Number of foreign students in US hits record high

The number of foreign exchange students studying at US colleges and universities is at a record high, with nearly one-third coming from China.

A report by the Institute of International Education, in partnership with the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, said nearly 900,000 international students were studying in the US during the 2013-14 school year, up 8 percent from a year earlier.

During the same period, there was a nearly 17 per cent increase in the number of Chinese students.

The other top countries of origin were India, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Canada.

The United States hosts more of the world’s 4.5 million globally mobile higher education students than any other country, but just a little more than 4 percent of all undergraduate and graduate students are international students.

A burgeoning middle class combined with a view that America has quality colleges and universities are factors cited to be pushing the demand from China. Kuwait, Brazil and Saudi Arabia were also among the countries that have seen double-digit gains in the percentage of students coming to the United States to study, and government-funded scholarships have likely contributed to the growth.

In addition to contributing billions to the US economy, study-abroad programs strengthen ties “necessary to solve global challenges,” Evan Ryan, a State Department official, told reporters.

A record number of Americans are studying abroad, although their stints overseas tend to be shorter and there are far fewer American students who participate in such study programs than foreign students who come to the US.

About 289,400 US students studied abroad for academic credit in 2012-13, the most recent year data was available. There was 2 percent growth from a year earlier. Overall, less than 10 per cent of American students study abroad during their college years.

The United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, France and China were the leading destinations.

US has best universities, so no surprises.

Not really, and trust me, once you are there, you find out that apart from some top private/public institutes, the rest are as good as any other university in a developed world.

.
It is good. We should take the knowledge and the system they have which is successful worldwide. There is a lot we can learn from the United States. They have built a nation that is united and strong. Instead we focus on how long the other Muslims shalwar is.

Then what explains so many going to US? My brother went this year too.

I went there and so did my brother. Ironically, i then went to UK, and my brother after working for a year in USA is working in UK. LOL.

People think that US is best, it is not. There are opportunities and then there are drawbacks. It appears fine from the outside, but it may not be the case once you are there.

Which is better...US or UK. I am planning to go to either of those country next year, once I complete my graduation here in India

As per our law makers, everything in Pakistan is perfectly fine and as per the latest global trends.

Countries send delegates to different countries to see how they work in any specific field and then come back and discuss and analyze all of them and formulate the best possible way to implement them locally for the better of the nation and the citizens.

Pakistan sends delegates to different countries and they do and are doing a great job in learning and analyzing and implementing new ideas. No wonder we are one of the beacons for education in the world, more higher and better than that we had been in 50s and 60s

Again, both are good.
Depends on universities that you are applying to and the offers you get. I'll be more than happy to help then.

In UK there are 20 or so major universities that get majority of the research funding. They are called the Russell Group. If you can get into any of them, it is good. Otherwise don't go. In America, there are host of private universities and some public unis. So it all depends.

US is much bigger and as such the economic opportunities are in abundance in all sectors : Engineering, Law, Medicine, Finance. UK is more like services, they don't make anything anymore, so engineering has taken a hit.

If you are going abroad and spending that $$$, make sure it is a top ranked uni. Otherwise study in India (for bachelors and go for masters abroad)

BTW, Germany/Switzerland have some excellent unis as well, and they have very low tuition rates.

If you are extremely rich and would run your daddy's business upon return, then you can go wherever you want, party hard and enjoy all that west has to offer :P

Also to be added is the opportunities available after education!....ultimately it comes down to ROI!

Not really. Trust me when i say this. Pick a specialized field in IT..say for eg Business side of Capital Markets, with IT(Development ) the supply here is at least 40 Percent less than the demand...I dont have links to prove it though..I am only going by what I do for a living....and yes the demand is way too high in comparison to supply...I am sure its the same with Health sciences as well.

What is your MS going to be in, and demand for skillful, creative programmers will ALWAYS be there. If you are an average programmer, then don't expect much.

There is demand for specialist skills and it depends on ultimately how good you are.
There is always massive demand for good doctors, because people will always have health issues.
Ever heard of an 'unemployed' Plumber/Mechanic/Electrician/Welder etc?

A skillful welder/driller in oil industry makes more than an Engineering graduate.

This. This so many times.

Desis place a negative stigma on blue collar workers.

When in fact they are:
a) more prosperous in the West
and b) I have found electricians here to be better than many electrical engineering grads that come to Australia.
