Ordnance factory introduces indigenous version of 155mm gun

ANGAREDDY(AP): Indian armed forces will use in 3 months an indigenous version of the 155mm calibre Bofors guns "which are more advanced than Bofors", All India Ordnance Factories Board's (OFB) Director General and Chairman Sudhir Kumar Beri said.

Speaking to reporters at the ordnance factory at Yeddumailaram in Medak district today afternoon, he claimed it is "the biggest ever achievement of Indian ordnance factories to have manufactured an indigenous 155 mm calibre gun for the country's defence needs". Generally, it takes 60 months to develop and manufacture such guns but Indian ordnance factories did it in merely 16 months, he claimed.

"Earlier, we manufactured only 104 mm calibre guns in India and 155 mm calibre guns were imported from foreign companies like Bofors. But now, we manufacture in it India," he said, adding the indigenous 155mm calibre guns have been successfully tested.

Around 65 percent of the technology used in these guns is Indian and 35 percent foreign. In three months, the foreign component will be reduced to 15 percent, he said.

The manufacturing capacity of 2000 Pinaka missiles per annum will be increased to 5000 missiles per annum, he said.

He said "we have moved proposals to the central government to take over three HCL units at Hyderabad, Naini (near Allahabad) and Ramnarayanpur. The proposals are moving at a very fast pace and a decision is expected next month".

He said these three units will be taken over with all its 2200 employees and 300 acres of land at Hyderabad, 54 acres of land at Naini and 900 acres of land at Ramnarayanpur, along with infrastructural facilities. Some changes will be made and machinery will be installed as per requirement, he said.

About the bold part, I do not understand why DRDO says such things? First with Arjun and now with this Gun. I know someone in Army who was part of both Arjun trails and have seen the gun, I knew about this gun even before anything was published on paper. This is how my conversation went.

Other Guy:- DRDO has a made a 155 mm gun locally, I have seen initial trials, its OK.
Me:- Is it based on blueprints from Bofors?
Other Guy:- Yes
Me:- In that case is should be at par with it?
Other Guy:- No, it is sligtly lower but OK for us. I am happy.

Now why these guys just boast. I am fed up with DRDO's boasting claims, best in world, best in class words are so loosely used by them.

I am fed up with fools like you. First of all DRDO has nothing to do with this gun, it has been developed by OFB. Secondly, Where did you find that slightly lower tag? In Arjun? or in this gun? Share the source.

he does not know the difference between drdo and ofb. you are betting on his boasting!!!
Dude, agreed I put DRDO instead of OFB, but does not make much difference, the facts are not accurate. You know I do not post nonsense here, I do not comment on subject I do not know.

When he said slightly lower - what did he mean, did you try to find out?

He does not like to go in details, but I am guessing it is close with some minor things missing. (Based on body language and facial expression)

We in India sometimes do wonderful and amazing things like the moon mission or thorium based technology etc., but same time...some times we boast a lot.. people or the organisations. Neither I am trusting him 100% nor the OFB. With time everything will be crystal clear. We have really long way to go yet, but I am happy at least the Army will get big guns that can work.

. . .
We have been sitting on the blueprints for how many decades exactly? Why are we even boasting this? Because its "indigenous"? Well, if so congrats. We got miles to go and this clearly shows our govt has not been doing **** for all these yrs. Kargil barely woke them up. Some of you blindly suport our achievements without truly subjecting it to harsh criticism. How can we expect to get better?

Just look at how the politicans are blaming everything for rapes from rural vs Urban to Nightclubs? Are we idiots? I guess the majority are when you actually believe what the politicans say 24-7. I guess most of you are sheep. Just follow the Sheperd, he will lead you over the cliff.
