Pakistan lodges protest over Indian armys firing
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan said on Monday it had lodged a strong protest with India over firing by Indian forces into the Pakistani part of the Kashmir region.
The firing on Saturday night occurred as the two old rivals were preparing for talks on Feb. 25, their first such meeting since India suspended a peace process after Pakistan-based militants attacked the Indian city of Mumbai in November 2008.
But the Indian army said its soldiers were fired upon by rockets and machine guns from the Pakistani side, prompting Indian troops to fire in retaliation.
It was an unprovoked firing and one soldier was injured, said Lieutenant Colonel Biplab Nath, an Indian army spokesman.
There have been several such brief exchanges of fire along the disputed border in recent weeks and both sides routinely blame the other of provocation. Reuters
