Pakistan on Wednesday offered Kuwait to buy its indigenously developed al-Khalid main battle tanks to bolster its defence needs, Foreign Minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi said. Addressing a press briefing here following meetings between President Asif Ali Zardari with several world leaders here on the margins of the meeting on interfaith dialogue, organised by the United Nations, the foreign minister said President Zardari in his meeting with the amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah invited his country to the International Defence Exhibition and Seminar- IDEAS-2008.
President Zardari said the two countries have wide ranging ties in political, economic, defence and other areas, and stressed that these need to be further strengthened in the days ahead.

The President invited the amir of Kuwait to visit Pakistan; an offer that he accepted, the foreign minister said. The President also invited a delegation of Kuwaiti defence forces at the Ideas exhibiton in November. The foreign minister said Pakistan offered the al-Khalid tank to Kuwait describing it as an “attractive buy” keeping in view its price and quality. The al-Khalid tank has a combat weight of 46 tons and carries a crew of three. Fitted with a 1200 HP water-cooled diesel engine, and a maximum speed of 70 km it has a 125mm smooth bore main gun, a 7.62mm co-axial machine gun and a 12.7mm remote firing anti-aircraft gun. The power to weight ratio is 26 horsepower per ton, enhancing the tank’s agility.

The President also sought Kuwaiti investment in developing Pakistan’s energy sector, particularly the hydel sector, that has been neglected in the past. The foreign minister said he will soon be visiting Kuwait to apprise the Kuwaiti authorities about the Bhasha dam project.

Foreign minister Qureshi also gave more details about President Asif Ali Zardari’s meeting with President of Philippines Mrs Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in which both the leaders expressed their resolve to assist each other at multilateral forums.

President Zardari sought support of Philippines in getting Pakistan the status of a dialogue partner at ASEAN, while Philippines asked for Pakistan’s support for observer status at the Organisation of Islamic Conference. The two sides also agreed to review the progress on their Joint Economic Commission for which an MoU was inked in July. The two leaders also invited each

other to visit their respective countries. Both accepted the offer. The two sides also agreed to celebrate 60 years of their diplomatic relations in 2009.

President Zadari and President Arroyo also discussed the importance of the interfaith dialogue aimed at bringing peace and prosperity to the world and the need for a united approach to achieve greater world harmony.

The two leaders who are here to attend the high level plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly on the “Culture of Peace” on the initiative of Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz met on the margins of moot to discuss ways the role their

two countries could play to bring global harmony and mutual understanding.

President Zardari apprised the President of Philippines the challenges his country was facing at the hands of extremists and terrorists who were bringing a bad name to the religion and Pakistan. He also informed her of the multi pronged approach that has been adopted to tackle the challenges.

The two leaders also discussed a range of bilateral matters and the need for greater collaboration and interaction to improve their political, diplomatic and economic ties.

President Zardari was of the view that both the countries need to explore new avenues of collaboration and widen the range of cooperation, particularly in trade and commerce. He said the private sectors of the two countries can generate

lot more economic activity with increased joint ventures.

The President of Philippines reciprocated the ideas of President and called for increased interaction between the two countries at all levels.

great news.......!!! but if kuwait wants to buy tanks they would defitly buy from europe or russians!!!
Like Saudia Arabia!!!

I can't see it coming to fruition.

The Kuwaitis already operate the M84 from the former Yugoslavia and they are more likely to continue that relationship by buying the Croatian M95 degmann

Pakistan offers to sell Kuwait Al-Khalid tanks

NEW YORK: Pakistan has offered to sell its indigenously built Al-Khalid battle tanks to Kuwait to bolster the sovereign Arab emirate’s defence, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said on Wednesday.

Addressing a press briefing following meetings between President Asif Ali Zardari and world leaders on the sidelines of a United Nations meeting on interfaith dialogue, the foreign minister said President Zardari had invited Kuwait to attend the International Defence Exhibition and Seminar, IDEAS-2008, in November, at a meeting with its ruler – Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. Zardari said the two countries had a range political, economic and defence ties, but stressed that relations needed to be strengthened further.

Qureshi said the president had also invited the Kuwaiti ruler to visit Pakistan – and the offer was accepted.

The minister said Pakistan offered the Al-Khalid tanks to Kuwait describing them as an “attractive purchase because of their price and quality”. The tank weighs of 46 tonnes and carries three troops. Fitted with a 1,200-horsepower, water-cooled diesel engine and a maximum speed of 70 kilometres per hour, it has a 125-millimetre, smooth bore main gun, a 7.62-millimetre, co-axial machinegun and a 12.7-millimetre, remote-firing anti-aircraft gun. The power-to-weight ratio is 26 horsepower per tonne.

The president also sought Kuwaiti investment in developing Pakistan’s energy sector, particularly for the Bhasha Dam project, Qureshi said, adding that he would soon visit Kuwait to brief the Kuwaiti authorities on the project.

The minister also told the media about Zardari’s meeting with Philippines President Gloria Arroyo, where both leaders vowed to assist each other at multilateral forums. The president sought Philippines’ support in getting Pakistan the status of a dialogue partner at ASEAN, while Philippines asked for Pakistan’s support in getting an observer’s status at the Organisation of the Islamic Conference. app

I wonder if they will buy them, they sure have all the money they need but that is exactly why they might not buy it thinking they rather get the more expensive western deals!

Unfortunately sometimes people do feel that expensive=better

I think if Pakistan market's the products effectively.....lobbying hard to the Kuwaitis (regularly dining),....it would be a cost-effective tank for the Kuwaitis.

Pakistan has a number of 'expertise' in certain equipments...it just needs very good salesperson to make the sale.

I hope they buy them we have to do wat we have to do !!

if Kuwait want any MBT Americans will poke their nose first

Unlike the other Gulf Arab countries, Kuwait doesn't have the best financial situation, so it could take Pakistani weapons into account.

Kuwaiti's will NOT buy the Al-Khalid primarily because they do not need it!! They would rather go for the US M1A2 or the Leclerc's which are not only very expensive tanks but also have a lot of margins for kickbacks for the local greedy's!

This is more of a PR blitz then an actual reality on ground. Pakistan will be much better off by selling the AK to Saudi Arabia instead!

Aha!

I have to reluctantly agree with you! But no harm in dreaming! :undecided:

Kuwait already operates M84 MBTs from the former Yugoslavia and is more likley to go to Serbia or Croatia for new MBTs.

The Croatian M95 Degmann is a mean looking new MBT as well.
