KARACHI: A former spokesman for an umbrella of terrorist groups responsible for much of the deadly violence in Pakistan has escaped from the custody of security forces, The Express Tribune learnt on Friday, a day after a purported audio clip of him set social media abuzz with speculation.

Ehsanullah Ehsan, the spokesperson for the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) terrorist group, escaped during an operation against terrorists being conducted on the basis of information gleaned from him, according to sources.

Ehsanullah, who became the spokesperson for the breakaway Jamaatul Ahrar faction after the TTP split, had voluntarily turned himself in to the intelligence agencies on Feb 5, 2017 – and remained in custody even since.
However, he had started sharing sensitive information with the security forces much before his surrender, the sources said.

More than two months after his surrender, Ehsanullah recorded a confessional statement on April 26, 2017 in which he had unmasked his handlers and facilitators. He had also condemned terrorist acts and the extremist ideology he once espoused.

“The so-called jihadis have misled people in the name of Islam, especially the youth,” he had said in the scathing confessional statement. “The crimes such as bombing public places and attacking schools and universities traduce Islamic teachings.”

The ex-TTP spokesperson had shared extremely sensitive and important information while in custody, which led the security forces to smash the local and international networks of the TTP and Jamaatul Ahrar, the sources said. Several terrorists from the outlawed groups were arrested based on his leads.

Has ex-TTP spokesperson escaped? Social media abuzz with rumours

Ehsanullah would have to be brought to justice, but first it was necessary to extract information from him to take the anti-terrorism operations to a logical conclusion. “Some operations are still under way based on the information shared by Ehsanullah,” the sources said.

Ehsanullah escaped during one such operation against terrorists. However, the sources added that all terrorists and extremists – including Ehsanullah – would be taken to task.

The development came a day after netizens set off a storm of speculation about a purported audio clip of Ehsanullah initially posted on Facebook and then shared on other social networking sites in which he claims to have escaped.

In the clip, the man, who introduces himself as Ehsanullah Ehsan, says he had surrendered to the security forces under “an agreement”. He further claims that he had “honoured the agreement for three years”, but the Pakistani authorities violated it and kept him and his children in prison.

The authenticity of the clip has yet to be verified, though the voice appears to be similar to that of Ehsanullah’s. He goes on to add that he would release a detailed statement later in which he would reveal details of the agreement.

There has been no official word on the audio clip or the alleged escape of Ehsanullah.

Ehsanullah was the spokesperson for the Jamaatul Ahrar faction when the Mullah Fazlullah-led TTP had carried out the most sickening rampage at the Army Public School in Peshawar in Dec 2014 massacring nearly 150 pupils and staff.

However, Ehsanullah had claimed credit for countless terrorist attacks on behalf of the TTP and Jamaatul Ahrar – among them the Wagah border bombing of 2014; the suicide attack on Christian community members celebrating Easter at a Lahore park in 2016; the killing of nine foreign tourists in Gilgit-Baltistan in 2013; and the shooting of girl education campaigner Malala Yousafzai in 2012.

Shame on the forces and officers holding him. This buffoonery is the reason why PTM keeps getting traction amongst KP folks.( Hadh haram youth also doesn't help). The officers holding him should be court martialed

An alarming situation is arising for Pakistan which would have far reaching implications internationally for Pakistan and would cause it huge embarrassment and potentially could create alarming situation.

After alleged escape of Ehsan, which is neither confirmed or denied by Pakistan officially, Hamid Mir has written the following twit.

This twit is a minefield for Pakistan.

Implications of what Hamid Mir is asking mischievously is dangerous.
He is implying that Pakistani establishment was involved in the attacks, including placing a bomb under his car.

You can guess the implications of such allegations.

Now I come to the problem Pakistani establishment/ Pakistani Army/ ISI faces.

As usual, Pakistani government and its establishment has neither issued confirmation or denial of Ehsan's alleged escape from captivity.

Why!!

Any responsible country should have issued the denial.

And if the story of his escape is genuine then, it should have explained how the escape was possible and punish the culprits.

