You are right. Also a subsonic C-130 is an easy target for AAs and SAMs and could also be tackled easily by enemy aircrafts. Thus it was decided in favour of fighter/bombers.

The C-130 is a good transporter, extremely rugged. But unfortunately for any kind of aerial warfare, it's a lumbering elephant.

They could have become Pakistan's first Nuclear delivery platform too, if things have gone really wrong during 80s and 90s.

It won't be possible for the C-130 to do such a mission. Not enough speed and agility to exist. The plane and the pilot won't go back.

ISLAMABAD: The Indo-Pakistan War of 1965 saw the Indian and Pakistani Air Forces (PAF) engaged in large-scale aerial combat against each other for the first time since the independence of Pakistan and PAF also used its C-130 fleet as a bomber aircraft for air missions.

Initially the fighting was confined mainly to the ground but later, as the war progressed, the war took on another dimension as the two sides began air operations against each other.

The C-130 aircraft played an important role in the 1965 war and destroyed 17 Indian fighter jets and damaged 16 others during the air missions.

According to a documentary aired by a news channel, the then Air Marshal Nur Khan of Pakistan Air Force led the operation and also flew his aircraft.

The C-130 aircrafts after necessary modifications were used to give a befitting response to India.

The Air Marshal had also set an example by personally taking part in several air missions that kept the morale of the Air Force officers at an exceptionally higher level.

Air Marshal (R) Sardar Muhammad Asif said that C-130 aircrafts were used to destroy war related important locations inside India.

Recalling the history he said, “We were directed by the Air headquarter to target important bridge in India and the task was achieved without any trouble.”

Remembering another mission, he said that special guns were installed at the ramp of C-130 aircraft for Gilgit air mission to target the Indian aircraft.

Air Commodore Abdul Basit said Pakistan Air Force in 1965 war attacked the enemy in day and night missions without any problem.

The spirit of the whole nation during the war was remarkable, he said adding, the nation was united and the spirit of 1965 war still alive to deal with enemy’s aggression.

Sharing some moments, he said, the villagers were supplying food to the Pakistan troops and even the shopkeepers were not taking money and providing required commodities to the Jawans. –APP

I had read that also----and what does this tell us----even in the 60's we needed heavies to do some of the job----.

Now with the changing technologies----we need heavies with smart strike technology and smart weapons----.

hey what do you mean by heavies today. C-130 were good in 1965 but not anymore. Now radars and SAM are much more sophisticated.

We managed to do that with C-130s because PAF had gain air superiority and there were not many fighters in the air to bring C-130s down. Now, if we think of using dedicated bombers, we first need to achieve a decisive air superiority that seems unlikely due to multi layered air defenses plus large number of air superiority fighters available to the IAF. I maybe wrong but only practical solution appears to be cruise missiles to take down enemy's air defenses and cripple her capability of sending fighters into the air. I feel Pakistan should pay most attention on the development of surface, air, and sea-launched long range terrain hugging cruise missiles.

As I have shared that we need heavies with smart technology-----.

Arabian seas and indian ocean provides equal opportunity to both sides----. There is no place they can put their LR missiles----and strike aircraft can make a launch from around 150 KM to 300 KM away at the target---.

The multi layered defense does not come into play over the ocean.

What that also means is that it makes the enemy naval flotilla vulnerable to our strike force---. But the key factor here is an aircraft that has a long loiter time-----

By fitting an AA gun on the ramp of the C-130 in 1965 and using it with success during the war, PAF may have given US a brainwave to come up with its own Hercules gunship by converting their JC-130A, serial 54-1626, into AC-130A, the first prototype. That's 2 years *after* PAF's improvised flying AA gunship. :-)

Same like Pakistan Navy Soldiers did use 12.7mm AA Gun to hit indian missiles in 1971 war, US did US did developed the Phalnax !
