MNA – Iranian Minister of Roads and Urban Development Abbas Akhoundi said that transit line and regional freight corridor will be launched between Iran, Pakistan and Turkey.

In an interview with MNA correspondent in Lahore of Pakistan, the minister said that expanding and developing all-out relationship with neighbors has been strictly emphasized by President Rouhani.

He expounded on the relations and cooperation between Iran and Pakistan in various fields and added, “since the two countries have established fair relationship in the fields of land, air, sea and rail, responsible officials of the two countries are interested in expanding and developing mutual ties in these fields.”

With the coordination made in this regard, Iran, Pakistan and Turkey decided to launch a trilateral transit line, Akhoundi maintained.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he added, “Pakistan is home to good airports in the cities of Lahore, Quetta and Islamabad and there is a plenty of capacity and potential for the departure of Pakistan’s religious and cultural tourists to the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

Moreover, it was agreed that regional flight should be resumed between the two countries of Iran and Pakistan, so that Pakistani passengers can depart their country to Chabahar, Zahedan, Iranshahr and Zabol, the roads minister emphasized.

He further referred to the renovation of rail line between the two countries and said, “the two sides agreed to renovate rail line in order to revitalize Zahedan’s passenger line to Quetta and improve the quality of railroad for the expansion of transit of goods via rail route.”

Of the other salient achievements of his trip to Pakistan, Minister of Roads and Urban Development Akhoundi said, “expanding cooperation in the field of renovation of city’s old structure, increase of mutual cooperation in tourism and cultural fields and exchange of information between professors and students of the two countries were emphasized.”

Without Afghanistan on board?
lol.. there is no Afghanistan between Iran and Turkey.

Pak,Iran,Turkey already have rail connectivity, we have been running cargo trains since years.

Yaar, I wonder how much hassle it would take to travel to Turkey through Iran or central Asian states on ones own vehicle.

Afghanistan is not needed at all since it is on the side. If you look at the map, The shortest path is from Gawadar, Pakistan to Iran and then Iran to Turkey. But if Afghanistan wants to join it later, it can be accommodated but it will have to build a special road to connect with it.

People have done it quite a few times and there are a lot of youtube videos as well... I'm also planning all the way from Sweden to Pakistan either via Turkey-Iran route or Russia and Central Asian route.

A lot of time, patience and general hassle would have been put into its planning, resourcing it.

Iranians are worse when it comes to getting a transit visa. People have tried ever since the 70s to make the journey but the process is unbearable.

If you plan really really ahead you can pull it off but i wont suggest it for another 5 years atleast. I know a few people who have driven from UK or Central Europe to Pakistan but its not something you would do for leisure.

I hope it materialize because in one way or the other. All of them are pretty much the same people.

Yup, it needs planning and resources. A vehicle that is in really good condition and that can travel without breaking down on the way, some extra cash, and also need to know about visa requirement and rules etc.

There are ways around Afghanistan. Pakistan, Iran and Turkey are contiguous. Afghanistan holds importance as a transit hub for Pakistan with regards to central asia. Pakistan even though can reach central asia through Iran and China but transit through Afghanistan if functional will be more desirable and would make Gwader an ideal port for some Central Asian states.

Turkey, Iran, Pakistan. What a drive. I know in 1980s well into 1990s many British-Paks drove to Pakistan from UK usually taking Ford Transits which returned a profit when sold in PK.

Could they sell foreign cars in Pakistan?

The shortest land route between Stockholm and Islamabad is only 90 hrs i.e. 3.75 days of continuous driving. A person can reach easily in 15 days if some sight seeing is done along the route while one month if all famous sights along the route are to be explored.

The best route would be through the EU nations down to Turkey where you get easy access with both Swedish and Pakistani passports (whichever one you have). As for Iran I do not know how things work there now. My father drove from Sweden down to Pakistan in the 70s and loved the journey but this was during the Shah era.

I know mate and I am already planning a road trip from Stockholm to Islamabad via Turkey Iran. While the one from Russia, Central Asian states and Afghanistan is shortest according to Google only but in reality it may consume more time but all that is insignificant in comparison to the perils and dangers this route offers especially in Afghanistan. So even if I travel through Central Asia, I will rather go to Iran instead of Aghanistan until it becomes totally stable and peaceful with a single and friendly govt.

Yes, a member of my family did the same thing in 1970s. But I understand things are not the same anymore in Iran. Iranian authorities can be incredibly difficult. The fall of Shah changed everything. For the worse mostly.

I was actually looking for a train travel from London to Pakistan THIS SUMMER and had bookmarked this: https://www.seat61.com/Iran.htm ; but see the IMPORTANT UPDATE part of the site: One section in Turkey is discontinued to due security concerns and perhaps also the Van Lake connection/crossing between Iran and Turkey is not longer working?

Boy, what a trip it would have been! Kind of like my dream train trip from St. Petersburg to Beijing.

Anyway, my circumstances have changed so I am not going anywhere for many months. Sigh!
