We all know vertain number of hindus went there... for religious reason or by thinking there would be better life which the believed after brain washed by their relatives in India and other bhartis agent... But they are poorest of the poor. Per capita gdp of assam is 576.. no viable industry is there.. Why should people go there??? For the house maid obviously there is a huge shortage in bangladesh as girls prefer garment or study... Just a curious question ... How much a maid earn per month in kolkata, delhi and assam as this house maid story is very popular among the bhartis here...

She is a Muslim. We employed her because she agreed to work cheap. She's young . Should be 18-25. See generally a maid charges about 500 Rs in Guwahati. Don't know about Kolkata or Delhi. She agreed to do the job for 250. My mum agreed. Yea..there are lots of Hindus who migrated in 1947/1971 or even after that. Everyone irrespective of religion who migrated to India before 1971 are considered as Indian Citizens.

That's because the poor of Bangladesh come for better opportunities. They at first come to Assam, work for a while and proceed to the high economy states. That's why I said before that Bangladeshis are present as fas as in Noida.

@Sami I personally believe that the Bangladeshi house maid thing in India is a by product of Human trafficking from Bangladesh into India. There were reports that about 300,000 Bangladeshi women and children were trafficked into India and some 200,000 Bangladeshi girls and Women were sold in Pakistan! Lot of these women run away from their tormentors and do whatever menial jobs they can get in other cities. You probably will find this hard to believe, but I read this on United Nations website.

I have found this ad for gauhati house maid.. salary is 500-700 Rs... Either those maid go to assam to become a house maid... either they are so cheap and had to go their for family reasons or they are fools as in bangladesh specially in dhaka house maid gets atleast 1000 Tk to around 3000 tk that I have seen so far. Ridiculous claim...to become house maid people go to assam...

May be cheap people like you think for 250 rupee people will go to India... For your info minimum charge of house maid in bangladesh as far as I know is 100o to 3000 taka... we have 2 house maid... 1 is only 13 years get 1000 another the one who is little bit elder get 1500 Tk....

That none of baniya hindu can even think of giving in specially poor backword place like assam.

Apart from that there are a huge demand of bd girls to work in middle east and malaysiya as a house maid..

As I said lot of these unfortunate women end up escaping, and go work in other cities, mostly as maids and cooks. In cities like Mumbai and Delhi maids easily make over Rs 5000. They are not full time maids, they will come to your house for an hour, quickly do the cleaning washing, and go to the next house, they charge like 400-500/month/per house. Unfortunately there is no fixed rate of pay for them though, so some do end up getting exploited and work for pittance.

I talked about full time maid... they also get free food and accommodation...

N for part time house maid they charge 300 to 500 taka per work... n work at least 4 to 5 places... 2 work in each place will yield 3000 to 5000 tk

Nice stuff... but salary is not that different between dhaka and mumbai if you take in to account living expenses... depending on area as I said above part time maid charge 3000-5000 tk a month which in mumbai that I have seen charge around 3000-4500 rs. But I have seen those who are seeking job using internet... But if anyone goes from a village ... or as an illegal migrants hardly will have that and language skill. Other thhen that any sensible family will not keep any unknown person or an illegal migrants as a house maid... as it is a crime and chance of robbery and theft is high.

Any one who is intelligent will be a garment worker in Bangladesh instead of a house maid in bombay or delhi (not assam which is a poor backword region) as becoming a house maid there salary will be constant...but in garment there is prospect of increase of salary with better work.

Coming to migration during liberation war, the refugees have been given citizen status since long and are counted in census as such, except for few unfortunate cases. So sell that snake oil somewhere else.

As with the number of illegal BDs, I can't be sure of the numbers. However, having one of the largest Muslim ghettos not far from my house, and seeing it teeming with BDs, I can safely say that there are certainly way more than a 'couple of hundred thousand' illegal BDs in Kolkata alone.

New Delhi, July 23: The Union home ministry has rubbished its own statistics of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Assam and Bengal.

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi had earlier protested to Manmohan Singh about the home ministry presenting inflated figures of Bangladeshi immigrants in his state. This had prompted the Prime Minister to indicate he would have the ministry take a relook at the statistics.

Today, minister of state for home Sriprakash Jaiswal said in a statement tabled in the Rajya Sabha that his ministry’s statistics for Assam and Bengal were unreliable and based on hearsay.


He was referring to figures he had tabled in the upper House that said Assam was home to an estimated 50 lakh illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Bengal another 57 lakh. The figures were based on estimates made by the Group of Ministers on security headed by former deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani.

Jaiswal’s “correction” of his reply to Parliament last week, however, did not question the credibility of statistics relating to other states.

Like Delhi, for instance, which has an estimated 3.75 lakh illegal Bangladeshi immigrants; Nagaland 59,500; Tripura 3.25 lakh, Meghalaya and Orissa 30,000 each, Bihar 4.79 lakh, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands 3,000.

Jaiswal’s reply had put the number of Bangladeshi immigrants in India in December 2001 at 1.2 crore.

The minister of state today suggested he had given the figures without noticing a clarificatory note from the field organisation (intelligence agencies).

He set out to trash his ministry’s figures, claiming that this “clarificatory note” made it clear that the reported figures “were not based on any comprehensive or sample study but were based on hearsay and that too from interested parties”.

But the figure of 4.79 lakh on bihar really surprised me as it is the most poverty sticken region of India with 81% people live below poverty line...has a per cpaita gdp of only around 300 usd... Only a foolish or nonsense people will go there.
