . .
Are these live missiles or simply duds? Don't they cause explosions?

He's saying that cus the US are using duds in Afganistan and Iraq- its the reason why the Talibans are still alive and that insurgancy in iraq havent fallen yet :usflag::usflag::usflag:

Pakistan achieves Ghauri launch success
Joseph S Bermudez Jr Analyst - Colorado

Pakistan conducted a successful training launch of its Ghauri (Hatf V) intermediate-range ballistic missile on 1 February.

The test was conducted by the Pakistan Army's Strategic Forces Command, with the launch exercise attended by President Pervez Musharraf, newly appointed Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and numerous senior officers and scientists.

The Ghauri has a range of approximately 1,300 km and is based on North Korean Nodong missile technology obtained during 1993-1994. The Ghauri development programme is overseen by Khan Research Laboratories, which has reportedly produced a number of modifications to the original system.

The test launch was conducted as a routine component of the winter field training exercises conducted by Strategic Forces Command's ballistic missile units. Such exercises are conducted yearly - a Shaheen II (Hatf VI) was launched in February 2007 - and are intended to reinforce routine training and assess operational readiness.

ANALYSIS
While the launch was a relatively routine event, the current domestic and regional climate added to its significance.

First, the launch appeared to have been intended to deflect continuing internal criticism of Musharraf's domestic policies towards external threats, including India. In congratulating the troops and scientists following the successful training launch, Musharraf addressed such threats: "We have taken note of various imaginary scenarios being propounded by those who do not wish Pakistan well. Such elements have never reconciled to a nuclear Pakistan."

Also in the background was the fact that India, Pakistan's longstanding regional rival, continues to achieve considerable success with its numerous strategic missile systems, which it views as a counterweight to both Pakistan's and China's ballistic missiles. On 4 February, in a thinly veiled response to the Ghauri launch, Indian sources announced that its nuclear-capable Agni I (700 km range) and Agni II (1,500-2,000 km range) missiles were operationally deployed with the Strategic Forces Command's 334th and 335th Rocket Regiments. Each regiment possesses eight transporter-erector-launchers and is capable of launching Agni I or Agni II missiles.

Finally, there is the fact that within Pakistan the Ghauri is in direct competition with the Shaheen, overseen by the rival National Development Complex of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission. The Shaheen II (Hatf VI) programme has achieved significant milestones in the past few years; it was thus important for the Ghauri to launch successfully if it was to continue to compete for defence spending.

I'm still confused, what has been upgraded in it?

Development of 3500+ range of missile will give a pakistan a very good level in internation politics.

Very spontenous thinking, isn'nt it?

against anti-pakistan compaigns by US and the West.

I have yet hear anything like that!

Well this "defence by threat of offence" concept regarding Israel and the US/West has already been covered in the media:

Pakistan advice on attack: 'Hit Israel'
Chicago Sun-Times, May 13, 2006 by Kathy Gannon

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- Pakistan's former army chief says Iranian officials came to him for advice on heading off an attack on their nuclear facilities, and he in effect advised them to take a hostage - - Israel.

Retired Gen. Mirza Aslam Beg said he suggested their government "make it clear that if anything happens to Iran, if anyone attacks it -- it doesn't matter who it is or how it is attacked -- that Iran's answer will be to hit Israel; the only target will be Israel."

Since Beg spoke in an interview with the Associated Press, echoes of his thinking have been heard in Iran, although whether they result directly from his advice isn't known.

Mohammad Ebrahim Dehghani, an Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander, was quoted last week as saying that if "America does make any mischief, the first place we target will be Israel." The threat was disavowed the next day by Brig. Gen. Alireza Afshar, deputy to the chief of Iran's military staff.

The missile previously was liquid fuel based but now it has been upgraded to Solid Fuel.

Since long US, Russia and the west stopped using liquid fueled Balastic Missiles since they are difficult to maintain as the liquid fuel has to be prepared prior to firing which restricts a immediate retaliation response to few hours time.

Thanks Proud to be Pakistani. This means that ghauri now along with shaheen can be ready for launch much more quickly then before in case of an attack, and pakistani missiles will have a responce time much shorter as compared to before.:pakistan:

i hope they also develop penetration aids, maybe that's what they mean by "technologically enhanced"

Why do we need to target israel? IF we ever felt a need to target someone in the future that might be US and for that we need ICBM. Why in the hell do we need to target israel. Grow up people.

If Israel is conveyed the message that if Pakistan ever comes under the attack of the US it will come under attack too, then Israeli lobby in Washington will do everything to prevent an attack on Pakistan by the US. Everybody knows that American politicians are incapable of resisting the Israeli lobby. So, Pakistan should bring Israel within its range as an insurance policy. I believe Israel is already within the range of the Pakistani missiles.

It falls under the range of Shaheen 2. It is very true of the Jewish lobby you talk of..............But compared to Israel, Pakistan has great strategic depth in order to sustain its assault whereas Israel finishes where it begins.
