The government is set to fulfill Saudi Arabia’s request for military assistance in its offensive against Houthi rebels in Yemen within next week, sources privy to the development told The Express Tribune.

The top civil and military leadership met to discuss the Yemen situation during an adjournment in a joint session of Parliament held on Monday to discuss the same issue.

“The current week is important for Pakistan to prepare and meet Saudi Arabia’s demands,” the sources said.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif chaired the meeting, which was also attended by army chief general Raheel Sharif among others.

According to sources, the government will fulfill all requirements of Saudi Arabia in letter and spirit within a week.

Further, sources claimed the top civil and military leadership expressed their satisfaction over Defence Minister Khawaja Asif’s statement on the Yemen situation, which he read at the joint session of Parliament earlier today.

The defence minister had stated that Saudi Arabia has asked Pakistan for military aircraft, warships and soldiers.

“Saudi Arabia has asked for combat planes, warships and soldiers,” Asif, who also visited Turkey to discuss Yemen, said, without specifying where Saudi wanted them deployed.

Asif read his written statement, introducing a motion on the Yemen conflict and whether to join Saudi forces bombing the war-hit country.

“It is important to ensure unity among Muslim countries; PM Nawaz is working to make a peaceful solution to this crisis possible,” the defence minister added.

The federal minister said leaders of Pakistan and Turkey have same stance on the Yemen issue – standing by Saudi Arabia.

“There is a need to find a peaceful situation to maintain unity among Muslim countries; all decisions taken by the government will reflect the aspirations of the people of Pakistan,” he added.

The top civil and military brass upheld that Asif’s statement indirecly conveyed its message to Saudi Arabia and Iran.

“The government’s statements were drafted after a consensus and with support from the General Headquarters (GHQ),” the sources asserted.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, PM’s senior aide Sartaj Aziz, Army chief General Raheel Sharif, Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah, chief of Naval Staff Air Marshal Sohail Aman, and the foreign Secretary are in attendance.

Saudi asked for warplanes, warships and soldiers, says Asif

At the start of the joint session, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif says Saudi Arabia has asked Pakistan for military aircraft, warships and soldiers.

“Saudi Arabia has asked for combat planes, warships and soldiers,” Asif, who also visited Turkey to discuss Yemen, says, without specifying where Saudi wanted them deployed.

Asif reads his written statement, introducing a motion on Yemen war and whether to join Saudi forces bombing the war-hit country.

“PM Nawaz believes the subject merits indepth discussion to help the government make the right decision on the crucial issue,” he reads, listing efforts made so far to evacuate stranded Pakistanis in Yemen.

Thanking Saudi government for giving safe passage to Pakistani rescuers, Asif said the Kingdom played an important role in ensuring safe return of stranded nationals back to Pakistan.

As Asif continues to read the motion, he provides background on the turmoil in Yemen to his fellow lawmakers.

“Pakistan attaches great importance to Saudi Arabia’s territorial integrity,” he reiterates his government’s stance.

“We will stand with our Saudi brothers,” he emphasises, narrating details of meeting between Pakistani delegation and Saudi officials in Riyadh recently. ”It is important to ensure unity among Muslim countries; PM Nawaz is working to make a peaceful solution to this crisis possible,” Asif says, referring to the premier’s visit to Turkey.

The defence minister says the premier and other senior leaders will continue meeting other Muslim leaders for a quick and lasting solution to the Yemen problem.

“Pakistan and Turkey are both concerned about the overthrow of a legitimate government in Yemen and resulting problems in the region,” he added.

The federal minister says leaders of Pakistan and Turkey have same stance on the Yemen issue – standing by Saudi Arabia.

“There is a need to find a peaceful situation to maintain unity among Muslim countries; all decisions taken by the government will reflect the aspirations of the people of Pakistan,” he says, as he stresses the importance of today’s debate and how it will help formulate government’s policy on the issue.

