ISLAMABAD: The Indo-Pakistan War of 1965 saw the Indian and Pakistani Air Forces (PAF) engaged in large-scale aerial combat against each other for the first time since the independence of Pakistan and PAF also used its C-130 fleet as a bomber aircraft for air missions.

Initially the fighting was confined mainly to the ground but later, as the war progressed, the war took on another dimension as the two sides began air operations against each other.

The C-130 aircraft played an important role in the 1965 war and destroyed 17 Indian fighter jets and damaged 16 others during the air missions.

According to a documentary aired by a news channel, the then Air Marshal Nur Khan of Pakistan Air Force led the operation and also flew his aircraft.

The C-130 aircrafts after necessary modifications were used to give a befitting response to India.

The Air Marshal had also set an example by personally taking part in several air missions that kept the morale of the Air Force officers at an exceptionally higher level.

Air Marshal (R) Sardar Muhammad Asif said that C-130 aircrafts were used to destroy war related important locations inside India.

Recalling the history he said, “We were directed by the Air headquarter to target important bridge in India and the task was achieved without any trouble.”

Remembering another mission, he said that special guns were installed at the ramp of C-130 aircraft for Gilgit air mission to target the Indian aircraft.

Air Commodore Abdul Basit said Pakistan Air Force in 1965 war attacked the enemy in day and night missions without any problem.

The spirit of the whole nation during the war was remarkable, he said adding, the nation was united and the spirit of 1965 war still alive to deal with enemy’s aggression.

Sharing some moments, he said, the villagers were supplying food to the Pakistan troops and even the shopkeepers were not taking money and providing required commodities to the Jawans. –APP

. . . .
Yup, Pakistan Air Force is quiet good with doing modifications like that. 8-)

. . .
Just a thought - Have PAF preserved one aircraft as a memorial?

What a great thing...such a peaceful bombings on the nation which called its first nuke explosion a smiling budha to insult budha. But I mean what a lovely seen would that be, blessing descending upon coward indians in the middle of night for starting a war in the middle of night and all their tanks destroyed in quite a short time. I love that :) :)

They could have become Pakistan's first Nuclear delivery platform too, if things have gone really wrong during 80s and 90s.

A selam Brother how are you ?

I have question about this, it sounds interesting:"Remembering another mission, he said that special guns were installed at the ramp of C-130 aircraft for Gilgit air mission to target the Indian aircraft." Which gun could be that ? Was this more a defence measure for air defence or to attack ground targets ?

I think It could have been a twin 37mm Type-79 AA Gun

Walikum As Salam,

Alhumdullilah I'm good. PAF has a long history of creativity, nonetheless, To be honest I don't know which mission he is referring too.

@Windjammer @MastanKhan @araz @Pakistanisage @Oscar might be better able to help you.

Mirages and F-16s, were actually readied to be used for nuke dropping with an innovative and quick solution to encase the nuke in external fuel tank like shell. Pakistan was surprisingly quick in not only achieving the nuclear capability but also to design a light weight deliverable device while india was still hugging its 4-tonne crude, inefficient and undeliverable test device.

As soon as we got the F-16's PAF started practicing a technique called "bomb toss." Which they perfected pretty soon.

I could be wrong, but I don't see the Hercs fitting into that role. After all once you deliver a nuke, you need to exit the target area ASAP as well. It's not just about delivery.

You are right. Also a subsonic C-130 is an easy target for AAs and SAMs and could also be tackled easily by enemy aircrafts. Thus it was decided in favour of fighter/bombers.
