ISLAMABAD – Ambassador of Pakistan to Afghanistan Syed Abrar Hussain on Monday said that Pakistan had planned to construct a motorway from Peshawar to Kabul and a feasibility study about the project would soon be commissioned.

Ambassador expressed these views after hoisting National flag on the occasion of National Day at the Pakistan embassy in Kabul. He said that the motorway project will not only improve connectivity between the two neighbours and Central Asian States but would also bring economic prosperity to Afghanistan, said a press release.

He also underscored the need for intensifying bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the areas of trade, economy, culture and defence. He said that Pakistan attached utmost significance to its ties with the brotherly country and would like to see a strong, stable, peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan.

Talking to efforts to enhance trade with Afghanistan, the ambassador said that Pakistan had removed several trade impediments so as to facilitate and encourage bilateral trade. He stated that Pakistan had executed various projects in health, education and infrastructure sectors in Afghanistan which would tremendously benefit the Afghan people.

Pakistan day was celebrated in the Embassy of Pakistan, Kabul, with great enthusiasm and national fervor to commemorate the passage of historical Lahore Resolution on March 23, 1940 which played a vital role in determing the destination of the Muslims of sub-continent. The Pakistan Day ceremony started with national anthem and hoisting of flag by the Ambassador.

Addressing the participants, he highlighted the historical significance of the day and paid tributes to the founding fathers who had rendered immense sacrifices for achieving a separate homeland. He said that the Pakistan's Resolution of 23rd March 1940 laid the foundation stone of an independent country.

He also paid homage, in his address, to the Father of Nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, whose relentless struggle led to the creation of Pakistan on August 14, 1947. The ceremony was attended by members of Pakistani community including educationists, engineers, doctors, senior executives and businessmen.

. . . .
Who will finance it? Anyway distance between Peshawar and Kabul is 300km. Probably they will start building it after 2020 if plans are not changed.

Gwader-Karachi-Multan-Lahore-Islamabad-Peshawar should be connected with motorways by 2018.

.
In case you missed Pakistan's access to Central Asia is long term planning and it will also facilitate the Pak-China E.C.
long term planning is only possible when you have plans to sustain what you are building...Where is the income coming to sustain these mega projects...Building and letting die is a well known approach in Pakistani politics!

Aren't we sustaining the Lahore-Islamabad and Islamabad Peshawar Motorways ? As for finances, NHA gets a hefty budget from federal government and there is always the domestic and foreign investment / BoT option as well

Are we? And adding more is helping.... how?

As for finances, NHA gets a hefty budget from the federal government and often there is always the domestic and foreign investments
You do know half of the govt budget is brought in on loans....which is not interest free...Whose gonna pay for it? Not NS nor any of his family! They dont use what they make...Strange having soo much confidence in something and never using it to prove the confidence level (mostly these people travel in private jets which we the nation pays for the fuel)!

It will be us, our children and grandchidlren and great (god only knows how many due to the loans + interest and more loans to pay the interest and then their interest and so on)

How much have we paid back for those motorways? How much maintenance is happening? How great are the roads? Do the finances add up? Is the best material money can buy (with the budget allocated in mind) being used or cheaper fake material under the same price?

Then flood damage, winter damage, public damage....list goes on...How much budget is allocated?

Actually, our external debt has been falling steadily over the past year ($1.5b+). Meanwhile, our reserves are rising. If our reserves were constant when PPP left, we would possibly have a lesser debt than when PPP left. Our reserves grew by $5.5b+. It was $18b in 2011, but PPP started using this money to fund for fake development and offer subsidy, which devalued our currency vastly.

We can use the reserves to pay off our debt, but that would devalue our currency.

Pakistan's economy isn't black and white. You have to look behind the curtains. And I don't know why anyone has a problem with development when our reserves are rising and our external debt is falling.

Is this before or after adding the new billions we borrowed these few months?

I agree PPP didnt do us much help but I am interested in trying to see how noon league is justifying their doings!

Growing reserves are good but how to sustain a growth is my question!

How does paying off debt devalue our currency? and is it worth keeping debt and accumulating interest?

problem with development
Because this isnt development in its true sense....development is something you can sustain

Pakistan's FOREX reserves are 14 billion.
Bangladesh's FOREX reserves are 23 billion.

Each Pakistani has a debt of 366 USD on his/her head, while its 150 for Bangladesh.

Great News, Connectivity with Central Asia is a MUST. Plus this would also serve to balance a possible Iran Afghanistan central Asia nexus for trade (being backed by India).

.
the thought of afghans having easy access to peshawar frightens me.
lets hope new govt or marshall law happens so this plan gets scrapped.
arent there any other routes to access central asia through extreme north west/north of our country?

.
I think another motorway should ONLY be allowed when PM and his relatives agree to use it! If it is soo great, why arent they using it?

Long term planning is not part of the plan! :coffee:
Actually it's a good idea. Just don't know who will pay for it..... Making the motorways is very smart.
