Neutrality not an option: Pakistan to choose between Qatar or Saudi Arabia?

News Analysis |

Pakistan will not cut off ties with Qatar in wake of the decision of the GCC countries to sever diplomatic relations with the Gulf country over its alleged support for terrorism in the region.

The Spokesman of the Foreign Office Nafees Zakariya said, “for now [at least], there is no change for Qatar. We will announce if there is any development on this issue.”

KSA has been generous in helping Pakistan economically and it has a large Pakistani working diaspora.

Pakistan has friendly relations with both countries and hence it puts it between the devil and the deep sea. Much of Pakistan’s predicament has got to do with personal ties that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif enjoys with both countries. His family is being probed in Panama leaks scandal where Qatari Prince Hamad bin Jasim bin Jaber Al-Thani is playing a role to rescue them. Qatari Prince Hamad bin Jasim bin Jaber Al-Thani regretted that he could not appear before the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) probing the Panama Papers case against the Sharif family as he was busy but his letter was delivered.

Sharif’s closeness with the Riyadh is well-known as he was saved and given refuge in the Kingdom when General Musharraf had imprisoned him after the coup. KSA has been generous in helping Pakistan economically and it has a large Pakistani working diaspora.

This quandary comes at a time when Pakistan is faced with severing ties with India and Afghanistan and hence it has its work cut out as the Arab countries are on the surge against Doha.

On Monday, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates cut off diplomatic ties with Qatar, causing fissures in the powerful Gulf consortium ostensibly for its alleged support to terrorism. Egypt also accused Qatar of espousing anti-Egyptian forces and ended diplomatic relations with Doha. The quartet has been joined by other countries like Yemen, Libya, Mauritania, and Maldives. Jordan has downgraded its diplomatic representation in Doha.

According to the Saudi state news agency SPA Qatar “embraces multiple terrorists and sectarian groups aimed at disturbing stability in the region, including the Muslim Brotherhood, ISIS, and Al-Qaeda, and promotes the message and schemes of these groups through their media constantly.”

The Saudi-led coalition rusticated Qatar from military operations in Yemen. The coalition’s statement accused Doha of supporting the Al-Qaeda and Islamic State terrorist groups.

Saudi Arabia also closed the border and halted air and sea traffic with Qatar, urging “all brotherly countries and companies to do the same”.

Egypt also broke off ties with the tiny Gulf state. It has closed all its seaports and airspace to Qatari vessels and planes, the country’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The Saudi Press Agency said the Saudi government would also reach out to its allies “and start the immediate legal procedures for understanding with fraternal and friendly countries and international companies to implement the same procedure as soon as possible for all means of transport to and from the State of Qatar, for reasons related to Saudi national security.”

Pakistan should choose Saudi Arabia

.
I do not think that point has come yet where it has to chose. Either Qatar(very unlikely) or Saudi has to ask them to chose or else some consequences. It could very well be that neither has a problem.

. . .
Stay neutral. Saudis are hypocrites. Dont side with them. There is no need for Pakistan to go against Qatar.

Qatar supports terrorism says Saudi Arabia. Wow!! As if its not Saudi ideology of extremism that created Al Qaeda and now ISIS.

Qatar supports Hamas. It pays them millions of dollars. Hamas is a genuine resistance against Israeli occupation. How is it terrorism? Saudi interests and Israeli interests are the same. One by one, the grand plan is destroy Middle East. It was Syria then. Its Qatar now. If Pakistan picks Saudi side, its actually is favoring Israel.

. .
Generate an understanding based fraction of civil and military leadership each supporting one of the side , relating to the recent situation civil leadership with Qatar as they are already engaged and military leadership with KSA both working in coordination to mediate the conflict and earn higher respect. Turning a blind eye would be a loss , We must not let this situation arouse as the Western world expects.

.
KSA and UAE never funded terrorists fighting Pakistan it is just a propaganda spread by Iranian lobby
Its not a propaganda. Saudis are the root cause of wahabi brand of Islam giving birth to extremism and fanatic version of Islam. Saudis are the worst enemies of islam and muslim world. No one has damaged Islam more than they have. Its an irony but reality!

.
Pakistan should play bold role and tell Saudia to stay away from mess up with Qatar. Uae had openly threatened Pakistan in recent past and took part in indian parade. We must make alliance with Turkey, Malasia to sort out issue and push them for peace in region.

Saudis have damaged their reputation and this act if escalate will eventually cost them big time. I doubt uae had ulterior motive behind it and will leave ksa when ksa will face real difficult timr

Choose Independence, Choose Pakistan!

Hi,

Only i it was that simple---. To choose pakistan---you have to make a choice---do you want to survive till you can make a stand---or do you want to go the way of syria libya or iraq.

There was no reason for the U S to take sides in the 2nd WW---there were as many influential germans in the U S as there were brits---and the older americans hated the jews like hell.

So---what made the U S chose to be on the side of the allies first and then communists second during the war---.

The problem with Nawaz Sharif is that he is entangled hard in his court cases---so he does not have the time to think of strategy---.

For that reason---he should have been removed.

Oh---by the way---the taking out of the s300 batteries in syria by the israelis---the russians allowed it to happen---they needed the israeli electronic signature of the tracking targeting and destruction of the missile batteries---so that they can upgrade to a better counter measures for their own SA missile systems---.

It is a devious world---ain't it---. The russians did not lose anything---the syrians paid for the systems---the russians gained the israeli electronic signature.

Pakistan has a golden opportunity here. To make money, peace, and more.

Step 1: Cut off Houbara hunting to all parties. Erectile dysfunctioned sheikhs will come to their senses.

Step 2: ???

Step 3: Paisa, Nobel Prize, Hazarat's Weapons dream list come true.

.
The option of Neutral not other. Stay away from blood thirsty oil stink sheikhs.

.
Neutrality is very much an option, as long as no war occurs. Pakistan's choices aren't great, but neutrality is the less of all disasters.

.
Neutral is the option because Pakistan has no choice but to observe Qatar and KSA destroying each other and the stability of Qatar/KSA in the future. Pakistan cannot get involved in their ego wars especially when Pakistan has major pressing issues at this moment.
