Prime Minister Imran Khan will travel to the United States on Sunday hoping the arrest of Jamaat Ud Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed and progress in the Afghan peace talks will help secure a favourable reception.

PM Imran is expected to try to mend fences and attract much-needed investment during his meeting with US President Donald Trump, scheduled to take place on July 22, in exchange for assurances of full cooperation in ending the war in Afghanistan and fighting militant threats.

Trump, a property developer turned reality TV star, and PM Imran, World Cup-winning captain of the Pakistan cricket team, both came to office after achieving fame away from politics and the personal chemistry between the two may be decisive.

"A lot will depend on the kind of mood that President Trump and indeed Prime Minister Imran Khan find themselves in," said Farzana Sheikh, an associate fellow at the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London.

"Neither of them is known to be particularly predictable."

Battling to stave off a balance of payments crisis and forced to seek a bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Pakistan is badly in need of foreign investment but security is likely to be the main focus of the visit.

PM Imran will be accompanied by Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa.

Analysts believe he will play a key role in behind-the-scenes discussions where much of the serious business of the visit will take place, with the military looking to persuade Washington to restore aid and cooperation.

Last year, Trump cut off hundreds of millions of dollars in security assistance to Pakistan, accusing Islamabad of offering "nothing but lies and deceit" while giving safe haven to terrorists, a charge angrily rejected by Islamabad.

But Imran will believe the arrest on Wednesday of Hafiz Saeed, the alleged mastermind of a four-day militant attack on the Indian city of Mumbai in 2008, will send the right signals to Trump, who exuberantly welcomed the news on Twitter.
More than 160 people were killed in the four-day militant attacks. Saeed — who has a $10 million US bounty on his head — is designated a terrorist by the United States and the United Nations.

Trump said Saeed's arrest "after a 10-year search", was the result of pressure from his administration on Pakistan to get tougher on militants.

But Saeed has been in and out of Pakistan prisons for the last decade and even addressed public rallies.

As well as assurances that it is cracking down on militants, PM Imran is likely to stress Pakistan's role in bringing the Taliban to the negotiating table with the United States.

Trump has made no secret of his desire to end US military involvement in Afghanistan and Pakistan's cooperation will be essential to any deal to end the war and ensure the country does not become a base for militant groups like Islamic State.

"The United States, Russia and China know that without Pakistan's co-operation, there can be no settlement in Afghanistan," Sheikh said.

India will be watching the talks closely.

New Delhi has pushed the Financial Action Task Force, global money laundering and terror finance watchdog, to put Pakistan on a blacklist of countries that fail to meet international standards in stopping financial crime.

But it has had its own problems with the Trump administration over trade and is concerned about being shut out of the peace process in Afghanistan.

I think since Zia times this will be the first time we will be meeting as relative(emphasis) equals. Personally I dont much care for what comes out of this initial meeting. There may not be much that actually comes out depending on posturing that both sides take. However if there is realization that we arecno longer a vassal state then this would be a great victory for Paklands. First sign of it might be a promise of US investment in CPEC. IF the US govtt joind in sanctioning CPEC investment and industrial setup, we are in for a huge win and the windfall from US, Russia and China investing together would really propel Paklands forward.

PAC 3 is not a good system. Reports on it show its been failing to intercept even basic Houthi missiles. We should stay away from major Russian systems like the S-400 as that's the US red line, and so should look at similar systems from China or Europe. Cobras, MRAPs, and F-16s are what Pakistan needs.

PAC-3 MSE should be looked into if possible its good system with Javelin ATGMs.

I think if available PAC- MSE and THAAD with HQ-9/16 combo are better for Pakistan then S-400, Buk, Pantsir Systems of Russia

There is reason to be optimistic, but one never knows with the Orange Ape in office.

Pakistan's hand is made stronger by its current unanimity of leadership, and weaker by its economic woes. USA's hand is made stronger with its military and economic resources, and weaker by its predicament in Afghanistan.

Both sides must tread a fine line while jockeying for the best bargain with each other. The end result would likely be surprisingly positive, I suspect.

WASHINGTON: Prime Minister Imran Khan will likely be accompanied by Pakistan's top military brass during his official visit to the United States, official sources told The News.

Prime Minister Imran Khan is scheduled to be here on a three-day visit starting from July 21, and meet President Donald Trump on the 22nd at the White House. The prime minister is also supposed to address the Pakistani diaspora and business community.

The Pakistani Embassy has not yet released any details of the official schedule, and remains tight-lipped about the PM’s entourage. It is however believed that Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Adviser Finance, Adviser Trade and Investment and other cabinet members would be part of the delegation.

Besides an expected one on one meeting with President Donald Trump, the two sides would hold a delegation level interaction to discuss bilateral and regional concerns. Official sources added that since the Trump administration is desperate to sort out issues related to US withdrawal from Afghanistan and seek Pakistan's help in this regard, the military brass is also likely to be in town around the same time. The embassy has, so far, avoided confirming this.

Pakistan recently hosted the first Afghan Peace Conference where representatives of key Afghan political parties participated. The conference was followed by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani's key visit to Islamabad.

Ghani met Prime Minister Imran Khan and government officials from both sides held high level talks. Efforts to arrange the Khan-Trump meeting have been underway since President Trump announced in March that he was looking forward to meeting "the new leadership in Pakistan."

The Trump-Imran meeting as well as delegation level discussions are expected to improve ties between the two countries. In the past, the Trump administration had taken hard line on Pakistan, but quite recently has been taking steps to help resolve mutual concerns.
