Nigeria mulling Sri Lankan example to fight terror - Yahoo News

A high-ranking military delegation from the South Asian island nation, led by Chief of Defence Staff General Jagath Jayasuriya, was in the capital, Abuja, to meet their Nigerian counterparts to share experience and expertise.

The visit came after Pakistan's President Mamnoon Hussain held talks with his opposite number, Goodluck Jonathan, on Tuesday and the leaders pledged greater co-operation in defence and counter-terrorism.

Sri Lanka, with Jayasuriya as army chief, brought its decades-long civil war with ethnic Tamil Tiger rebels to an end in May 2009 after a devastating military onslaught.

But the country's military has been dogged ever since by allegations that it killed 40,000 Tamil civilians in the terrifying final days of the conflict and claims, which it denies, that it committed war crimes.

According to a statement from Nigeria's defence headquarters, Jayasuriya told delegates there were similarities between the security situation in Nigeria and Sri Lanka at the height of the conflict with the Tamil Tigers.

Nigeria's Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, said they were "seriously considering the counter-insurgency experience of the Sri Lankan military with a view to identifying those areas that could be operationally beneficial to Nigeria in its battle to defeat terrorism", the statement added.

Sri Lanka was "acclaimed as having achieved the reputation of effectively defeating terrorism in its territory", it added.

During a briefing session, the Sri Lankans told their Nigerian counterparts about "total security", which was described as "the translation of all the nation's assets into military power to counter the scourge of terrorism".

"They suggested that the military needed to enjoy the support of the entire country in its efforts to counter terrorism," defence spokesman Chris Olukolade said.

Nigeria's military has been criticised for its handling of the five-year-long Boko Haram insurgency, with the militants apparently able strike at will across swathes of the northeast, with little resistance.

Human rights groups have also accused the army of committing atrocities, including the extra-judicial killing of Boko Haram suspects, as well as abuses including torture in detention facilities.

A state of emergency was imposed in the three northeast states worst-hit by the violence last May but initial apparent gains appear to have been lost, with Boko Haram holding sway over remote rural areas, forcing thousands to flee.

Nigeria's military is currently leading the hunt for more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram on April 14, alongside international partners.

Note: It was General Sarath Fonseca that commandered the troops during g Eelam war IV, Not Gen Jagath Jayasuriya.. Gen Fonseca fell off with the Rajapaksa regime later on political grounds

nigeria needs to resolve the terrorism problem quickly

No developing country will be able to eradicate terrorism as long as the blood sucking west funded INGO's keep leeching the blood of their citizenry in the guise of human rights, Which has become nothing but a political tool and an industry worth billions

Mulling? They're still mulling?

Problem might be the immense pressure by third party actors as the article suggests.. Pakistan is facing the same, Lanka had to deal with them for over 25 years while the country disintegrated.. Finally strong leadership showed the middle finger to these bastards and finished off the terrorists, Only country to do so in the 21st century

Now the second campaign have begun in London, DC, Paris, Toronto and Geneva to punish the country that told them to feck off

You guys are an island country with a very high literacy and it took you 25 years. Imagine our illiterate nation, poor and bordered with a terrorist factory country. Shit we so fucked. Atleast we are trying, what is Nigerians doing? Prince Abubu must be desperate to give off his millions.

Yes there are certain geo/political factors that may have Pakistan in a more vulnerable situation, But a strong leadership and a unfaltering aim with the majority backing can do sometimes the unthinkable.. There were pundits that said the LTTE (once the most powerful terrorist outfit the world have known) will never be able to be defeated.. It can be done

Remember SL also had to deal with a terror factory/fund base and a political establishment with nearly 80 million waiting to decapitate the country.. We're still dealing with attrition across the palk bay 5 years after the war

Literacy wasn't so good in areas that were affected by war. People were vulnerable to propaganda. For instance, once when I was travelling with my family in one of those LTTE controlled areas, I noticed that LTTE soldiers couldn't read or write properly in Tamil (their native language).

Guardian News Website - Nigerian Military To Partner Sri-Lanka On Fight Against Boko Haram Insurgency

THE Nigerian Armed Forces and Sri-Lankan military are to partner on the fight against the Boko Haram insurgence, as counter terrorism strategies have already been mapped out with a high-powered military delegation from the Asian country, Director of Defense Information, Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade has disclosed.

Olukolade made these known in a statement made available to newsmen in Maiduguri Friday.

According to the statement, “we had an exclusive brainstorming session on counter terrorism campaign with the Military High Command at the Defense Headquarters, led by Sri-Lanka’s Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), General Jagath Jayasuriya.”

Olukolade said that the Sri-Lankan delegation also had the country’s Chief of Army, Chief of Naval Staff and Chief of

National Intelligence and other high-ranking military officers, all of whom made presentations, relating their country’s experiences in handling terrorists’ insurgency.

On how to partner to end terrorism in Nigeria, the statement said: “The Sri-Lankan military delegation also considered it a good opportunity to share their experience,” noting that the situation in the country has a lot of similarity with what obtained in Sri-Lanka when it faced the problem of terrorism.

“Extensive security briefs were then delivered by the Sri Lankan Chief of Defense Staff and other Service Chiefs from the Sri-Lankan Military to explain the concepts and strategies adopted by their military in the fight against terrorism.”

The Sri-Lankan officers, according to the statement, gave the details on how their country practiced what they referred to as “total security”, which involved the translation of all the nation’s assets into military power to counter the scourge of terrorism.

They suggested that the military needed to enjoy the support of the entire country in its efforts to counter terrorism.

Responding, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh commended the visiting CDS and his delegation for identifying with the Nigerian Armed Forces in its efforts at ending insecurity in the country. He also assured the delegation that the Nigerian Military is seriously considering the counter-insurgency experience of the Sri-Lankan Military with a view to identifying those areas that could be operationally beneficial to Nigeria in its battle to defeat terrorism.

Air Chief Marshal Badeh reiterated the commitment of the Nigerian military to protecting the territorial integrity of the nation.

Politics apart... I think every country should follow SL's example in bringing the terrorism to an end. To hell with all that international treaties about HR abuse & all that. End of the day it's the host country which has to put up with all the hostility & the rest, while International community does nothing apart from lecturing!

Here a suggestion. Shed the areas which are uncontrollable and keep the more civilized country intact. Let the nomads fight themselves.

No modern self respecting country will do that.

Good luck with that - no country has yet been successful in eradicating Islamists fully.

Are you that scared of TN.

Are you that scared of TN.

Just wary.. If we were scared we wont be cracking empty skulls of their poachers day in day out.. Despite the whole lot of them crying blue murder

There is a distinct difference.. 20 million of us have a country to call our own, 80 million of them have been trying to get their own.. They first failed in India so now they're trying to get it elsewhere by hook or by crook.. So yes wary but by no means scared
