No honest people in Pakistan

This is with reference to Rasul Baksh Rais’s article of July 14 titled, “Kaptaan, the country’s most popular leader”.

Imran Khan reminds me of the sons of textile tycoons who go to America for studies and come back empty-handed, either with a basic undergraduate degree and sometimes not even that. They do, however, return with a good English language accent. Their parents help them set up industries to run and most of them fail. And when these companies default, they always blame everything/one else but themselves.

Imran Khan says he will end corruption in 100 days if he comes to power. Most of the corruption in Pakistan, contrary to popular perception, exists at the lower levels. About half of the students in Pakistani colleges cheat. Once they graduate many go on to become (mostly corrupt) junior government officers. Almost all policemen in Pakistan take bribes. So do most Pakistani tax and customs officials. So do the people in the army responsible for procurement. Look at the prices Pakistan paid for F-16s and French military equipment, and look at the prices Taiwan paid for similar planes and equipment.

Many of the Frontier Corps junior officers managing our checkposts allow drug smugglers to pass from Afghanistan to Pakistan, and of course this is done in exchange for money. Our Supreme Court is excellent and perhaps the one good thing we have left. But the lower courts are in a shambles and people have to wait for years for their cases to reach an end. Our city and municipal services officials responsible for things like road building, drainage and water works are generally corrupt, as are those who serve in Wapda and Pakistan Railways. The list can go and on but I hope readers get what I am saying.

Where would Imran Khan get not only qualified people to replace these corrupt people, but also people who are honest? They simply don’t exist.

Imran is loved by our urban youth, mostly young men with limited knowledge, who want power. They think they can run the country with someone like him at its helm but they have no experience of such things. Right now, Imran Khan has no economic team and does not have a sizeable number of honest and seasoned politicians with him, despite being in politics for over a decade.

Is Pakistan always dishonest people in our bloods ?
Wow ... this article contradicts it self ... at first writer says their are no honest and in the end ... talking about seasoned politicians ... what a confused chap ... All you need is to be honest by your self ... you will find others in the way ... and yes if any one who try to run a 1 man show so please remember you will not live for ever ... all 1 is to need is play his part right and depart ... that's it ... this creates chain of events ... and hence things goes on ... I have tried to conclude in a few line ... not easy to understand ...

Who says there are no honest people in Pakistan. The government and the citizens are all good examples of honesty.

The politicians are always honest with themselves. Isn't this honesty to be appreciated.

The citizens are also so honest with the rascals politicians (sorry i mean their so called "leaders") that even after suffering for decades they are still honest in giving their votes to the same rascal politicians over and over again and kill other fellow citizens for the sake of the rascal politicians.

A thoroughly corrupt system is extremely difficult to change due to just the reasons you suggest -- too many people would need to be replaced and not enough exist that are both competent and incorruptible. It may be hat only a ruthless purge such as was carried out by Stalin and Mao can change a corrupt culture quickly.

I beg to differ. Prophet corrected whole society without any sort of violence.

Only 2 questions at this stage.

1. Is there a successful precedent of what you claim in the modern day world & Who is going to be running the law and order (the shariah system)?
2. What about the non-muslims in Pakistan (since Shariah is Islamic law)?

1. Is there a successful precedent of what you claim in the modern day world & Who is going to be running the law and order (the shariah system)?
yap its very much practical.in Islam punishment for any crime is very strict.basic objective of harsh punishment was
-to create fear of punishment in masses so they avoid sin/mistakes
-only respective person will get punished.
for example
-for pedophiles and gays islamic punishment is through them from mountain
-for rape is stoning.here comes four witnesses.these four witnesses are required so that there remains a balance in society.mean a women can wrongly accuse some one for money (ifm chief),destruction of his reputation etc etc.may be she had sex with some one else but accusing some one else.but practically four witnesses is not possible.in todays time to over come this problem there is science.in old times there was a method (i dont remember the exact name) in which both man and women swear on quran infront of many people and say lier should be cursed or died.and there was results.
now what exactly is wrong with so called modern world.please read following lines with open heart and before labeling me conspiracy theorist do some research
there are very powerful people who want to destroy laws, societies, cultures, rules and the flag of freedom and reform in order to achieve certain objectives.
on this topic further discussion is beyond the scope of thread.
govt and ordinary courts will implement the shariah.
2. What about the non-muslims in Pakistan (since Shariah is Islamic law)?
under shariat.only muslims are abide to follow shariat.for non muslims they will have their respective laws, for hindus hindu laws/courts same is for other.but here we are discussing islamic nation which has shariat.it is not 21st century concept.our all caliphs follow these rules.
there is verse of quran for it
for you your religion for me my religion.

now be honest which govt is more secular and champion of freedom pure islamic nation or todays self clammed secular nations.

Implementation of shariah is debatable, the countries which have no shariah system have been able to provide quick and cheap Justice.

In addition to education system, we need equal distribution of wealth. Proper documentation of economy, here in Pakistan we pay every type of tax, in other words we are forced to pay tax. But the number of people paying tax is less who actually are not willing to pay tax. Like tax is deducted from salaries (direct tax) and on every commodity we have to pay sales tax (indirect tax). My sabzi wala even earns more than me but he doesnt pay any tax.

It doesnt mean that the people living in west are happy with paying taxes, actually their system is very strong that every transaction is documented so the tax cannot be avoided, hence corruption is minimized.

Now coming back to education system, we are even taught corruption, guess how, like once someone (teacher) told me that they had some numerical of maths like a gawala buys 100 litre milk @ 10 / litre, he adds 30 liters of water in it, and he sells at Rs.10, calculate profit. Hence the kids knows, that even if he sells at his purchase price, he will still make profits.

There are no doubts about Imran Khan's honesty. The corruption is mainly driven by two factors, the greed for money and second one the greed of being famous. Imran Khan as both.

But the article says about his team. IK is honest but he is not able to have sizable number of honest people in his team. There seems no self contradiction.

The dishonest ones make sure the honest ones go away.

Pakistan is in such a rotten state...

What if any, relationship do you think, exists between the wide scale corruption at all levels in Pakistani society, and the overt enforced religiosity so evident in Pakistani society?

.
Implement the System rest follows well. As long as the system is not in place there will be corruption.
I would prefer western system that eliminate corruption to a major extend by introducing and enforcing strict laws and swift justice.

There is lots of corruption in the west. Its just that the west are sooo suttle. In UK first we had bankers who have been taking the micky and they have got away with it. Then MPs some who have been given prison sentences. Lastly and lately we have the fiasco about news international where newspapers are involved in corrupt and illegal practices including but not limited to bribing the Police. we must solve the problems we have in Pakistan without damning everyone and kicking ourselves for the thefts by zardari, shariff and co. We need to change the system where the parties are feudel based etc. Imran may be able to help but hes not that bright he could have used Musharaf's offer to set up his own network much like shariffs did with Zia.

Maybe bubble means to say we need a new prophet -- after all, since the prophet is long dead
