A special penal court in Riyadh on Saturday absolved two defendants accused in a terrorism case of five charges but were sentenced to a total of 11 years in prison after they were found guilty of four less serious charges.
The public prosecutor had demanded the death penalty against the pair, but the presiding judge ruled that the charges proved against them did not warrant the maximum punishment.
The court was set to sentence the three defendants in the case at Saturdays session. But the second defendant did not appear at the hearing and the judge decided to sentence him in absentia at another session.
The three-judge judicial panel found the first and third defendants not guilty of charges that included joining a terrorist cell, engaging in terrorist operations and embracing the Takfiri ideology.
The first defendant was also acquitted of sedition and money laundering due to lack of evidence.
In 2004, the court sentenced the first and third defendants to five and six years in prison respectively. The first defendant was found guilty of aiding and abetting a wanted person, providing him with shelter and smuggling him outside Rafha governorate.
The third defendant concealed information from the authorities about the whereabouts of a group of wanted persons. He took SR5,000 from one of them after he promised he would join the group.
