Win fantasy continues to elude Pakistan Down Under
By Qamar Ahmed

WE have thrown away yet another Test and with it the series before it is over. Heart-breaking indeed, the manner in which our batsmen surrendered their wickets in quest of a comfortable target on a wicket which held no terror nor any demon if only they had applied themselves to the task and grafted their runs instead of having a bash at every delivery as if they were in a hurry to catch another flight.

With a day to spare any team would have put their head down to concentrate on picking runs through the gaps as they came but the way the two openers launched the attack instead of building a partnership to set a solid base for others to build on to it was indicative of the danger that lurked around and that we all feared.

This golden opportunity to level the series before the third and final Test was thus squandered as the rest of the batsmen including the captain continued in the same vein as their openers to provide Australia the Test and the series on the plate.

From 1964 when the first Pakistan team visited Australia led by Hanif Mohammad who scored a hundred in the first innings and was given out when few runs short of another century in the second innings at the MCG in the only Test that Pakistan played to now, our aspirations of a Test series win in Australia thus remains a dream.

Even when we had stalwarts like Imran Khan, Javed Miandad, Asif Iqbal, Zaheer Abbas, Majid Khan, Wasim Bari and Sarfraz Nawaz we did not manage to fulfil our dream except a solitary win on various tours.

In a very much similar situation in 1973, Pakistan bowlers Sarfraz Nawaz and Salim Altaf with their brilliant performance having taken eight and seven wickets in the match at Sydney had provided Pakistan a chance to chase only 159 runs to win. But to their disappointment they sat and watched their batting perish for 106, thus losing the Test as Max Walker destroyed them with 6 for 15 and with Dennis Lillee taking 3 for 68.The despair and disappointment that it brings is at times mind-blowing. While travelling with various teams to cover the tours I too have suffered my own aches and pains especially watching Pakistan’s rise and fall from a situation of safety to the ignominy of embarrassing defeats.

On Australian visits I covered matches at every venue including six Tests each at the MCG and at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) which included four against Pakistan and one each against the West Indies and India.

But my only moment of joy involving Pakistan was at Sydney in 1995 when Pakistan managed to hold their nerves to win the Test with leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed taking nine wickets in the match. Having already lost the series, Pakistan under Wasim Akram had set Australia 247 runs to win, to bowl them out for 172.

What also remains etched in my mind is the century that Ijaz Ahmed (137) scored in the first innings which really put Pakistan on course to a great win.

Had Pakistan not been cheated out by poor umpiring in the Hobart Test of 1999 I would have had another moment to cherish. The Australians chasing a target of 369 were reduced to 126-5 when Adam Gilchrist and Justin Langer having edged Wasim Akram were saved by patriotic Australian umpiring. The contact of the bat with the ball could be heard across the Tasman Sea into Sydney an hour and a half flight away. Such was audacity of the cruel decision.

A Test where the term ‘Doosra’ was coined in the game. Saqlain Mushtaq with his 6 for 46 in the first innings had done most of the damage bowling the mystery delivery that went the other way and got the Aussies on the hook. In the press conference later during the day he had described that delivery as ‘Doosra’, when questioned by the media.

After the conference when I was asked what Saqlain meant by the ‘Doosra’, the Australian press the next day ran this eye-catching banner headline in nearly every paper. ‘THE DOOSRA’ in Hobart Mercury thus got word going for ever.

Pakistan having lost the series already will be playing their final Test at The Bellerive Oval, perched on top of a hill looking over the Tasman Sea where the wind blows, the clouds hover above in heavy atmosphere to help men with swing and seaming ability to create havoc.

The present Pakistan team neither have the gumption nor the guts or the skill to cope with what will be in store in the final Test.

I fear that that the result will not be any different from the other two Tests that we threw away because of poor fielding, keeping and of course through indiscreet batting display. The less said the better.

What is really worrying is the way the whole thing is being handled. The gravy train of calling players from the tour and replacing them with others is once again on the move which does not really serve the deep-rooted malice which is a threat to our most loved game.

It is time that those who matter and are at the helm stop this jiggery-pokery which now threatens cricket’s future in Pakistan.

Ex-Pak coach Lawson wanted Rixon help to correct Akmal's flaws, ANI,
10 January 2010

Hobart, Jan. 10 (ANI): At one point of time, former Pakistan coach Geoff Lawson became so concerned about Kamran Akmal's technical flaws that he asked Australian wicketkeeping specialist Steve Rixon for advice.

According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, Rixon, the mentor of Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, was willing to coach Akmal but he was rejected because the Pakistan Cricket Board refused to pay 5000 dollars in fee.

