Pakistan, India cannot be enemies forever: Janjua

National Security Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Nasser Khan Janjua reiterated on Tuesday that Pakistan and India, as two nuclear-armed neighbours, cannot be enemy forever.



“We need to engage with each other and resolve disputes,” he insisted while speaking to the Canadian High Commissioner Perry Calderwood in the federal capital.

During their meeting, the two discussed regional dynamics and bilateral ties, Pakistan’s role in eradicating terrorism, counter-terrorism cooperation, the implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP) and Pak-India relations with reference to the United States (US) offer for mediation.

Janjua underscored the need for a non-discriminatory approach while considering Pakistan membership for Nuclear Supplier Group (NSG).

The international community is overlooking the Kashmir due to their own strategic interests related to India, he said with respect to the mounting strategic imbalance of the region.

According to the adviser, it was expected that the world would stand with morality and human rights over Kashmir dispute. He added that Pakistan has welcomed a US offer for mediation between Islamabad and New Delhi to resolve the decades-old dispute, but India, on the other hand, has rejected it.

Although India considers Kashmir a bilateral issue, it has defeated the spirit of bilateralism by defying any dialogue over it, said Janjua.

“Extreme thoughts are to be mitigated through a change of perception, by winning hearts and minds and not by use of force alone,” he said

While pointing out that terrorism has become a global phenomenon, he said, “Extreme thoughts are to be mitigated through a change of perception, by winning hearts and minds and not by use of force alone.”

The adviser also highlighted the importance of more high-level visits, trade and cooperation particularly in education and development sectors, as well as, visa facilitation between the two countries for improved people to people contact.

He said that Pakistan values its relationship with Canada which has helped significantly in its progress through humanitarian assistance and developmental programmes.

The Canadian High Commissioner, on this occasion, also stressed on strengthening bilateral ties between Pakistan and Canada. “Pakistan is an important partner of Canada and we enjoy a multi-dimensional relationship with Pakistan,” he said.

The high commissioner continued that relationship with Pakistan spans trade and educational opportunities as well as collaborating in maintaining peace and counter-terrorism efforts.

Pakistan is on a threshold of economic boom and there exists a huge potential for Canadian firms to capitalise, he maintained.

We suffer from the results of a flawed inheritance . One of us is not willing to accept it.

Nothing is going to change.

Thanks! I deal internal security though so relations with India don't really govern my schedule. Contrary to the past, for many security men these days, India is only a latent threat. For the record though, as far as relations between our countries go, they're pretty bad.

As for the second part. Hostility is never good. No country has successfully developed into a major power with conflict lining its borders. For the region to progress, peace has to be a priority.

The problem lies in the fact that the Kashmir Issue has become intrinsic to the identity of both nations. For India, it its "Atootangh", for Pakistan it is its "Jugular Vein". In such a situation, either nation cannot simply forfeit its claim, lest the leader who did so be ready to be dragged from their office and lynched at the nearest chowk.
And unfortunately, that same issue is the source of all hostility and the bane of our two nations' existence. I can only imagine how different things would have been if Musharraf had stayed on for one or two more years and the Kasuri Model had been adopted. Perhaps I could have rode my bike to Laddakh :-/

As I said before, that is only to India's own detriment. As an aspiring regional power, this conflict only weighs India down. India can look away all it wants but the specter of this conflict will continue to weigh on the country's drive to regional power status. You are keen to mention the US and Chinese establishment's muted response to the Indo-Pak problem, that is not a victory for you, they're more than glad to see you squabbling with us as it just serves to eliminate one potential rival from the race.
