My great grand grandfather was a Croatian soldier in Austro-Hungarian army fought on the Eastern Front against Russian Empire.
It was such times when Slavic soldiers in AU army were practically rushed to the great Slavic brothers to escape prison of nations called Austro-Hungary. Hundreds of thousands Slavs deserted and avoid mobilization into AU army. They left to Russia, Serbia, France, Britain, etc. For every smart individual it looks like Central Powers lost a war before a single bullet has fired.
When it comes to my great great grandfather he was wounded just a couple of months before Russia sign peace with Central powers, he was wounded in the back and left foot, one Russian soldier give him russian uniform and transport him in the russian hospital. It was a shrapnel wound in his back and not so problematic wound at the left foot, he expected worse scenario.
He get recovered after few weeks, he looked for his saviour but he never saw him again and only thing he remembers about his saviour was his name - Igor ( Игор). He got transfered to Serbian kingdom consulate in Buchurest and after war ends, he go back to newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Slovenians and Croats.
50 years after that fascinanting journey my grandmom give a birth to a son, my father - and give him a name Igor ( Игор).
Not sure that guy was a Trockist who saved an enemy soldier becouse of anti war campaign of communists or simply a Russian guy with soft russian soul, I dont give a damn, that story defines my family history (both Serbian and Croatian) and always give me a hope to help a foreigner in a need, thats why I never badmouth these poor people that enter Europe. And of course it teach me to love Russia even more everytime I told someone that family story.
Never again WWI. Never again WWII. Never again brothers wars.
