Pakistan Didn't Pay a Penny for South Asia University; India Stops Midway

punjabis might be majority in pakistan but minority in India. Specifically sikhs might see hindus as enemy (being minority) and have less of an anger towards pakistanis (84/RSS help that feeling)... and I already accepted if language is same, its much easier to be friends.
For vast majority of India, its some distant land where demons live and plan attack on us, and a pakistani will be seen with fear/anger/curiosity. Not many make difference between state and people.
Spoken like the perfect pseudo secular Islamofascist apologetic. :enjoy:
@Sidak - I love this guy's rants. :D

I am usually not offensive however pardon me for asking this - What kind of garbage you have filled your head with?? The worst effected party of partition was Punjab...and leave that history lesson aside...are you saying that Sikhs in India hate hindu's and that's why they may like Pakistani's?? Sorry how old are you??

Yes,because of ur behaviour with our students. One student in chennai was killed by his university students just cuz he was a pakistani.Thats why
i am not sure about that part however do you want me to fill this post space with hundreds of articles where Pakistani patients, students, visitors etc etc have been treated with love?? If all those incidents are not good enough to make an impression then why holding on to one such incident?

hmmm!!!!

Thanks I'll look those up and keep Singapore in mind. Is this something I can just do a bachelors and earn a decent amount of money in before thinking of Masters or do I have to do my masters to get the dream job? Also you said engineering Bachelors can go to and Econ Masters, is that a good idea or should I avoid it?

Depending on what you want to do, a Bachelors can be enough for a start. In the private sector, a lot of people work for a few years before their Masters. In the UN organisations (and other decent policy/think tank jobs), including the one I work in, a masters is the minimum qualification. One thing to keep in mind is that the quality of jobs you get after a Bachelors depends a lot on the prestige of the University you went to. So if you're from the best university in a given country, you can often get a job, that isn't entirely boring and mechanical, straight after your Bachelors. From lower ranked universities, undergrads usually get donkey work. After a masters, at least in econ jobs, your technical ability matters a lot more than which university you went to. Most places will ask you technical questions, ask to see writing samples etc. during masters level job interviews.

Doing an engineering undergrad followed by an econ masters in not a bad idea. I know tons of people who've done that (and succeeded) and there are many well known economists with that background. The only thing that the engineering undergrads sometimes lack, is the ability to think like an economist. For instance, when writing their master's thesis, a few of them struggle to come up with good research ideas. That aside, having done a good engineering degree, you'll be able to handle an econ masters.

The best way to figure out what you might enjoy is to get a very basic undergrad level econ textbook, go through it and see if it interests you. Principles of Economics by N Gregory Mankiw is the first textbook used in many econ programs all over the world, and is a good place to start. It won't contain any of the math-y, technical stuff but will give you a basic idea of the stuff you'll be studying.

well it surely came out in wrong way.. :)

I bet the money can be found in Nawaz takla's various accounts abroad.

Wow okay so this is nice to hear, so of those you listed, which is the top best university in Canada?

I'd say Toronto overall and UBC (Vancouver School of Economics) for econ. Both will give you a very good range of options in terms of jobs and masters programs. McGill is prestigious as well and should get you a good job, it doesn't have a great econ department though.

Horus, I'm going to hold you to your promise you made that the new generation = new way of thinking.

This university could be the hotbed of great interaction between students and academia from each of the countries, coming together to promote great cultural bonds. Where students would get to experience an education that would introduce them to the various member countries rich culture and history.

You would see students from all over the world joining this university and not just from the region. Imagine having that level of cultural exchange. Education of this sorts is a beautiful thing. Don't let the poison of bias blind you.

.

I agree with the sentiments.

But disagree with implementation.

At this stage, the easiest thing was to establish endowments in the existing universities of SAARC.

For example

-- SAARC funds should be used to establish one chair each in Karachi University and Punjab university in Lahore. These chairs should be filled with faculty that specializes in at least one SAARC members' language, culture etc

-- Same thing in at least two universities of India, BDesh and other SAARC countries.

Building just one university and even that in India means too many hassles for students to get visa / funding etc. It is easier for Pakistani/Indian students to study in US than it is to go to the each others' countries. Too much bad blood I suppose.

Thus defeating the whole purpose.

Peace

i am not sure about that part however do you want me to fill this post space with hundreds of articles where Pakistani patients, students, visitors etc etc have been treated with love?? If all those incidents are not good enough to make an impression then why holding on to one such incident?

NEW DELHI: The Parliamentary standing committee on external affairs has asked the ministry to “pursue” Pakistan’s failure to contribute a single penny towards the running of South Asian University since its inception. The agreed formula was that India would contribute 51.8 per cent towards the operational costs, with Pakistan having the next highest share at 11.83 per cent.

Pakistan has the unique distinction among all SAARC members of never paying its contribution ever for the University. Starting from 2010, Pakistan owes a grand total of $7.8 million (Rs 49.5 crore) towards the project.

The external affairs ministry standing committee, specifically asked the ministry to pursue the matter of Pakistan’s non-contribution “at the SAARC forum and emphasize the need for timely contribution by each of the member states”.

In the first two years of 2010 and 2011, India promptly paid up its dues which were $756,000 (`4.7 crore) and $3 million (`19 crore), respectively. The problem started from 2012, when India paid its dues but fell short of $193.566 (`1.2 crore). The figures furnished by the MEA to the committee show that in 2013, India failed to pay the entire amount of $10.19 million (`64.6 crore). The quantum for contributions received this year also remains zero for India, so far. It has to contribute an enhanced amount of $14.3 million (`90.7 crore) in 2014. India has been facing a deficit problem for the last 2-3 years which have seen cuts across ministries. The ministry told the panel that the enhanced allocation towards the university will be not just towards the commencement of the construction, but also towards its share of operational contribution.

Besides India and Pakistan, the only other country who has not paid their contribution for 2013 and 2014 is Maldives. Afghanistan, the poorest country in South Asia, has dutifully given its contribution for last four years – but has yet to send its allocation for 2014. All the other SAARC members, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka have made their payments.

The new timeline for setting up the campus is 2017. The cost of the construction has been revised to `334 crore from the initial `204.2 crore. MEA reiterated that “government is committed to bear 100 per cent capital costs towards the establishment of the university”.

?? is it even making sense?? Pakistan is not doing a favor to India...this is a bloody SAARC initiative...however gullible and blind people can't see

well it surely came out in wrong way.. :)

Take my advice...please stop commenting further on this...because whatever you are writing right now is coming out wrong...

There is no such thing like Indian Sikh or NRI sikh...no denying the fact that you would see more resentment among NRI sikhs against India than people here...but then aren't we responsible for this?? Most of the NRI sikhs are people who faced the wrath of their own country during 84 riots and a decade of terrorism with no sight of justice even after 4 decades...Now simply looking at NRI sikhs as Pak sympathizers and Hindu haters is just plain absurd!!

One dirty fish spoils the pond:lol:

However sane people don't look like this...they prefer taking the dirty fish out to keep the pond fresh...question is are you among sane folks??

It is expected from Pakistan but I hate the very fact that India stopped paying midway.. Education in SAARC needs to be the top priority.. we don't care Pakistan pay or not they can very well invest the amount on more of those lal masjid type madarsas as that is the best thing to help Pakistan..

Thank you Afghanistan for being the role model and showing even India what it takes to stick to your promise!! I think India should get back on the funds and keep the promise of setting the university for the good of students of SAARC specially the students from Afghanistan.. No Pakistani student though because I believe they don't deserve it..
