Only Indians Were Outraged That Amazon Is Selling Doormats With National Flags Printed On Them

.
You are painting a whole nationality with too broad a brush. There are nice people and a$$-wipes in every culture....

One cannot generalize.......
Oh I wish to come to that conclusion too. I find it absurd to generalize as well but really Chinese are the most cringe worthy chunk of humanity.

I have sent a lot of time in US and most of the Chinese I came across were having same 'new-rich' behavior. The worst are the chinese nationalists. Japan also rose to economic progress and still is far better than China yet you will never find them rubbing their nationalism and show off over to anyone.

This is exactly what I meant, people of subcontinent and Chinese nationalists are a bit too much concerned with symbolism. The 'Whites' or 'West' gives a damn for what you do to symbols, so long you do not dare do any real harm to their nation or national property.
I believe it is called 'begging the respect'.

No different than most Indians, Well the relatively well off ones anyway

That has to do with post colonial mentality.. Nationalism is still looked upon with symbols but not with real achivements

But i dont agree with Amazon here, Why not just stick with Canadian flags as the retailer is essentially marketing it to Canadians, This is just disrespecting a whole another nations by not taking to account their sensitivities

Although the reaction may have been a bit over the top as well

I agree I have seen 'nouveau riche' among Indians as well, but Chinese take it to a new height. I think it is not just post colonialism but a simple realization of their own --real or perceived-- vulnerabilities.

Symbolism is one mode to keep the masses in tow, Be it nationalistic or religious, And it's not quite confined to developing nations either, I'd bet majority of Americans will take great offense to a door mat with the star's and stripes, By majority i meant small town mid America not the East and West coast, Small town America that flies the national flag with pride on every single house in every single neighbourhood

Just see how the Western civilization still market WWII, From V day to D day (Normandy landing).. It all got to do with symbolism.. Same goes with Soviet nostalgia these days

Judging by the number of US flag toilet papers, Door mats, Briefs, undergarments and what not, I believe it is nowhere the hysteria that we are seeing here.

NEW DELHI: Amazon.com (AMZN.O) removed doormats resembling the Indian tri-colour flag from its Canadian website on Wednesday, after an Indian government threat to rescind visas of the US company’s employees if they did not stop selling the product.

“Amazon must tender unconditional apology,” external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj said on Twitter. “They must withdraw all products insulting our national flag immediately.”

“If this is not done forthwith, we will not grant Indian Visa to any Amazon official,” she added. “We will also rescind the Visas issued earlier.”

The doormat, sold by a third-party on Amazon’s Canadian portal, was taken down late on Wednesday.

“The item is no longer available for sale on the site,” a spokesperson for Amazon said in an email.

Amazon’s portal in Canada sells doormats fashioned around other national flags, but under Indian law any desecration of its flag is punishable with fines and imprisonment.

Amazon’s official support account on Twitter had earlier responded to angry user comments on Twitter by saying the mats were not being sold on their Indian portal and the concerns had been escalated. Swaraj tweeted that she had asked the Indian High Commission in Canada to take up the issue with Amazon, after it was brought to her attention by a Twitter user from India’s financial capital of Mumbai.

Swaraj is a prolific user of the social media website and often responds to tweets directed at her.

Amazon is making a huge bet on India and has vowed to invest more than $5 billion as it takes on home-grown Flipkart and Snapdeal for a bigger share of the world’s fastest growing internet services market.

In an event attended by premier Narendra Modi in Washington last year, Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos said India was the company’s fastest growing region.

WASHINGTON/OTTAWA: Soon after India threatened of not granting Indian Visa to any Amazon official if the company did not withdraw an Indian flag-themed doormat from its Canadian platform, the e-commerce website removed the article from the online marketplace.

Funny!

I sometimes make fun of how China threatens visa-denial to diplomats who call on the Dalai Lama.

But visa-refusal for acting as a platform on which a flag-themed doormat is sold!? Seriously ?

Like the anthem-warriors, I have no doubt that these doormat-patriots would, if given a chance

- throw litter and cigarette butts onto the street;
- use an army- friend to obtain liquor at the army-concessional rates;
- backdate entries and inflate their tax deductions to get tax benefits;
- pay the TT on a train a bit 'extra' to skip the queue for berths;
- try to get their kids into schools and colleges outside the admission process using every contact available;
- quickly drive through a one-way or park in a no-parking zone when no one's looking;
- pay extra for doctored pollution control certificates to ply their vehicles; and
- pocket silverware from AI.

