Ironical as it may sound, at a time when Goddess Durga is worshipped with full fervour , the annual event coming to symbolise women’s power in popular perception, there is a temple in Bihar dedicated to the deity to which women are not allowed entry during the Navaratras.

The shrine making this exclusion is Maa Aashapuri temple at Ghosrawan village, about five kilometers from the Jal Mandir, the world famous Jain shrine at Pawapuri (Giriyak block) in Nalanda district in south central Bihar and about 80 km south east of state capital, Patna.

Believed to be belonging to the Pala age, the temple is dedicated to Goddess Ashtabhuji Siddhidaatri, one among the nine images of the Durga.

The deity is known widely as Aashapuri, meaning the one who fulfils all the wishes of devotees, and is visited by thousands of devotees throughout the year. But such is its tradition that women are not allowed on the temple premises, leave alone its sanctum sanctorum, during the nine day period of Durga worship.

“We follow a purely Taantrik style of puja during Navaratra, of which women cannot be a part,” said Purendra Upadhyay, one of the priests of the temple.“It’s an old tradition and people do not want to defy it as it is believed that the violation of this rule may put a divine curse over the village and its people,” he added.

Rajeev Ranjan, a local from Ghosrawan village, said he had been witnessing this norm since his child hood days. “Women get barred from entering the temple during the festival. But I can’t say how or when this practice originated”, he said.

Only after the evening aarti of the deity on Bijoya Dashami, is the entry of women to the temple resumed for worshipping the deity and performing rituals.

It is believed that in the 9th century CE Buddhists, who followed the Vajrayana tradition, used to perform Taantrik Saadhna at this site.

“It seems this place was a full fledged study centre of Vajrayana Buddhism. Many Buddhist images have also been discovered in the village during chance findings. Some of these are even preserved at the temple and are worshipped also,” Ranjan said.

Though the temple now appears like any other modern temple and has been developed by the villagers, the Garbh Griha is quite ancient and it is believed the Goddess is being worshipped here since the 9th Century CE.

“It’s one among the 84 Siddhi Peeths of the Hindus. Even King Jayapal, one among the Pala rulers, used to visit the temple to perform puja here,” he said.

Denial of entry to women in temples has becoming a contentious issue in recent years.

In April 2016, trustees of Shani Shingnapur temple trust in Maharashtra agreed to facilitate unrestricted entry for women, including enter the sanctum sanctorum, breaking the tradition followed for several decades, following a High Court directive. The direction came after an agitation led by activist Trupti Desai.

All set for teppotsavam tomorrow; temple to be open for darshan till 11 p.m. on Vijaya Dasami
With just two days to conclude the Dasara festival celebrations atop Indrakeeladri, abode of goddess Kanaka Durga, the stage is set for ‘Teppotsavam’ on a decorated ‘Hamsavahanam’ (special boat built in the shape of the mythical Hamsa) on the River Krishna on Vijaya Dasami day on Saturday.

Sri Durga Malleswara Swamyvarla Devasthanam has made elaborate arrangements for the celestial boat ride. The temple priests adorn the goddess as ‘Rajarajeswari Devi’.

Besides the regular vedic rituals, ‘Purnahuthi’ will be performed in the temple in the afternoon on Vijaya Dasami.

Thousands of devotees are expected to swarm Prakasam Barrage and the bathing ghat to have a glimpse of the annual event. On Thursday too, several people watched the trial run from Prakasam Barrage.

The temple priests take out the Utsav Vigrahams (processional idols) of goddess Durga and Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy for ‘Nadi Viharam’ in the River Krishna, which marks end of the festivities.

The presiding deity would be decked up as Sri Mahishasura Mardhini Devi on Friday and Sri Rajarajeswari Devi on Saturday. The temple will be thrown open for darshan till 11 p.m. on Vijaya Dasami day. The teppotsavam will be organised at 4 p.m.

Deeksha relinquishment

Influx of Bhavanis, who relinquish their deeksha atop Indrakeeladri has already begun. The Bhavani devotees, after taking a holy dip in the Krishna river, made a beeline for the Kanaka Durga temple since early morning and offered special pujas to the goddess.

