I was pulled for this check first time when I went to US (very close to 9/11). Apparently, it is not the security person to blame. On your boarding pass, they (airline staff during check in) print a code ("SSSS") "randomly". These people are then sent for extra check. Now, how airline people decide, randomly or deliberately is up to guess. My boss knew this and when he got a boarding pass with ssss code on his boarding pass, he made a big fuss and refused accept it and eventually got it changed.I was pulled out for this "random" security check as well in LA. But I hadn't shaved for like 2 months, so I get their paranoia.
Still not sure if I was "randomly" checked for being a terrorist or a drug mule
