What actually took place?

http://www.defence.pk/forums/land-forces/71013-officers-detained-dulles-2.html Sparkingways thread covers most of it.

Known Facts: General says some thing offensive to stewardess, she complains, he is arrested on arival as would happen to anyone.

US appologises, Pakistan generals have a hissy fit call of the meeting and go home.

Supposition, General makes crude remark gets arrested other 7 generals make a fuss airport security called. Generals say we are such and such you cant treat us like this, security guard says your in america now mustafa i dont care who you are. General protest ignore US apology and go home instead of aceppting everyone makes mistakes , including them and getting on with important meetings at a critical time for Pakistan.

Don't try to distort facts - Here is what happened (I think largely due to language barrirer as the Pakistani Officer must have meant i hope this is last flight in USA and i can reach my destination (CENTCOM HQ) as they might have traveled in 3-4 air planes to reach there and may have been tired.PS: There was only 1 2 Star General (Major General) in that delegation rest were non general officers.

Armymen cancel US visit over ‘mistreatment’

LAHORE: A group of Pakistan Army officers have cancelled a visit to the US CENTCOM to protest against the alleged misbehaviour they had to face at the Dallas Airport, a private TV channel reported on Tuesday.

The army delegation boarded a flight from the Dallas Airport to attend a US Defence Department meeting.

Once inside the United Airlines plane, one of the delegation members remarked that he hoped the flight proved to be their last flight and they soon reached their destiny. However, a passenger who overheard them mistook the officials for terrorists. The airport security staff was alerted, who “questioned the Pakistani delegation and misbehaved with them”.

The US Defence Department has apologised for the incident, however the delegation has decided to return home. daily times monitor

What a load of hoopla for what is effectively a very minor incident. I really don't get it, in one thread your flying american flags because of the aid they are sending and their choppers and in the very other your condeming them as the enemies of Pakistan.

Munafikat ke inthya hain hum Pakistani!

The way i felt as well, i was supprised at the reaction in the other thread of well done pakistan. Damn if Pakistan rank and file were such prmiadona's the Indians would be making gin and tonics with Siachen glacier ice.
Heck last time i did some thing silly before a flight i was up against a wall with an m16 at my head after an explanation and a sorry sir i got on with what i had to do, i didnt take my bat and ball and go home.

Military officers cancel trip after humiliation at US airport
By Anwar Iqbal

WASHINGTON: A Pakistani military delegation became the latest victim of the paranoia permeating US airports on Monday night, when US security officials detained a brigadier at Washington’s Dulles airport on a complaint by a passenger who said he did not feel safe sharing the flight with the delegation.

The brigadier was removed from the United Airlines flight, and others in this eight-member delegation were also detained after they disembarked. They were later released.

The dispute became a major diplomatic row as the delegation, offended by this treatment, decided to cancel an important meeting at the headquarters of the US Central Command in Tampa, Florida, on Tuesday, and return home.

By the time the US Department of Defence apologised to the delegation, their leader, a two-star naval officer, had already informed Islamabad where officials approved his decision to return home on Tuesday night.

The delegation included senior officials from all three services, the army, the navy and the air force.

Dawn contacted the US Transport Security Administration, whose officials had detained the brigadier, and the Department of Homeland Security but failed to get a response.

Mathew Chandler, a DHS spokesman, and Lauren Gaches of TSA, however, asked Dawn to contact the airline.

United Airlines officials, however, told the US media that the brigadier, whose name was not disclosed, had misbehaved with a stewardess and told her that “this would be her last mission”.

Information collected by Dawn showed that the incident that led to the cancellation of the meeting happened at Washington’s Dulles airport on Monday night when a passenger on the flight to Tampa complained that a Pakistani brigadier, while talking to his colleagues, had made remarks that he found threatening.

Officials of the airline informed the Transport Security Administration who detained the brigadier and later other officials as well.

A Pakistani official, when asked to comment on the airline’s claim, said: “This is a delegation of senior officials, led by a two-star officer, not unit captains and majors. Such responsible officers do not indulge in such behaviour.”

Information collected by Dawn also confirmed the Pakistani claim as the plane was delayed for 40 minutes before the airline’s mentioned the alleged altercation between the brigadier and the stewardess.

Later, an official of the airline came with a TSA security officer and asked the brigadier to disembark. She gave no reason.

The head of the delegation asked the brigadier to get down and cooperate with the TSA. The brigadier disclosed his identity.

There was no response for about 15-20 minutes and then the airline and security officials asked the entire delegation to get off the plane.

The leader of the Pakistani delegation showed TSA officials an invitation letter from the Centcom, confirming that they were going to Tampa for a meeting. He also showed them all the passports that identified the delegation as senior military officers.

He then requested to talk to a senior TSA official or the person in-charge of security at the airport but his request was turned down.

“They did not let them speak and treated them like terrorists,” said a Pakistani official. “The investigators were unprofessional, junior officials.”

The official said that the TSA and airlines officials kept telling the delegation that a passenger found the brigadier’s remarks threatening but did not say what those remarks were.

