Obama thinking of moving the 7th fleet to Bangladesh.

If Bd is not the center of Universe it is becoming the center of developing Asia. The gravity of its location has made it dear to big powers. How about also the Suppa Pawa India, is it not revolving around BD already?

Sure

Whatever makes ppl happy.

Forget about BD becoming the center of asia. One Indian poster (not you?) uploaded one think tank link that said about the Chinese naval bases in Burma near Andaman, and Indian upgraded naval base in Visakhapattam (not sure of the place).

USA policy does not allow the presence of two contending navies in a sea without its own presence there. So, the USA is asking BD to provide a kind of berthing facility probably in the Saint Martin island. This island is located about 40 km away from the Teknaf tip of BD as if it is inside Burmese sea.

However, I have a great proposition to the USA. Take lease of the ideally placed South Talpatti island from BD, enlarge it with quick hardening concrete, and build your fortified observer post there.

@Hyperion Had we agreed to this demand [it exists since the 50s] of America in the 60s, Pakistan would still be one. I wonder what Bangladesh is going to do.
@Aeronaut...wots with the flag change.....bored?

Sorry for the off topic discussion, but Pakistan would have remained undivided only with the democracy that we have observed only yesterday in (west) Pakistan. It was absent in the 1971 Pakistan. Any election result is not a final verdict of the population. It changes in every election.

But, Yahya and Bhutto thought 1971 election was the final verdict. Only after 6 months of rule AL govt would have been as unpopular in east Pakistan as any other party.

One con would be that we would be under some kind of hegemony, not that we already aren't. A strong US presence is the way out of Indian Hegemony, you have no idea how much this nation is under silent Indian occupation. Indian dada giri will be gone..............Chinese investments will also increase. Awami league literally sold bangladesh to India to remain in power.

Even though an US presence would be loathed by Bangladeshis I won't mind IF they promise to stay out of interfering in our national election and politics. An american presence would keep us protected from Indo-awami loons while we strive to develop. An US presence would definitely nullify Indian nose-poking forever in BD and yes chinese investment wouldn't falter but their military sales will cease to exist. I would have loved a chinese naval presence in chittagong but they are not capable of that before 2030 at least. At the end of the day we have to align ourselves to either china or US in the long term IF we want to remain free from Indian hegemony and protect our sovereignty.

And yes we are a defacto province of India now. :hitwall::cry:

South Talpatti Island is a sand-bank made entirely of river silt. What will this "fortified observer post made of quick hardening cement" stand on? On shifting sands??!!

Then it will suffer the same fate as the famous Rana Plaza ! Is that what you are looking for? :what:

Whoever wrote this trash needs to do some homework before spewing nonsense. Does he even know the type of infrastructure required for berthing the 7th Fleet? Even if the process starts today, it would take close to a decade to get it operational.

The port should be capable of berthing several large ships alongside as well as other smaller vessels and harbor craft and include several fuelling piers, anchorages and mooring buoys.

Then there is the requirement for major hull and repair works in a large ship yard which needs to be located within the base. The base also needs to provide berthing support facilities, fuel facilities and warehouses for the fleet stationed there.

Then the base should offer facilities such as accommodation, American schools, banks, restaurants, gymnasiums and fitness centers, play fields, swimming pool, sailing center, library and so on! Yep! The Yanks can't do without all these 'support' facilities! :smokin:

And needless to say, the acreage required for all this stuff is mind boggling!