English rendering of the text of Prime Minister's address at Dussehra Celebrations at Madhav Das Park, Red Fort, New Delhi

Greetings to you all on the auspicious day of Vijayadashami.

Festivals in a way are the reflection of our social values and a learning for the society.

Each festival carries forward the tradition of showcasing our collective strength, to raise the sensitivity towards our social responsibilities and to keep on working tirelessly towards doing away with the social evils.

Our festivals are linked with the agriculture and harvesting, rivers and mountains, our history and our rich cultural traditions.

It has been thousands of years. But still the epics of Lord Rama, Lord Krishna have been a source of inspiration in our social milieu. They have been a source of awakening for us. After the auspicious period of Navaratri, today on Vijayadashami, we have the tradition of burning the effigy of Ravana. This is also a part of our great tradition. However, as a responsible citizen, it is our bounden duty to ward off the evil forces and the society has to keep the momentum on to raise the awareness in this regard.

Let me tell you, the festivals are not only about entertainment, there has to be purpose behind. We must take a resolve to do something positive for our country. Can one imagine that Lord Rama leaves Ayodhya putting on the clothes stitched there and with his determination and resolve creates a huge collective strength and it paves the way for the involvement of every cross section of the society enroute to his victory in Sri Lanka. Men, monkeys, nature all joined him in his drive. It must be his magical power of putting hands together which saw Lord Ramchandra harnessing the collective strength. Even after his victory, he was humble and dedicated himself for the welfare of the people.

On this Vijayadashami, let us take a pledge that we would contribute something positively for our nation in the run up to 2022, when we celebrate 75th year of our Independence. Our Sankalp should be for the Siddhi as a citizen of a proud nation so that we make our own humble and positive contribution towards the nation by 2022. Let us resolve to create the nation of the dreams of our freedom fighters. And hence, we should undertake a resolve to contribute something positive for our nation like Lord Rama.

Many many greetings to you.

Once again, heartfelt greetings on Vijayadashami.

Shree Rama is an embodiment of our culture: Vice President

Addresses Rajtilak Dussehra Day Celebrations

The Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu has said that Bhagwan Rama was an embodiment of our culture. He was addressing the gathering at the Rajtilak Dussehra Day Celebrations, here today.

The Vice President said that Bhagwan Ram was an ideal man, an ideal human being, ideal ruler, ideal father, ideal son, whatever his father has said, he has followed it, and that is why Rama is always respected, adored, admired.

The Vice President said that after independence, Mahatma Gandhi wanted Ramarajya in India. Ramarajya means an ideal rule, where there is no fear, where there is no huger, where there is no corruption, where there is no exploitation, where there is no discrimination. He further said that it is our duty at various levels and we must all work for the ideals of Ramarajya, given to the expectations of Mahatma Gandhi, and see to it that the people are given a fair rule we all concerned. That is why politicians always talk about Ramarajya, he added.

The Vice President said that Rama is our identity, our heritage. He further said that he was happy that the Nava Shri Dharmiak Leela Committee is regularly organizing Ramleela in order to remind the people about the great Rama, the great deeds he has done, the great example he has set before the country.

The Vice President said that the Dharmiak Leela Committee is regularly organizing this on regular basis where to felicitate the people to come and see the experience of the Ramleela. He further said that Vijaya Dashmi is a victory of truth over untruth, victory of fairness over unfairness, victory of satya over asatya, that is the concept of Ramleela. The demon is disturbing the human kind that is why the Ravana vadha is taken place. Keeping this in our mind all of us in our life should embody the satya, that identity set by our great people, we must stand for honesty, we must also stand for fairness. We must all work towards real Ramarajya, where there is no hunger, where there is no corruption, where there no exploitation, where there is no discrimination, on the basis of religion.

The Vice President urged upon every one that we must let the younger generation learn about Ram, Ramarajya, and take them on a fair path. Ramleela Tilak Dharan Celebration is very encouraging to everyone, and will take towards the Ramarajya, he added.

He thanked the Nava Shri Dharmiak Leela Committee for inviting me to this important event. He congratulate the committee for organizing such an important event.
