Pakistan must allow Afghanistan direct trade access to India through Wagah: Ghani

Ghani is making it clear, If Pakistan does not allow land access of Indian goods via Pakistan, He will stop land access of Pakistani goods to central Asia.

If Pakistani exports to central Asia are small, they will remain small..if Afghanistan closes land access central Asia.

Route through China(if and when developed) will be long cumbersome and uneconomical, Pakistan exports to Central Asia will not grow..rather shrink as they become uncompetetive.

"Profit not made is a loss" is Economics 101.

So is Pakistan willing to forego its profits, so that India does not make profit either..that is a question Pakistanis have to answer.

But then again by allowing India land access to Afghanistan, Pakistan stands loosing the Afghan market to Indian competition. Pakistan's export to Afghanistan >>> Pakistan's export to Central Asia. Not to forget Afghanistan depends heavily on Pakistan for all its imports. So India and Afghanistan have very little to bargain with here :undecided:

India is using Chahbahar and Iranian highway to trade with Afghanistan. Afghanistan Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement (APTTA) covers all the transit issues between Pakistan and Afghanistan including Pakistan access to Central Asia.

Signalling that Afghanistan is upset with Pakistan, Mr Ghani told The Hindu: “We will not provide equal transit access to Central Asia [for Pakistani trucks].”

Mr Ghani, who was in India on his first state visit, said that it was a question of “sovereign equality”, and Pakistan must accept the “national treatment” clause agreed to in the Afghanistan Pakistan Transit and Trade Agreement (APTTA), signed in 2011, which gives each country equal access up to the national boundaries of both.

There is no Pakistan response and our newspapers and media is not covering it. You may ask why ? and the answer is APTTA !

Now - afghans threatening Pakistan...

NEW DELHI: Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani has cautioned Pakistan that if it does not open up the Wagah land transit for Afghan imports from India, his country could take counter measures, The Hindu said on Thursday.

Take a look: New Delhi rendezvous: Ghani reassures India over relationship

At present, Pakistan allows Afghan trucks carrying goods meant for India only up to its last checkpoint at Wagah, and not to the Indian checkpoint at Attari, less than a kilometre away. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India was keen on a trade agreement with Afghanistan that would include India in the APTTA. On Wednesday, Mr Ghani met leading businessmen, who expressed similar problems with land trade.

Making a strong call for India and the rest of the region to unite against the Islamic State, which he said had challenged countries from “India to Russia”, Mr Ghani said the IS threat was different from that posed by groups such as the Taliban, which wanted to “overthrow the state”.

“Now the prize is not the state, it is destruction. Our territory is being made the battleground. Our people are being killed brutally to show a spectacle. We all need to mobilise as a region,” he said. He denied downplaying the threat from Pakistan-based groups such as the Lashkar-e-Taiba and the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, saying the “drivers have changed”.

Flyovers , haha . Lolz PMLN is quite good with flyovers and roads and all .
On topic: seems like a legitimate thing to do , we must increase our trade with India . Nothing wrong in giving Afghanistan access to India , it will only help Afghanistan grow stronger . To be honest i think it might just become possible in coming times . A better bond of trust needs to be created between the two countries (India-Pakistan) .
@jamahir , @SrNair , @levina , your thoughts ?
I read this
"Pakistan allows Afghan trucks carrying goods meant for India only up to its last checkpoint at Wagah, and not to the Indian checkpoint at Attari, less than a kilometre away."
Now if that is true then it really doesn't make sense. Wagah-Peshawar-Torkham route which roughly is prolly the shortest possible route between India and Afghanistan, which would greatly reduce the logistics cost of shipping goods from India to Afghanistan. I hope Pakistan agrees to Afghan and India's demands.

This is nothing but a political statement. The whole of Afghanistan's trade come from Pakistan. I don't know how much of Pakistani goods pass through Afghanistan (Which is a risky venture anyways). Afterall, Ghani had to say something to please Indian counterparts. So such a statement should definitely serve the purpose.

Appreciated, a Very sound response.

Indians posting the same news story is not going to change anything.

Its is you who needs to come forward and make peace for the good of the region. If you are not prepared then Afghanistan can die and it is all because of you.

Pakistan has central asian route through China, do not need Afghanistan for anything.

Not happening, let Indians use Iran route instead.

.
If you are so sure of it, then call his bluff..lets see how long this newly developed Pak- Afghan bonhomie with the new Afghan government survives.
Afterall it is Afghan populace which suffers, as they have to pay higher price for the same goods.
From where? Pakistani commodities and good are smuggled in Afghanistan. So for reasons, its good for Pakistan that this trade be allowed. However, there should be proper checks in place so that to see that these "goods" are really the goods for consumption. A truck was caught by the authorities trying to smuggle Pak-Army uniforms in India...And you know what would have happen had that truck made it to India unchecked....

.
Ghani should focus his time on pushing India to make peace with Pakistan.

Making demands will be met with door firmly shut on your face.