The News quoted Rixon as saying that the decision has returned to haunt Pakistan, who crashed to a second Test defeat last Wednesday after Akmal endured a nightmare behind the stumps by dropping four second-innings catches.

"I would have absolutely helped him. Henry actually rang me when he was the Pakistan coach, trying to get me to work with Akmal. But it didn't eventuate because the board was counting their pennies," he said.

"At the time, I had ICL commitments in India, I wasn't far away and there was a window of opportunity for me to help Kamran, which I was more than happy to do."

"Look at the two keepers (Haddin and Akmal) and their performances in that (Sydney) Test and it was the difference. Brad was great and if Kamran takes one of those four dropped catches, it's all over, Pakistan win the Test," he added.

"I wasn't asking for much, it was petty, but for whatever reason the PCB didn't want a bar of it. They deserve everything they get." (ANI)

Is Umar Akmal's sudden 'stiff back' ploy to save brother Kamran from the axe?,
ANI, 11 January 2010

Hobart, Jan 11(ANI): Pakistan middle-order batsman Umar Akmal has complained of a stiff back, making him a doubtful starter for the third and final Test against Australia in Hobart.

However, it is believed that Umar's back problem that came out of the blue is linked to his elder brother Kamran Akmal's possible axing from the Hobart Test.

According to reports, the 19-year-old batsman could be faking the problem in a bid to pressurize the team management to retain Kamran in the squad.

Umar, who made a sensational debut last November against New Zealand, has already become an important member of the national team due to his aggressive batting. He had shown no signs of fitness problems, but suddenly complained of a back injury after a couple of practice sessions at the Bellerive Oval.

Meanwhile, coach Intikhab Alam ruled out any serious problem, and said: "Umar has a stiff back. It's nothing serious and we expect him to be fit for the third Test."

"It is not uncommon for players to have such problems and I think that with some treatment he should be okay," The News quoted Intikhab, as saying.

Alam had earlier said that Sarfraz Ahmed will replace Kamran as the wicketkeeper for the Test, due to his dismal performance behind the stumps on the tour so far.

The decision came after several former Pakistan players had suggested replacing Kamran with Sarfarz, saying that his poor wicketkeeping was the main cause for Pakistan's defeat in the Sydney Test. (ANI)

if yusuf and PCB are serious about this test, they out be kicking out kamran and misbah.

Misbah's performance had certainly been poor in recent times; surely Pakistan needs to try someone else in his place. How long the PCB will keep on testing "the tried and tested ones"?

Umar suspected of faking strain in protest against Kamran's sacking

EMBATTLED Pakistan has plunged into a fresh crisis amid accusations that young batsman Umar Akmal tried to pull out of the Hobart Test in protest at the sacking of older brother Kamran.

The Herald Sun can reveal some Pakistan players suspected Umar may have feigned an injury after he declared himself unfit for the third Test, starting Thursday.

"I'm not playing, I have a side strain," Umar, 19, told the Herald Sun at the team's hotel yesterday morning.

The development came just 24 hours after his brother, Kamran, and Pakistan cricket officials were at loggerheads over who would keep in the Test, with the national board insisting replacement keeper Sarfraz Ahmad would play.

But fearing Umar was faking injury yesterday in protest at his brother's treatment, Pakistan sent him for medical scans, which revealed no obvious injury.

Umar was passed fit and told he must play even though he later claimed he still had muscle tightness.

To add to the confusion, Kamran maintained his brother had a "back problem" and Umar sat out training at Bellerive Oval yesterday.

When told yesterday that Umar had declared himself unfit, Australian skipper Ricky Ponting said: "It might be in protest. It's a strange situation. Umar has looked their second best batsman behind (Mohammad) Yousuf."

In another twist, Kamran will have a say in whether he plays in Hobart because, as vice-captain, as he is part of the four-man selection committee, along with captain Yousuf, coach Intikhab Alam and team manager Abdul Raqeeb.

NO ONE IS BIGGER THAN THE GAME OR THE COUNTRY. IF THIS IS TRUE THEN BOTH BRO SHOULD BE THROWN OUT OF THE TEAM ALONG WITH OTHER TROUBLEMAKERS!

kemran is so shameless, after such a bad performance he is saying he should be in the team and daring to use his brother as his tool.

if the team decides not to give kemran another chance so umar should respect it and should not black mail the team by his current performance. he will do this on his own perils. he will be dropped and may lose his career.

i think he and his brother has to be shown exit from the team no matter what if i have been the CM of the boared i have sacked them out of the team i think time has to come to bring fresh blodd not to bring relatives in the teams thats what happens and akmal should not play at any cost even if we have to play with 10 players we dont play asssss hole kamran akmal
