Pak asks Nokia not to sell 'made in India' phones

PTI[ THURSDAY, APRIL 19, 2007 05:15:50 PM]
ISLAMABAD: Stretching its reservations on imports from India to multinational companies, Pakistan is understood to have informed mobile handset maker Nokia not to sell phones made in India in the Islamic nation.

The reservations of Pakistan in receiving such mobile phones apparently were conveyed to Nokia through authorised cell phone distributors, who have asked the company not to ship Indian made handsets into Pakistan on the ground that consumers may not like it.

The company, which has a facility near Chennai in south India, has accepted the distributors' plea, Dawn reported.

Nokia India started exporting mobile handsets from its plant at Sriperumbudur, 50 km west of Chennai, from the middle of last year. Due to the availability of cheaper raw material in India, there is a possibility that the Indian-made mobile phones may be slightly cheaper compared to cell phones produced by the company in Germany, Hungary and China.

Director United Mobile Ejaz Hassan told Dawn on Wednesday that Nokia had asked the Pakistani distributors over the possibility of making shipments from India two months back.

"The three to four authorised distributors of Nokia in Pakistan have offered their regrets to Nokia as they think that consumers will give a cold response to the Indian product," he said, adding that the company has accepted the request.

The government had not allowed the entry of Indian made mobile phone sets in Pakistan and it may not allow the same in future, the newspaper said as Pakistan traded with India through a positive and negative list. And the mobile phones are currently on the negative list.

How can a company sell something which customers do not want?

Chinese aviod to buy Japanese goods, French hate English goods, as wel germans, why shold nokia think adopting such stupid marketing approach.

Bullseye! You just hit the nail on the head.

How can a company sell something which customers do not want?

If pakistani people are okay with Indian movies, what is wrong with buying Indian manufactured phones?
And who said Chines dont buy anything Japanese? How many Sony goods do you find which are not made in China?
Chinese are ready to manufacture the goods for a company from the nation they hate, but wont buy it?

There is nothing wrong it, India can say No to what it doesnt want, so can Pakistan

Well India once cancel the Chinese construction company bid for Indian airport. And was winner. First India let em inn, then they kick them out. So, its common practice in business. Chinese cell phone company this year enter in market and took over PAKTEL phone company with 1.38 million customer. Obviously they would like to import cellphones from China and earn more money, rather they let India Nokia to share the market potential.

Go and convince customers if you can not read the news above!

Right.
In China, Sony consumption products are mostly localized, like Camera, TV and portable Video Camera, while professional facilities are inducted from Japan like M7 television camera in broadcast quality.

Chinese are ready to manufacture the goods for a company from the nation they hate, but wont buy it?

Wrong.
1. manufacturers and consumers are 2 different concepts.

2. Not all Chinese people reject Japanese brands (including licensed products and joint productions under Japanese Label),some Chinese like them very much in fondness of finer craftwork and nicer style, and they're not to blame.

Under the current technical situation, it is difficult to achieve absolute boycott againt Japanese productions, despite a number of Japanese products have been losing pore-overs,or getting conered by surpassing Chinese alternatives.

3. when there are indigenous alternatives at same leve, most people will choose Chinese products for lower price and handy service.

4. Boycott isn't more powerful than getting your own products comparable or even superior.

I play badminton every week, and Yonex is my favorite.
I like a bit photography and Canon or Nikon are of the best. what else non Japanese? Kodak is fading out, and a made-in-Germany I can't recall the label.

But except the two above, I got all, with or without trend, non-Japanese.

Wrong, Here its not the consumer who took the decision whether to buy or not. Here the mobile phones were prevented from getting into hands of consumer.
Consumer is intelligent enough to decide which one to buy and whcich ones not to buy.

Thats because Pakistan govt has banned Indian films, there is no choice but to watch pirated copies which are most of the time of low quality.

I went in to detials and fact is that Nokia in India is profucing 5 modles and that too with a bit low quality, while Nokia China is producing 55 models and quality is much batter, but still China made Nokia is not that popular, people demand Japan or German Nokia.

On the other hand Cell Phones are in "negative" list of imports and exports between India and Pakistan.

If some body got further details please add.