After strong protest by India over Amazon selling doormats depicting Indian flag, the e-retail giant today removed the offensive article from its Canadian website.

A spokesman for Amazon based at its headquarters in Seattle told The Washington Post that the doormat was no longer for sale on its website.

Taking strong exception to Amazon Canada selling doormats depicting Indian flag, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj yesterday asked the e-retailer to withdraw the products and tender an unconditional apology, failing which no official of Amazon will be granted Indian visa and the ones issued earlier will also be rescinded.

The minister also asked the Indian Embassy to take up the matter with Amazon Canada.
In a series of tweets, Swaraj had expressed her anger at the sale of such an offensive doormat by Amazon, which is seeking a big presence in India.

"Indian High Commission in Canada : This is unacceptable. Please take this up with Amazon at the highest level.

"Amazon must tender unconditional apology. They must withdraw all products insulting our national flag immediately.

"If this is not done forthwith, we will not grant Indian Visa to any Amazon official. We will also rescind the Visas issued earlier," Swaraj said in her tweets after she received a complaint on Twitter.

Swaraj's tweets went viral and led to an outrage on the social media by Indians and people of Indian-origin.

"Her tweet storm escalated the protest into a possible diplomatic spat," The Washington Post said.

Amazon founder and CEO Jeffrey P Bezos is also owner of The Washington Post.

Amazon Canada removed the offensive doormat from its website. However, it was selling similar doormats with US and British flags.

Wrong you wont see west caring about their flags because :
1. Some never had to fight for independence from different country, so flag means shit for them.
2. For some the independence came in 1700's or before that, 300 years is a huge time, generations have passed, immigrants came, and they care shit for something they weren't even associated.
3. Indians, Chinese, Pakistanis, Bangladesh, we all had to fight for our freedom, and its just 70 yrs or less that we got our freedom. That flag, is not just a mere piece of cloth or drawing, it symbolises the struggle, the death of our freedom fighters. Some of us grew up listening to stories from our grandfathers, how British tortured our people, so its no far in the past.
4. Talking about maturity, west was west in the early 90s, now its just a bunch of high school crap fighting about unary, binary, tertiary gender. Decades of uncontrolled immigrations, have raised a pussy generation. Your people today are more busy in discussing gender crap, black-white, Sjw's and politically correct words.
5. Immigrants have taken a huge portion in your political sphere, so much so that no body even cares about the host country as a country now. Ex : US - people come here for money, standards, living life to the fullest, so tell me why would an italian or a jew or german or Indian or australian would care about american's independence from british?

There's no doubt that India, as a nation, love outraging. On social media, in general conversations and against anything that we believe can be outrage worthy.

So, when Amazon started selling doormats with national flags of many countries printed on them, guess who got outraged? Indians.

Amazon Canada faced the wrath of Indians when it posted a bunch of doormats, with the country's national flag printed on them.

"You cannot insult a national flag of India by making a door mat of it. Delete this listing my immediately", "Dont Try to Provoke Indian Feelings By Doing and posting such Type of Stuff On ur website", "how dare u make a matt of our national flag , have some shame and remove immediately" were some of the comments left on the website.

That's not all.

A change.org petition was started, asking Amazon to remove the product from the site. The petition has already garnered support from 2,747 people. The "petition aims to start a campaign to force Amazon.ca to apologize and remove such products from their catalog."

Amazon Canada has not responded to the comments. In fact, the product, sold by Mayers Flag Doormats, is still listed on the site.

However, what is strange is, while Amazon has many of these products with different national flags printed on them, it didn't cause outrage in any country. At least, there are no comments to suggest that.

In fact, a bunch of Indians have gone and commented on Amazon India where a door mat with the US flag on it is being sold. "Please do not buy this as this is a disrespect of a country. Please boycott Amazon!" reads a comment.

A lot of Indians now want people to boycott Amazon because they are selling products with countries' flags.

It seems only Indians got outraged in all this.

Different individuals/cultures have different sensibilities, so if Indians are outraged over this whereas others are not, then that shouldn't be a problem.
