Well, here it is. With OFB's weird finish and all.

Ghatak, EX too
Gosh, the concept looks nice but the reality is incredibly sub-standard. OFB's finish makes their weapons look like they are from the 70s.

And then some idiots will keep asking why the forces prefer to go for imported weapons- the reason is before your eyes.

These guys seriously need a competitor. This is the result of a unchallenged monopoly. They can do whatever they want a get away with it, it's a huge joke.

There are several private firms that want to make small arms - Bharat Forge, Punj Lloyd, etc. Make it happen. The socialist utopian idea that state own companies can do anything is over.

What's the point of MCIWS, or any other ToT from outside companies, or FMBT, or any other ToT from outside companies, if these jokers are going to make it?

Indeed and I hope this current government starts to break up this monopoly sooner rather than later. They seem to have begun doing so in specific areas so the prognosis looks good.

Exactly right, and then the DRDO will get the blame as always (just like they did with the INSAS).

What happened to that overhaul of the OFB that BAE were said to be offering? The MoD should have grabbed that with two hands and never looked back.

Isnt it hilarious they're talking about that now at a time when they see the TATAs, Mahindras, L&Ts, etc. making moves?

These guys know they're going shitted on.

They have all this reserves from getting every god damn order, now they want to spend billions to modernize their ancient facilities. Jokers. I hope TATAs, Mahindra, L&T, etc, etc. keep eating at their shares.

And I love it how DRDO skips them on several new projects.

Even this is changing- the DRDO conducted an open tender for working on different aspects of the Kestrel (engine, gearbox, chassis etc) and TATA won all of them.

A few more years and OFB are going to be well and truly out of the market.

It is typical behaviour from an entity in a monopoly position- OFB fits the definition perfectly. No innovation, poor performance and a lack of accountability.

The move to open up the market could not come fast enough.

All I worry about is that it seems the private sector giants are looking at the headline grabbing systems (Arty, tanks, ICV etc) whilst there is not a whole lot of attention (just yet) being given to small arms so whilst TATA/AL/Mahindra are eating into the OFB's vehicle business, their small arms monopoly seems to be under less challenge.

Sorry, meant to say, 'skips', them. Warms my heart.
Haha, very true! Brings a tear to the eye to see the kind of set ups L&T (especially in missiles) and TATA (in defence vehicles) have.

If the playing field is perfectly level the ingredients are all there for Indian defence GIANTS to emerge- a MASSIVE domestic market that is looking to spend a vast amount on modernisation over the next decade or so and these companies (TATA, L&T and Mahindra) are cash rich with enormous resources outside of the defence industry to tap into if/when required.

Allowing the private sector in seems so bloody obvious but it has taken this long for any real traction to be made.

I am of the opinion that if it looks stupid... but works... it ain't Stupid.
.
DRDO has worked well in sections where we had technology restrictions and has Fcuked every project that has had foreign vendor available. No one needs to be genius to connect the dots. welcome. :)

A classic case of being unable to distinguish between DRDO and the production agency (in this case OFB). DRDO produces very little in house, they are a R&D organisation but all too often are blamed for the incompetence of those they outsource production to (OFB and on occasion HAL).

Was citing DRDO as an example. The line which deleted out of quote had supported the "lack of finishing" part. If it works and can be used by Forces... its good.

One the best 105mm field guns were made by OFB. So I seriously doubt *if there competence is an issue here. OFB needs a Tech overhaul to incorporate modern manufacturing techniques, and INSAS was the first AR that was made by OFB with 5.56 mm NATO rounds. *with no user over sight, which this time isn't happening with Excalibur , User will be there from testing to production. learning curve.