Why Pakistan has failed to do either!!

The time of dithering is over. Hiding or shying is not an option.
Pakistan's existence is at stake.

Pakistani men again without balls!!!

Pretty sure he has escaped or has been allowed to.

In either case , they should have planned this properly and developed a cover story. Incompetence.

Hamid Mir dosn't seems to be happy with his confessions, which actually goes against the propaganda of which he was party.

Why Hamid Mir is tweeting questions, which he may have asked much earlier?

we should not blame hamid mir. if its true that he has escaped then certain questions do come to mind such as: how he managed to escape?
when did he escape?
who is responsible for his escape?
why his escape was not made public ? even reports of jail break of minor criminals become part of our news channels then why escape of such a terrorist kept from the public? the very first thing comes to mind is that someone let him escape. now who let him escape? was it a part of some part of deal?
what message it will give to the relatives of those who were killed at the hands of these basta*ds?
the nation deserves to know the truth.
the establishment and the government have bowled a full toss either by mistake or deliberately and the bowl will be hit out of the park for a mighty six by the media and relatives of those who lost their lives at the hands of these terrorists.
another shot in our own feet. lets see what more statements that mullah makes.

The reason for my posting this is for us to ask questions.
And demand who is responsible, the responsible persons should be punished.

It has been going on for far too long. It has been far too long we all have closed our eyes and ears.
Someone in Pakistan is helping the criminals to escape the country, both political and terrorists.
Why!!
Which country knows those who escape to London wouldn't come back, but still allows other to be released and escape!!
This is worse than a Banana Republic (of Pakistan).

What this means is that unless that voice message had surfaced, we would've never even known. It would've been brushed under the carpet just like that.

we should not blame hamid mir.
Can you tell me ANY country where MORON journalists write such questions to embarrass their own country? SUCH questions are usually asked by enemies!

MANY times criminals are "allowed" to escape to get to their boss! It is a common phenomena...

Only in Pakistan journalists can view it as something shocking worth degrading the country and its govt!

Seems like some limelight attention seeking questions!

Bomb under his car seems more important than Pakistan's reputation?

BTW there were so many anchors in USA who raised questions about 9/11. if you have watched the famous hollywood movie "shooter" you will find many important questions raised by the writer.

This is the standard retort from unknowing and wishful educated Pakistanis.
The UN resolutions clearly said :

1. Pakistan is the aggressor state.

2. Issue is between State of J & K and India.

3. Pakistan has to vacate all occupied territory in state and hand over the vacated territory to India.

4. India has to remove all its forces leaving aside enough to maintain law & order.

5.. India to conduct plebiscite in state.

I. Pakistan asked for time to vacate its occupation but it never complied.

The plebiscite is not an election in Rawalpindi that we can do it tomorrow. Kashmiris have no interest in joining Pakistan anymore. In fact after article 370, Kashmiris in India are extremely happy that the deep state terror will stop and they can live a normal prosperous life like the rest of India.

The lies and untruths taught to generations of Pakistani students were exposed by Prof. KK Aziz in his book murder of history.
ok than why India shy away from UN resolutions..

if I was Indian I would say in every form that Pakistan violating UN resolutions and we want plebcite and that world should help India get it done...

why is India saying no its internal methods, or bilateral method and UN has nothing to do with it blah blah..

you guys even have sanity to ask COMMON SENSE QUESTIONS ANYMORE..

Despite hours have passed and massive propaganda by PTM on social media about alleged escape of former TTP spokesperson Ehsanullah Ehsan there is no official denial by ISPR and Pak army about any such news

No denial would automatically mean that news about escape of Ehsan ullah Ehsan is true and would be a massive boost for PTM and its liberal allies in its campaign against Pakistan military

The escape of Ehsanullah Ehsan would also mean another big debacle on part of Pakistani military

I hope this news isn't true but silence by Pakistani military is saying otherwise and this would be a big defeat for Pakistan as a country
If he is in Turkey than he never escaped but was set free for deal in which he helped take out TTP leadership and give information about the command and control of the organisation and in return he won't face the law. @Areesh
