Pakistan must allow Afghanistan direct trade access to India through Wagah: Ghani

Why 'must" Pakistan allow our arch rival india to use our road network to improve it's economy?

Unfortunately, both india and Afghanistan are not trustworthy and will definitely misuse the facility to push illegal items in the country, try to send arms and ammo to indian & afghan sponsored terrorists, etc.

Pakistan must not allow india any kind of access to Afghanistan through Pakistan. If Afghanistan needs to buy stuff, they can directly purchase it from Pakistan which would be of much better quality and have lower freight cost.

Pakistan is going to access central asia through Xingjiang province of China, which borders 5 countries, 3 of them central asian, its a much safer route, even Iranians will prefer it to trade with China/Central Asia via Pakistan, Pak-China corridor is going to be connected to central asian countries, this way we will by pass Afghanistan, a landlocked country which will further loose its importance.

Who in his sane mind would like to do business with Central Asian countries through Indian -infested rat hole called Janglistan aka Afghanistan? Idiot.

Ghani says if Pakistan does't open the Wagah land transit for Afghan imports from India, his country would take counter measures'—Reuters

NEW DELHI: Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani has cautioned Pakistan that if it does not open up the Wagah land transit for Afghan imports from India, his country could take counter measures, The Hindu said on Thursday.

Signalling that Afghanistan is upset with Pakistan, Mr Ghani told The Hindu: “We will not provide equal transit access to Central Asia [for Pakistani trucks].”

Mr Ghani, who was in India on his first state visit, said that it was a question of “sovereign equality”, and Pakistan must accept the “national treatment” clause agreed to in the Afghanistan Pakistan Transit and Trade Agreement (APTTA), signed in 2011, which gives each country equal access up to the national boundaries of both.

At present, Pakistan allows Afghan trucks carrying goods meant for India only up to its last checkpoint at Wagah, and not to the Indian checkpoint at Attari, less than a kilometre away. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India was keen on a trade agreement with Afghanistan that would include India in the APTTA. On Wednesday, Mr Ghani met leading businessmen, who expressed similar problems with land trade.

Making a strong call for India and the rest of the region to unite against the Islamic State, which he said had challenged countries from “India to Russia”, Mr Ghani said the IS threat was different from that posed by groups such as the Taliban, which wanted to “overthrow the state”.

“Now the prize is not the state, it is destruction. Our territory is being made the battleground. Our people are being killed brutally to show a spectacle. We all need to mobilise as a region,” he said. He denied downplaying the threat from Pakistan-based groups such as the Lashkar-e-Taiba and the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, saying the “drivers have changed”.

Afghanistan has access to Karachi port through APTTA. India exports to Afghanistan has been excluded so India is using Chabahar port and the highway to Afghanistan through Iran for its exports to Afghanistan. Afghanistan can export to India through Pakistan at the Wagah-Attari border but Indian exports cannot pass through Pakistan to Afghanistan. Pakistan exports to Central Asia are negligible and we can improve the highway link through China. Ghani is just playing with words without substance to keep Indians happy and nothing will change in this policy.

Ghani is making it clear, If Pakistan does not allow land access of Indian goods via Pakistan, He will stop land access of Pakistani goods to central Asia.

If Pakistani exports to central Asia are small, they will remain small..if Afghanistan closes land access central Asia.

Route through China(if and when developed) will be long cumbersome and uneconomical, Pakistan exports to Central Asia will not grow..rather shrink as they become uncompetetive.

"Profit not made is a loss" is Economics 101.

So is Pakistan willing to forego its profits, so that India does not make profit either..that is a question Pakistanis have to answer.

This statement is for Indian consumption only ! Ghani is saying what Indians want to hear. Ghani, Indian officials and most Pakistanis know it is not not going to happen. That is why you don't see any Pakistani responding to this statement.

If you are so sure of it, then call his bluff..lets see how long this newly developed Pak- Afghan bonhomie with the new Afghan government survives.

Afterall it is Afghan populace which suffers, as they have to pay higher price for the same goods.

India is using Chahbahar and Iranian highway to trade with Afghanistan. Afghanistan Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement (APTTA) covers all the transit issues between Pakistan and Afghanistan including Pakistan access to Central Asia.
