Former Pakistan captain, Asif Iqbal, has lauded veteran batsman Younis Khan, for his heroics in the ongoing Test series against Australia, and said that the 'coveted achievements' made by the seasoned batsman, should shut up his critics forever.

Iqbal said Younis' performance against Australia should forever silence all his critics, adding that apart from equalling Herbert Sutcliffe's 89-year record, of three hundreds in three consecutive innings against Australia, he has also helped 'rejuvinate' Pakistan cricket.

Younis' great form started after a disastrous series against Sri Lanka, and an equally dismal thrashing at the hands of Australia, in the T20 and ODI series, prior to the ongoing Test rubber, The Dawn reported.

He added that Younis was excluded from the ODI squad, as the national selectors had made it clear that 'he was not in the frame'.

Iqbal said the series against Australia, in which a Pakistan whitewash was expected, has turned around the fortunes of the national team.

He added that few would have expected Pakistan to beat Australia comprehensively, and praised Younis for his steely determination.

Iqbal, who played 58 Tests between 1964 and 1980, said that too many cricketers resort to media, to reply to criticisms levelled against them, but it never really works

He reiterated that the best way to answer critics was to let the bat do the talking, which was the case with Younis.

Iqbal said that Younis' runs have come at an excellent rate, and anyone trying to exclude him from Pakistan's World Cup squad, would be considerably 'less than intelligent'.

Interestingly, Younis after his marathon 213-run knock on Friday, lifted his Test run tally exactly equal to that of the great West Indian, Sir Gary Sobers, the report added.

Younis Khan hammers Australia to lift Pakistan to 2-304 on day one

Khan claims his third consecutive century as Australia run out of ideas on a flat batting track in the second Test

Pakistan’s Younis Khan struck his third consecutive century as Australia ran out of ideas on a flat batting track on the opening day of the second cricket Test.

Australia’s hopes of levelling the two-Test series with victory in Abu Dhabi faded after Pakistan won the toss and reached 2-304 at stumps on Thursday.

Younis is unbeaten on 111, having added 208 for the third wicket with Azhar Ali (101 not out).

The 93-Test veteran Younis hadn’t made a hundred against Australia before this series and now has three in a career tally of 27, a Pakistan record.

Overlooked for the one-dayers against Australia earlier this month, the 36-year-old had considered not even making himself available for the Tests.

Offspinner Nathan Lyon removed Ahmed Shehzad (35) leg-before and Mohammad Hafeez (45) was caught behind off Mitchell Johnson’s bowling with the score on 2-96.

Going to tea at 2-158, Pakistan put on another 146 without loss in the third session.

Australia captain Michael Clarke used eight bowlers, including himself.

“We tried just about everything,” Clarke said. “We probably missed a few chances once again which was disappointing.

“Our bowlers tried everything. They fought hard. By the end of the day I didn’t have too many ideas left.

“I tried guys in extremely unorthodox positions to try and make something happen.”

Australia made two bold moves before play, recalling offspinning allrounder Glenn Maxwell for struggling batsman Alex Doolan, while left-arm quick Mitchell Starc replaced spinner Steve O’Keefe.

Starc finished the day 0-37 off 11 overs and Maxwell 0-36 off eight.

Clarke employed Johnson in a rarely used fielding position at straight hit, two-thirds of the way to the boundary, off paceman Peter Siddle’s bowling.

Azhar appeared angry about having Johnson in his line of sight and pulled away from his batting stance in the final over before lunch.

Short-leg Steve Smith and first-slipper David Warner missed half-chances from Ali’s bat on 34 and 46, respectively.

Pakistan are chasing their first Test-series win over Australia since 1994.

Clarke made the call to front the media himself after play. “As captain of the team it’s always been my responsibility to make sure I am standing tall when things don’t go to plan,” Clarke said. “I’ve never been one to blame other people.

Clarke said it was up to him to find a way to get 20 wickets.

Things went exactly to plan for Pakistan, however. “Since the conditions were good for batting and we also won the toss so it was the team’s demand to put a big total on the board,” Azhar said.

“The opening partnership helped us to carry the momentum and everything went according to the plan.”

Pakistan v Australia: Hosts continue to dominate in Abu Dhabi

Second Test, Abu Dhabi (day three):

Pakistan 570-6 dec & 61-2 v Australia 261

Match scorecard

Pakistan moved closer to their first Test series win over Australia since 1994 after dismissing the tourists for 261 on day three in Abu Dhabi.

Seamer Imran Khan, in only his second Test, finished with 3-60 and only Mitchell Marsh (87), who hit 13 fours and a six, passed 50 for Australia.

Ahead by 309, Pakistan did not enforce the follow-on and lost early wickets but closed on 61-2, a lead of 370.

They lead the two-match series 1-0 after winning by 221 runs in Dubai.

After nearly two days toiling in the field, Australia began the day on 22-1 and lost David Warner in the fifth over of the morning, while Pakistan successfully reviewed an lbw decision to dismiss Steve Smith for a duck to make it 100-5 before lunch.

Pakistan have not won a Test series against Australia since 1994

The first Test in Dubai saw a record Pakistan win over Australia in terms of runs

Skipper Michael Clarke (47) added 64 with Marsh for the sixth wicket and looked decisive against the spinners.

But three runs short of his 28th Test half-century, the 33-year-old fell to Imran's reverse swing as a delivery curved back from outside the off stump and went between bat and pad.

Marsh fell 13 runs short of his maiden Test century in only his second appearance, hitting a full toss from Imran to mid-on.

Johnson, who destroyed England with 37 wickets in Australia's 5-0 whitewash last winter, was hit for two fours and a six in the first five balls of the Pakistan innings by Ahmed Shehzad.

He bowled him with a rapid yorker next ball and also beat Mohammad Hafeez for pace in his next over.

But Pakistan record Test century-maker Younus Khan, who has made two hundreds and a double ton in his last three innings, finished unbeaten on 16 and now has 438 runs to his name in the short series.
