What's new

Olive plantation Pakistan. Farmers support the cause.

.
Is the north west most suited for olive. And I would imagine Olive farmng offers huge profit margins with even greater export potential. So why has the uptake been slow. Would market forces not encourage this?
2 areas have olives and the perfect weather for them;

Upper Panjab/Potohar region (where govt js giving free olive plants to farmers)

Balochistan (specifically Zhob-Quetta belt) where ive seen wild olive trees in mountainous otherwise barren land.

.
can you take cuttings and grow them from ground instead seeding. There are diff variety aswell.

.
We also have prefect environment for cultivation of Moringa as well, but as usual we are late lateef in every field.

.
3-5 years wait? Then potohar is best region because there isn't much agricultural land where wheat is grown. There is also large areas in thal and bahawalpur but not sure how much water is needed for olive plants. There is so much potential, no doubt.

Anyway I would advice punjab government to extend free olive plantantion drive, it can convert pothwar in to oil food basket of Pakistan like central punjab is for wheat.
Olive trees hardly need water which is why they are perfectly suited to semi-arid weather. They can take up to -12c down and frost; similar to where i am. Like i said, if you have wild olives growing, then there is no issue with planting mission cultivars or even kalamata.

Read the document i have attached, it is the full blown guide to growing olives and what to do thereafter.

We get a lot of help here from our kooperasie; it is a massive private cooperative which conducts training in conjunction with local university dept of agriculture and is the depot for all farmers in this region for anything ranging from baling wire to seeds to instructions etc. Once one gets going, help extends to the next neighbour.

I tried olives just out of interest, there are various regions specifically growing olives in commercial category. Remember with olive oil, there are so many different uses - first cold press becomes good to eat; then the second grade is good for eating, soaps etc. Now, Pomace is the one which is what I donot recommend, they use solvents to extract every bit of oil from the residue pulp; those of you buying there, just check it will state it as Pomace. That is what is being sold across most third world; stay away from it and in EU you cannot even sell it; there are doubts on whether it is carcinogenic e.g. solvent. However no issue if used in soaps etc.

Not just oils, you can preserve olives; that is what i do here and distribute it; i have started to get first harvests only this year; once they mature then i will work on the pit extractor machine.

.
but how will small farmer survive without any income for 4-5 years? and are you planning expand your olive plantation? and where did you sell your harvest? why not look into small extractor low cost but high yeilding? you can promote olive farming in your area buy produce from farms and make oil and sell with your brand i know esier esier said then done but i am 100% sure youll make crazy money! but ull need to invest in marketing.
Olives are a long term investment; first you get folks to plant it. if you have a person who can process everyone's olives and create a brand and marketing then you are all set. This includes localisation of names too. Each region will have specific taste to the oil.

A good first pressed oil just 1 litre will cost you a bit overseas.

Project cost of Rs2 billion, to plant 2 million plants in 15,000 acres till 2020. I think after 2020 people will start to see benefits and then we can expect much larger land being under olive cultivation.

Yes the research has been done and farms are more successful than any other region in the world. The experimental farms gave great harvest. It is a success story and help take burden of economy. Olive oil import can fall with in 3 years. Plus olive oil price will be reduced and will also decrease Palm oil import. They are the 2 major burdens on our economy.

Interesting they advertise peaches as well.

This region we grow a lot of peaches as well. One of the favourite and high valued commodities we do, is mampoer. It is the post fermented distillation. I personally dont do it but my neck of woods is known for it. For a 1/2 litre it will cost around 10$ - 120% proof.
