Pakistan should punish Mumtaz Qadri; blasphemy law should stay: Pervez Musharraf

Former Pakistani military dictator Pervez Mushrarraf has said that the killer of Punjab governor Salman Tasser should be punished and not allowed to challenge the writ of the state, but pledged support for the controversial blasphemy law.

"The assassination of Taseer was wrong and his murderer should be punished," Musharraf was quoted by The Express Tribune newspaper as telling a conference of his All Pakistan Muslim League part in London yesterday.

Mumtaz Qadri, the police guard who shot the governor, should not be permitted to challenge the state's writ, Musharraf said.

Qadri, a member of the elite force that guards VIPs, said he had gunned down Taseer for his criticism of Pakistan's controversial blasphemy law.

Taseer earned the ire of religious hardliners last year when he spoke in defence of a Christian woman sentenced to death for allegedly insulting Prophet Mohammed and sought changes in the blasphemy law.

Musharraf said that since Muslims are very emotional about the blasphemy statute, "the controversial law must stay" in Pakistan.

However, the Islamic concepts of 'ijtehad' (making a decision through the independent interpretation of Islamic legal sources) and 'ijma' (consensus) should be used to see what can be done about the miscarriage of justice, he said.

Asked why he had not amended the blasphemy law when he was in power, Musharraf said he had introduced some procedural changes that required complainants to go to the judiciary rather than the police to file complaints.

Musharraf also spoke on other issues.

The economy, he said, was one of the biggest challenges facing Pakistan, which is beset by hyperinflation and bankruptcy.

He alleged that his arch-rival, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif, had connections with the Taliban and that is why he did not openly condemn the militants.

He announced the opening of APML offices in Quetta and Dera Bugti and the nomination of office-bearers.

The party has also set up chapters in the US and Canada, where Musharraf claimed he had received a good response from the Pakistani diaspora.

Musharraf said he intended to travel by train throughout Britain and meet supporters to consolidate his party.

He reiterated his resolve to return to Pakistan before the next general election.

The former military ruler, who stepped down in 2008, has been living in self-exile in Britain for the past two years.

I have a question for the people who said that Taseer should have went to court rather than speaking on a public forum about blasphemy law---
WHY THE HELL, MULLIS GIVE DEATH FATWAS TO THE PEOPLE RATHER THAN GOING TO THE COURT?

Ohhh, they are right. Mullis can give a death fatwa.

WHAT A JOKE!

Pakistan is like a hen who has two owners. So, if the hen tries to turn on one side, the U.S. starts to spank and if the hen tries to move on the other side, Arabi kings start to spank.

Open up your eyes, Saudis do not follow the RIGHT Islam!!!!!!! nor do they preach the right one!!

Mumtaz Qadri is now a celebrity among the MuLlAh circles, he did somethning for them that nobody else could have done with huge result in their favour.

.
why is this reluctance by the so called political leaders of pakistan to codemn the law outright? even the so called moderate leaders too do not have the audacity to confront these mullas. everyone prefers to sit on the fence & hide behind a favourite quote saying people shouldn't be allowed to misuse the law. how do you do it? i haven't heard anyone coming out with an answer so far!!

The question posed to them is very simple. Each and every law is misused so why only single out this one.

Yeah whatever. Right or wrong Islam but Mumtaz Qadri follows the sect that is totally opposite to the sect what Saudi's follow. So stop abusing arabs and proving yourself rasicst or sectarian bigot.

@Topic

Better statement by Mushi.

feeble justification for not to act. By the inaction of sane ones, what has surfaced after the killing of the governer is the fact that extremism propagated by the mullas has made base much deeper & broader within the pakistani society. evidence of which can be seen by the amount of open support this killer had by the lawyers community, by moderate relegious groups & even some part of liberal media has justified & condoned this gruesome act.

I personally think this law should remain, but, with proper implementation by Law ONLY.

No one should take law in their hands, never, how small or big it is.
