Osama bin Laden 'living in luxury in Iran'

Osama bin Laden, the world's most wanted man, is living in the lap of luxury in an apartment in Iran and spends his time falconing, according to a new documentary.

Published: 7:07AM BST 05 May 2010

Far from huddling in a cave in Afghanistan fearing for his life, the al-Qaeda leader has been enjoying the protection of Iran's Revolutionary Guard with his wife and children since 2003, the film Feathered Cocaine asserts.

The documentary features Alan Parrot, one of the world's foremost falconers, who claims that bin Laden, an avid falcon hunter, has been taking part in the sport relatively freely in Teheran, Fox News reports.

Mr Parrot, who was once the chief falconer for the Shah of Iran and who has worked for the royal families of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, used his contacts in Iran to talk about bin Laden's life there.

He took two Icelandic filmmakers, Om Marino Arnarson and Thorkell S. Hardarson, into the secretive world of falconers where some birds can sell for over $1 million, and in which the elite of the Middle East conduct business and politics in remote desert camps.

One contact, said to be a warlord from the country's north, claims to have met bin Laden on hunting trips six times since 2003.

He said that the terrorist leader was calm, healthy and so comfortable that "he travels with only four bodyguards."

Mr Parrot told Fox News that the warlord, who supplies the falcon camps bin Laden visits on hunting forays, agreed to talk only because one of Mr Parrot's men had saved his life.

"This was the repayment," Mr Parrot said. "He was asked to talk. He wasn't happy about it."

The last confirmed meeting between bin Laden and the warlord was in 2008, Mr Parrot said.

"There may have been more since then, but I haven't talked to my source since we left Iran," he said.

Parrot's story is supported in the documentary by former CIA agent Robert Baer, an outspoken critic of US policy in the Middle East on whom the film Syriana is based.

Ahmadinejad's response

Osama bin Laden: is he alive and well in Washington DC?

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad advances a novel theory that Osama bin Laden has found the perfect hiding place: Washington DC

The US and other countries have spent much time and effort hunting down Osama bin Laden, to no avail. Maybe it's time to be thinking outside the box – and when it comes to thinking outside the box, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the president of Iran, has few peers.

Ahmadinejad sat down with ABC's George Stephanopoulos for an interview yesterday. In a wide-ranging and at times surreal exchange, Stephanopoulos asked the Iranian president about reports that bin Laden was secretly living in Tehran. Some less-than-Pulitzer Prize-winning dialogue followed. "Your question is laughable," was Ahmadinejad's initial response. Sadly, things went downhill from there, as you can see from the transcript:

Stephanopoulos: If you did know that Osama bin Laden was in Tehran, would you show him hospitality? Would you expel him? Would you arrest him?

Ahmadinejad: I heard that Osama bin Laden is in Washington DC.

Stephanopoulos: No, you didn't.

Ahmadinejad: Yes, I did. He's there. Because he was a previous partner of Mr Bush. They were colleagues in fact in the old days. You know that. They were in the oil business together. They worked together. Mr bin Laden never cooperated with Iran but he cooperated with Mr Bush.

Later:

Stephanopoulos: But you deny categorically that he's in Tehran today? He is not, Osama bin Laden is not in Tehran today?

Ahmadinejad: Rest assured that he's in Washington. I think there's a high chance he's there.

Stephanopoulos: I don't agree. Thank you for your time, Mr President.

You're probably thinking: that's just plain nuts. And you'd be right. But think about it. Washington DC by its nature, with all its embassies and organisations such as the IMF, is the ideal place for a wealthy outsider to blend into. Plus, there's some nice museums and Osama could indulge his interest in foreign policy. (Although he would probably live in Bethesda, where half of the World Bank resides, and technically that's Maryland but let's not quibble.)

But Ahmadinejad can't be right. If Bin Laden really lived in DC he would have gone to the White House correspondents dinner on Saturday, along with other celebrities such as Justin Bieber. After all, Rupert Murdoch was there.

Okay, this is seriously the worst piece of sensational journalism I have ever seen. While Iran's government is known for its sabre-rattling at the drop of a hat, even I am shocked at such a pathetic piece of article. The journalist here could have done a little research before writing such nonsense. Considering the fact that Iranian clerical regime is the mortal enemy of Taliban and that Bin Laden helped setup links between Taliban and Al Qaeda, if this news were to be believed Iranians would have themselves finished the man off.

It is extremely sad that such articles make a mockery of the Western military intelligence and therefore downgrade the quality of genuine news reports as well.

You missed the bit about warlords in the north of Iran (Yes, now Iran has warlords apparently). Had they said towards the east of Iran I could have imagined them to be the armed smugglers that operate on the Iran-Pakistan border who have been exaggerated to become "warlords", but he said the North, by far the most peaceful and crime-free portions-- i.e warlords in Gilan and Mazandaran. This is simply hilarious! If you had visited those parts, you would find it even more hilarious!

lol, no one can compare to the Communists when it comes to propaganda. They perfected it to an art form. now they sub-contract much of it out to the 50 cent party. Though I'm sure you have no idea what I am talking about do you. ;)

The propaganda techmique of the communists is crude compared to the propaganda technique of Washington politicians. Matter of fact, the so-called champions of democracy and human rights have perfected the technique of propaganda. Remember how the world was told that Saddam was about to nuke Washington and London! Remember how the actual investigation of the 9/11 was derailed! Remember how the Israeli nukes are kept out of the media focus!
