Pakistan has 326m barrels in oil reserves, Senate informed

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has more than 326 million barrels of oil and 29,790 billion cubic feet of gas reserves, the Senate was told on Wednesday. The petroleum adviser said the country had 185,165 million tonnes of coal reserves, mainly in Sindh. The demand for oil is 19.2 million tonnes a year and that for gas 5.3 million cubic feet a day. He also said there were approximately 4,504 million tonnes of copper-gold resources in Reko Diq in Balochistan, and there are 292 employees working on the project including, 247 local people. Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan told the House that out of the $5.9 billion assistance for October 2005 earthquake victims committed by donors, $3.41 billion have been disbursed and the remaining $2.5 billion are in the pipeline. More than Rs 89 billion have been paid as compensation to the earthquake victims – Rs 57 billion in rural housing subsidy, Rs 2.86 billion in urban housing subsidy, Rs 5.2 billion in the Livelihood Support Cash Grant Programme and Rs 13.2 billion as compensation for deaths and injuries. The minister for housing told the Senate that construction of flats for government employees from Grade 1 to 16 in Sector G-11 of the capital would cost Rs 1.78 billion. He said the cost had to be revised because of the escalation in price of building material, labour and petroleum, a delay in the handing over of land and late deposit of instalments by allottees. tahir niaz

I think the petroleum advisor meant that the country has 186 billion tonnes of coal reserves, mainly in Sindh.

Sindh CM briefed on Thar coal progress
Tuesday, January 27, 2009
Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Qaim Ali Shah was briefed on Monday on the progress of Thar coal and power plant during a meeting with a five-member delegation from M/s Oracle Coal Fields Ptc UK at the Chief Minister House.

The firm is the first from the UK investing in Pakistan for coal mining and power generation. The meeting was informed that the firm has been allotted 66.1 kms in Block VI, Thar (about 32 kms north of Islamkot town). The block contains 1.4 billion tonnes of coal.

It was further said that the UK firm Oracle under the Sindh Carbon Energy Limited has planned the Q1-2010 for industrial sales and a power plant with mine design for the production of 2.5 million tonnes coal per annum.

The initial production of the Thar coal and power plant is expected in 2010-2011, and full output of 2.5 million tonnes coal is expected by 2012. Pakistan possesses 185 billion tones of coal reservoirs. http://www.thenews.com.pk/daily_detail.asp?id=159272

Recent discoveries in the Thar region of Pakistan have given rise to a discovery of nearly 185 billion tonnes.

Pakistan must exploit these oil, gas, and coal reserves. Now is the best time.

Oil has been leased to foreign companies, coal will follow suite soon. Let's see what happens about Gas.

In any case we do not have the technology to exploit these resources fully ourselves.

How did Arabs exploit their natural resources?

Dubai was nothing but a desert before they found their natural resources.

Hon members,

According to the statistics, Pakistan has only two years oil reserves and 10 year’s gas reserves. (19.2 million tons equals 141 million barrels and 5.3 billion cubic feet per day equals 1.9 trillion cubic feet). We must not ignore that gas production falls far short of requirements.

Normally energy demand increases at half the GDP growth rate. Assuming a growth rate target of 6% per years GDP rate and energy growth of 3%; Pakistan is very short of energy including oil, gas and coal. We should not put too many hopes on the huge reserves of Lignite coal in Sindh. It would take a lot of investment and a long time before we can utilize the same.

Copper and Gold reserves are no doubt substantial, but these are located in very remote areas and therefore difficult to exploit. Compared to international standards, reserves 326 million barrels and 29 trillion cubic feet gas is “peanuts”. Pakistan is energy starved and IPI pipeline is badly needed. This is not belittling Pakistan but to put things in proper perspective and be realistic.

I thought the 186 billion coal reserves found in Thar was substantial for Pakistan's energy needs. The article made a mistake Pakistan doesn't have 186 million coal reserves, Pakistan has 186 billion coal reserves mostly in Thar, Sindh.

I don't take their words Pakistan has more coal, oil and Gas reserves...something is fishy here..

Data for: 2006
Report Released: October 29, 2007
International coal resources. Worldwide, compared to all other fossil fuels, coal is the most abundant and widely distributed across the continents. Estimates of the world's total recoverable reserves of coal in 2004 were about 998 billion short tons. The resulting ratio of coal reserves to production is approximately 164 years, meaning that at current rates of production (and no change in reserves), coal reserves could in theory last for more than one and one-half centuries.

The distribution of coal reserves around the world varies notably from that of oil and gas. Significant reserves are found in the United States and Russia but not in the Middle East. The United States with 27 percent and Russia with 17 percent account for nearly half of global coal reserves. China (13 percent), Australia (9 percent), South Africa (5 percent), and Kazakhstan (3 percent) also have significant amounts of the world's recoverable coal reserves.

I got this article from a Pakistani-American website. I think they misquoted the Pteroleum advisor because in many news resources it says Pakistan has 186 billion coal reserves mostly in Thar, Sindh.