Praising PM Nawaz for his past decisions ‘in favour of Pakistan’, Asif says the premier will never do anything that will not benefit the country. He extended his tribute to Pakistan Army and praised the soldiers for fighting a crucial war against militancy with limited resources.

It seems Armed Forces has decided to go in

Saudi asked for warplanes, warships and soldiers, says Asif

Warships and warplanes they have enough. Now the thing is who can handle real heat of Yemeni mountains and deserts.

if they r gonna send troops in yeman they should be under our own commanders

two things to consider :

1. Pakistan army get another toy to play for next 3-4 years and in consequence less energy for India specific covert operations and more importantly greater rapprochement with Afghanistan Govt to check Talibans.

2. India should support diplomatically Iranian position in United Nation. Russia is already supporting them in UN.Hope China also see wisdom of Saudi Arabian withdrawal from Yemen and bringing Saudi arabia,Hauthi Shia and Saleh faction to negotiating table. Principle stance of India always remained on cessation of violence, negotiations, multilateral peace process etc.

We should stay away from this .We dont need to exploit this mess. Both Arabs and Persians are equal to us .
Iran will handle it nicely .They knows how to deal with these issues.

Looks like operational experience is waiting Pakistan.Good luck :enjoy:

Well descision was made after Turkey approval they are going to give full support to Saudia as well so i don't see any problem.

Yeah in return here is what Pakistan is demanding

In an event of India Pakistan conflict, the GCC will aide and stand by Pakistan as well as deport Indian diaspora
from the GCC as diplomatic tool.

We should stay away from this .We dont need to exploit this mess. Both Arabs and Persians are equal to us .
Iran will handle it nicely .They knows how to deal with these issues.

Surely Iranian know how to deal with the issue. Still Iran would need votes in UN.

We are not doing favor to anybody because we are only following our age old principle stance .That's it.

2 point to consider:

  1. Iranians are not gonna forget Pakistani position on Yemen.
  2. We need Iranian support in Afghanistan so that Talibans do not wreck havoc there.
Stars are perfectly aligned here.

And we cant provoke Saudis in this matter .In Afghanistan we have a lots of other options.

if they r gonna send troops in yeman they should be under our own commanders
Overall command and logistics will be of Saudi Arabia. Control of Pak forces would be the responsibility of the PA.
According to sources, the government will fulfill all requirements of Saudi Arabia in letter and spirit within a week.
Does that mean air support and boots on the ground? Pakistan is playing a dangerous game.

Another trap I would say .Arabs and India is heavily linked by trader .With more than 200 billions of trade that is in Arabs favour.
And remittances played a small part in our giant economy .But a full GCC support will help Pakistan to prevent a full scale action from us.But only for now .
At any case at least for next two decades India wont go for a conflict because we dont interested in wastin our resources .And even if there is any conflict after that .this GCC deal (if it is signed) wont help you .Because at that time Indian diaspora would be too less and our dependency to their oil is also less.

1.GCC and India trade currently is $160 billion and that too largely in favour of GCC.
2.Deporting Indian diapora which is largely muslims, who want to anger 200 million Muslims of India ?

All that GCC can do a lip service to Pakistan.

Oil prices would be coming down more due to
  1. Shale gas revolution in USA. USA and European market for Crude oil is shrinking faster. Add that to Climate change,Kyoto Protocol and Refocussing towards Renewable energy In Europe.
  2. Nuclear Pact with Iran would reduce sanctions and freer flow of oil trade. India can ramp up oil imports from Iran and Iraq.
Due to above reasons, Saudi need market like India,China etc for their oil.

How can Saudis get provoked if India call for Negotiation and multilateral Peace process? if they , then be it.

What about our diaspora in there ?A lot of Indians is still opting KSA for jobs
It seems you dont have any idea about KSA influence in Muslim World .And why should we interefere in others matter ?
Even Chinese dont interested in these issues .We should adopt a neutral stand here both in UN and also in politics