“The delegation was detained for two hours, telling them nothing, not allowing them to talk to anyone,” said the Pakistani official.

“They received no response even when they showed them their passports and the Centcom letter,” the official said.

“At the end, they realised their mistake and apologised but by then the delegation had decided it did not want to take that flight.”

Explaining why the delegation decided to cancel the meeting and return home, the official said it was basically because of the humiliating treatment by the TSA and airline staff.

“They could not prove any of the allegations. What we gathered is that one of the passengers became paranoid, so they decided to detain an official delegation. This is an issue of paranoia,” said the official who said the Pakistani forces will hold their own inquiry to determine what caused this humiliating behaviour.

In Islamabad, the Inter Services Public Relations said: “A Pakistani military delegation on a visit to US (on US invitation to attend a meeting at Centcom) was subjected to unwarranted security checks at Washington airport by US Transport Security Agency. Later, the delegation was cleared and US defence officials regretted the incident. However, as a result of these checks, military authorities in Pakistan decided to cancel the visit and call the delegation back.”

hI,

Sir,

I apologize if I come out as judgemental---which I never am---it was more like a herder---trying to guide the group together to keep focussed and cohesive in a general direction.

As for my understanding---judgemental---is someone who just passes judgements and offers no solutions or suggestions----like a critique---who always critiscizes but has no realistic answers for systematic correction.

I try my best to create a substantial base and approach for the directions taken---the effects and after affects of oppurtunities missed and lost---.

Any millitary staff or any govt employee coming from pak must be initially briefed on the etiquettes---what to say---what not to say---how to act and behave---.

In the U S----a millitary general is a nobody---even in his full blown uniform---a street cop can and will arrest him if need be, put his hands behind the the back and hand-cuff him without any fear and put him in the back seat of his patro car.

Seems like pak officers need more situational awareness understanding and training.

You have to understand the loss suffered---the pak officers were here to meet the americans officers---american millitary has no say in airport security matters---even Senator Kennedy was stopped three plus times, because his name was on the no flying list----that man had to face the air port security as well.

This incident would have caused embarrassment for theu s millitary----that was the best time to meet the american counterparts---because in their embarrassment---they might have given more than they would have otherwise---or would have agreed to more than otherwise to please the upset pak officers.

Somebody needs to teach the pak millitary to take advantage of these situation---millitary men are trained to take advantage---they are learned men who practise practise and practise to find and opening to move through---and here you have a superstar think tank member saying no no and no----has he ever heard of strategy and gamesmanship---.

And someone needs to teach young pakistanis that it is not all bad---let me ask you people---what if a visitor coming to your place is mistreated by someone in your household---don't you apologize to him---and don't you try to go out of your way to make them more comfortable.

If you don't do those things in your house level---why would you do those things at the national level

Yanks are nothing but a bunch of scared, paranoid fools and have lost all sense of reality. They cannot differentiate between who is their friend and who is thier foe and they are digging thier own graves. And the apologist for the yanks like Mastaan are the bigger fools.

Stewardess allegedly hears a threatening statement. Paranoid passenger. Do not discount race and ethnicity as having played an exacerbating factor.

I would agree with MK that Centcom could not have played any role,. TSA being paranoid they are (whether you consider it necessary or not), detained the Brig.

I'll reserve my comments on whether canceling trip was wise or not. However chest thumping arguments of "ghairat" (honour) should have no place in justifying decision. Any other wise and rational arguments are welcome.

Apparently that has kept them safe ever since 09/11 .. so maybe their paranoia is indeed paying off !

Passengers spooked when men removed from Tampa flight

Tampa, Florida -- An incident aboard a United Airlines flight to Tampa resulted in nine foreign-born people being removed from the airplane and left several passengers shaken. In fact, several thought the incident was serious enough that they asked to be booked on another flight.

At least 15 passengers who arrived in Tampa Monday on a United flight were supposed to be here Sunday night. However, the incident involving the nine men changed everything.

Photo gallery: Passengers spooked after men removed from flight
International Story: Airline incident a "dry run for terror plot?

John Luke, who was on the flight, says the nine men were seated throughout the airplane. Luke says he was told the men were of Pakistani descent and one man made a comment that apparently was "inappropriate" and made a flight attendant feel uncomfortable.

United Airlines spokesperson Megan McCarthy says at that point, the gate agent had a conversation with the men and they were asked to depart. But that's not how Luke and other passengers saw it.

Luke says the fact that the men knew each other caused concern and police came on with their hands on their guns. Then, according to Luke, the police started escorting the men off the plane.

Despite all of the security measures the TSA and the airlines have taken since 9/11, Luke says after seeing federal agents get on the airplane with guns and take the men off, he and several other passengers decided not to take any chances.

Luke says he was just using common sense and it made him feel more comfortable taking another flight.

United Airlines says it eventually became comfortable the men did not pose a threat and they were rebooked on another United flight.

While the "better safe than sorry" action is getting praise from passengers, it also is a reminder of the fact that things are still a little edgy when getting on a plane in this post 9/11 world.

I think this guy John Luke is the culprit.Caused the whole fiasco.
