For a Pew dollars more? Urban India loves America - The Times of India

WASHINGTON: "The people of India deeply love you," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh famously -- or infamously -- told then US President George Bush in 2008. Apparently, the love affair extends to his successor Barack Obama too. Wait, strike that. India loves America, period.

A new Pew research poll has revealed that a solid 58% majority in urban India is favorably disposed toward the United States, seeing America in a more favorable light than they view other major world powers, including India's long time supporter Russia (48%) or the EU (38%). About seven-in-ten city dwellers (71%) who say they are following the US election closely want President Barack Obama to be re-elected.

Sixty per cent of respondents say they have confidence in Obama to deliver the goods. The numbers are so good for the US President that he might want to move to India, where his predecessor also had high ratings at a time he was deeply unpopular across rest of the world.

The poll does not go into why American Presidents are so popular in India but the results broadly segue into the perception that US and India have by and large overcome the Cold War baggage in the last two decades. Huge number of Indian emigrants who have bumped up Indian population in the US from less than a million in 1990 to more than 3 million in 2010, consequently creating a large pro-American sentiment in urban India, could also be a factor.

Just how much Indians are besotted with the US is even starker when compared to their view of India's immediate large neighbors. Indians feel closer to the distant United States than to neighboring China. Only 33 per cent urban Indians have a favorable view of China and the number plunges to 14 per cent when it comes to Pakistan.

The poll showed that Indians in cities are also generally supportive of the exercise of US power, both hard and soft. They broadly favor (73%) American-led efforts to fight terrorism and a plurality (48%) backs US drone strikes targeting extremists in countries such as Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia.

The survey also says most (69%) also admire US scientific and technological advances, with college-educated, urban Indians being particular fans. A majority (56%) likes American ways of doing business. A plurality of Indians in urban areas (48%) admire US ideas about democracy.

Nevertheless, indicative of a strong nationalistic and nativist ethos, roughly half (52%) think it is bad that American ideas and customs are spreading in India. A 55%-majority of Indian city dwellers dislike American music, movies and TV.

The poll also revealed that among the Asian nations where the question was asked, favorable opinion of India is highest in Japan (70%). In contrast, only 23% of Chinese see India in a favorable light, down 10 points since 2006. Only 22% of Pakistanis are favorably disposed toward India.

Pakistani appraisal of India is up eight percentage points since 2011, but down 11 points since 2006, at the height of Musharraf's rapprochement with New Delhi.

Its upto Pakistan to improve itself for the world.

Stop being the terror factory of the world.

India is lucky that it has no boarder with Afghanistan else what would have India done (just imagine if It was India not Pakistan on Afghanistan western boarder) and if USSR would have invaded it and US wanted you to help them in a proxy war?

WE would have told US to find some other stooge.......but maybe the high number of refugees may take US help

actually RUSSIA wanted us to join the game. but we denied . i think your country might have joined because the millitary leaders were given lucrative promises by USA . and true , that ruined pakistan , with rise of islamic fundamentalism .

Not get involved. Just as soviet union wanted to get us involved in Afghanistan then. We said no. US asked India now to get involved. We said no.
And especially not using Islamic extremism to fuel the insurgency..maybe nationalism or tribalism or ethnicity. It has ruined your nation

People should learn from mistakes, but you guys are not ready for it. You know what happened to you after fighting against USSR in afganistan, but still you are ready fight aginst US in Afganistan. You know, sowing hatered and supporting terrorism comes back to bit the hands who support them, but still you keep supporting them in Kashmir. So it is not luck, but the bad karma, which keeps bogging you. So dont try to hide behind luck and do right karma to get results.

You are wrong.. pray tell me did US send their biggest super carrier when they asked pakistan to help her in WoT ?? NOO
( remember '71 when US sent their largest (7th fleet) to Bay of Bengal and Indira saw them through)
It was musharraf who thought that an affirmation to US overtures in South Asia could help her with the nefarious objectives against INDIA.. it just boomerang.. now musharraf seems to be coming back with his own political party and he proudly comes on TV and says he has done a lot for pakistan and people buy that shi!t also
