Oil found in two old gas fields

isn't oil always found deep beneath gas?....i read it somewhere, i maybe wrong.

Yes, oil may lie beneath the gas fields. But, sometimes, there are gas fields without a trace of oil. So far, the drilling in BD has shown this trend. Only the recent finds prove otherwise. However, I believe, these finds are not exceptional. There must be other oil wells beneath deep underground with or without gas on their top.

So...will we start collecting zobba like Arabian outfits, soon we have to act like Arabian Sheikh :thinktank: !!!?

There is no way for us to become Arabian Knights. It is because of too many people in BD. On the other hand, even with a vast oil deposits, Saudi Arabia will be incapable of feeding the entire population of Bangladesh, let alone the luxurious life they are affording now. Saudi deserts cannot produce enough food to feed even 8 million people.

So, its population remained almost static at about 5 to 6 million during the last 15 centuries. Only the recent oil discovery has increased its own population. To this, migrant population was added making it a country that is supporting about 26 million people only.

Working very hard to produce industrial goodies will possibly be our fate, albeit, with full employment even if we find vast quantity of oil in BD. No way, we can survive if we keep on purchase finished goods from other countries.

I was just kidding as Lighting_Fighter quoted we are floating on oil. Regarding economy based on manufacturing I believe Mr. Mozena said the right thing...we are going to be mini China soon. Only obstacles are visionary leadership as well as disguised big friend. The latter can be treated right way if we gain the earlier.

We have huge amount of coal deposit that we are not extracting any, we have gas but the government does not reveal how much of it we have and then there is some oil. Is there something else that the government is not revealing to the public?

I wonder was it somehow dreamed by Sheikh Mujib :undecided: ? If so, we can name the wells like Bangabandhu Toilo Kup 1, Bangabandhu Toilo Kup 2 and so on  . Does anyone have any idea over this possible invaluable dream !!!?

Sylehits should stop providing gas and oil to Bangladesh unless Coal reserves are not made available for the consumption. Petty vote politics should stop here and evict those people who are sitting on top of those coal mines. Gas should be reserved for only exclusive industrial use not for power production.

Sylhetis can never do that. The central government in Bangladesh has all the power, divisions hold actually no political influence or power. In canada the richest province is Alberta with lots of oil, the federal government wanted to nationalize the oil; but the province protested and the provincial government did not let it happen. Another problem we have is that our energy is nationalized; we need to privatize these institutions starting with our energy, water, telephone. Getting anything done in Bangladesh is near to impossible; too much bureaucracy and corruption. Too much damn regulations in this country. People running Petrobangla make a lot of money through corruption, thus the government will never let it get go private.

Yes, our coal deposits are around 2,500 million ton. Its energy value is equivalent to about 90 trillion cft of natural gas. In comparison, BD has so far found only about 13 trillion cft of gas. This shows how big is our coal resource! As far as I know, only one of the mines somewhere in Dinajpur is producing coal in a very inefficient way, and this coal is used to produce electricity in a nearby power plant.

Local people object to the coal mine development. It has become a political issue instigated by some India-lover chamchas in BD. One of them is Anu muhammad. They are against coal mine develoment so that BD is forced to import its needed coal from BANDHUSTAN.

A strong minded and honest political leadership is needed to go ahead with the coal mine developpment.

This rental power plant thing is the one of the major factors responsible for the sharp fall in Taka's value. We'd have to import huge amounts of fossil fuels from abroad.

It's a pity we can't exploit the coal reserves :hitwall: Did I mention potential uranium reserves? :hitwall:

Petrobangla to extract oil from 2 old fields
Staff Correspondent

Petrobangla—the Oil, Gas and Mineral Resources Corporation—has finally decided to extract oil from the country’s first two oil fields at Haripur and Kailashtila in Sylhet discovered more than two decades ago.

Petrobangla chairman Hossain Monsur at a press briefing on Sunday said production at the two oil fields would start within a year. He said the decision to go for commercial production at the Haripur and kailashtila had been taken on the basis of a recent 3 dimensional seismic survey and well-log reports that provided detailed information about the potentials of the two oil reserves.

Monsur said that the two fields would have a combined reserve of around 137 million barrels although 55 million barrels or around 7 million tonnes could be recovered from the two oil fields. Prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who is also the energy minister, instructed Petrobangla to take immediate steps to tap the oil resource so that Sylhet Gas Fields Limited, the owner of the two oil fields, could start production in one year, said Monsur.

The Petrobangla chairman earlier on Sunday morning presented to the prime minister a summery of the plan to start commercial production at the two oil fields.

Being engaged by Sylhet Gas Fields Ltd, Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration Company (BAPEX) conducted the field operation for 3D seismic survey over Kailastila and Haripur gas fields six months back.

Appreciating the BAPEX seismic team, Badrul Imam, an energy expert and teacher at geology department of Dhaka University, who was present at the press briefing, said the initiative would have been taken much earlier.

‘BAPEX and the Sylhet Gas Fields Ltd took interest in the two old oil fields which were neglected for years… We are hopeful we can become an oil producing country though the estimated reserve in the two fields are too little,’ Badrul added.

Mansur also announced that Petrobangla would also drill deeper up to 6,000 metres to explore oil in the big gas fields like Titas gas field in Brahmanbaria.

Petrobangla exploration division discovered Haripur oil field in Sylhet in 1986. The oil field was leased out to a foreign company Scimitar for producing oil. Scimitar extracted 544,100 barrel or 68,873 tonnes oil from the field between 1987 and 1994 and abandoned the oil field when they found the extraction was not profitable.

After appearing as a company under Petrobangla, BAPEX discovered another oil field at Kailashtila in Sylhet in 1989. BAPEX drilled an exploration well there and conducted successful drill stem test (DST) in the two oil-layers out of five.

Below is the Daily Star link. The recoverable quantity of oil is more than 60 million barrels. Its present market value is more than $6 billion. The new gas finds are about 3.2 trillion cft in almost the same area. Its market value is more than $1.5 billion. So, BAPEX has discovered oil and gas worth about $7.5 billion.

Since these finds are ONSHORE, therefore, by law, BD will not export any of these finds. All of these will be used for domestic consumption by the industries, power plants and household kitchens.

3.2 trillion cubic feet of gas is actually worth over 15 billions. Add in the near 6 billion from the oil discovered and that comes to a whopping 21 billion dollars.

Just a fantasy but this money could be spent over the next 5 years building the following:

1. Padma Bridge - 3 billion
2. Deep Sea Port - 7 billion
3. 2 * 1 GW nuclear power stations = 5 billion
4. Build motorways linking largest cities = 3 billion
5. Upgrade railways infrastructure = 3 billion.

Another option- this money can be distributed equally to bal/bnp thugs over next 5 years  . Man, let our resources lie beneath the soil before we get rid of these two certified thug groups otherwise who knows all our politicians might start settling tents on all oil wells to establish their ownership  !!!
