Norway to kill 2,000 reindeer to eradicate disease

Oslo (AFP) - The Norwegian government on Monday authorised the slaughter of a herd of around 2,000 reindeer in a bid to eradicate a brain-destroying disease, after several cases were detected in Norway for the first time in Europe.

In chronic-wasting disease (CWD), a cousin of mad-cow disease and already present in North America, deer brains turn spongy, causing the animal to lose weight and die.

It is contagious among deer and reindeer but not known to pass from animals to humans.

The disease was detected for the first time in Europe last year in Norway, with three known cases of reindeer infected in a single herd and two other cases among moose -- though the latter cases were considered to be of less concern since moose do not live in herds.

To prevent the spread of the disease, the Norwegian Food Safety Authority -- which oversees animal health issues -- called for the slaughter of the affected herd, which has between 2,000 and 2,200 wild reindeer living in the southwestern mountainous region of Nordfjella.

In a letter sent Monday to the authority, the agriculture ministry gave the green light "based on the knowledge we have today and the unanimous recommendations of experts."

The herd, which represents about six percent of Norway's total reindeer population, is to be eradicated by May 1, 2018, the ministry said.

The Food Safety Authority has until June 15 to present an action plan.

Possibilities being considered include rounding up the animals for slaughter, or extending hunting in the region.

@Kitten

Can I join if its a hunt? I can provide gun (I think my .243 ruger will work fine or .308 maybe), ammo and me :P ....though Norway needs to give me the airfare and overhead costs hehe.

This is for the good of the cute furry reindeer I think....no animal should have to die from mentally induced alzheimers/starvation...or worse spread it to other herds.

Sad, but necessary. If they're going to die I'd rather they not suffer through a degenerative disease. I'm not sure if any of the meat would be salvaged, but if so I might put my name in for some. Reindeer is pretty tasty.

Besides, the herd was getting kind of uppity recently. This group was spotted doing combat maneuvers during exercise Joint Viking. They might be planning something.

Foreigners are not permitted to bring firearms into the country without multiple months notice and a bunch of paperwork so it's a hassle, but you can apply for a hunting permit and lease one. This is a cull, not a hunt though, but if hunting is expanded will likely be expanded for natives only since May is outside of the normal deer hunting season which goes from August to November generally speaking.

Ha... good joke. Now pay up you cheap hoser.

What an unfortunate waste of meat.

I hope they can find a way to salvage some of it at least.

You sure .243 Ruger and .308 Winchester is enough firepower for you to kill all these reindeer? Last time we tried culling our population of Emu, we send in Soldier with .303 Lewis Machine Gun and we still loses....Don't underestimate what 2000 reindeer can do if they combine to keep up to something.

Depends how long you shoot em away from and your aim. In wooded land, I can get pretty close to whitetail here, and I go for the clean kill shot.....243 drops them good.

I guess yeah if its open land and brush, might need a bigger platform....and yeah coming to think of it caribou on average are quite larger too, but .308 should really be enough, though maybe not for effective culling (more for hunting).

Guess the Norwegians here can update us on how its to be carried out exactly.

Well, was joking with you and didn't expect a reply...

But since you do, may as well reply seriously. Not knowing much about game hunting (I only "hunt" human before and a few trip of vermin control). But I don't think 243 have the stopping power to stop game animal, or you are really close and shot them in the head, I used 223 and 243 for vermin control, shooting foxes and coyote. 308 might do the tricks for bigger game like deer and moose, but then 308 may not be flat enough to cut thru the animal.

Anyway, I am an animal lover, my wife would have killed me if I go on game hunting....Again, human is an exception :)

Why to provide airfare to someone sitting 10,000 km away:p: ...when I can reach there with my bow and arrows in 2 hours :) :azn:

Why not you join cow hunt in India?

Because bow hunting is illegal in Norway.

.308 is the minimum recommended for game like Reindeer, but realistically, most Norwegian hunters are packing a .338 rifle which is also suited for hunting Seal and unfortunately, Moose.

Over-under shotguns are also commonplace.

That is so sad :(

Yes it is, but let's also remember that these animals are dying from a degenerative brain disease. What Norway is planning is in essence what a pet owner does to an older dog or cat when their quality of life declines significantly in their latter years. There's also a risk that the disease could spread to other herds, which harms not only Norway's Reindeer population, but also its citizens food security.

I don't like the thought of culling animals either, but this is a necessary evil.
