NATO seeks India's cooperation to tackle terror, piracy

If we have to join NATO, does that mean our Russian jets becomes useless to work on NATO operation etc?

Possibly but all of India's new planes (IAF+IN) are coming with Datalinks from BEL/THALES that can talk to all NATO/Russian kit and this is also being fitted onto existing a/c, learning lessons from Red Flag and the fact India is procuring weapons and a/c from all over the world so they needed to have commonality- which they now do.

why not join NATO?its a good deal for India.all the other NATO states want India to join but if i was an indian i would liked india to join nato as it will bring the technological base to india from westren countries help in allevating poverty bring in alot of investment and new technology to india defence sector and make the Armed forces of india much more hi tech and advanced technologies will be avalible to India without any 'if's and 'but's.But no one wants to be the only side to sacrifice so if NATO is sacrificing so it wants india to sacrifice a little as well.It will be biggest deterent for pakistan and china as well.making Indias voice to be heard much more strongly

Whatever may be the benefits joining NATO is a hard hard sell to many sections of Indian society including the military who in no way try to antagonize Russia.

During the trying times of early 90s, our policy was independent. What makes people think that we need NATO now ?

1. Pakistan was a member of CEATO for so many decades during which poverty levels didn't improve. So, we dont need to join NATO to alleviate our poverty.

2. We are already being offered F35s and have MMRCA, best SSNs from Russia, RADARS from Israel/France. Why should we join NATO ?

Good analysis and fully agree with your points from realistic view. But you know, India follows some ideals and those does not match with NATO's. Like recent raids in Libya (even Russia supported it!!!). NATO-India-Russia question is there. India has good military relationship with Russia, may be the best from Russian side specifically the JVs and other pacts they have with us. Also India has an independent foreign policy, I call it NAM-BS.


It is far better if Asia-Pacific countries set up a new org similar to NATO but with some changes.


It is very natural that against a common enemy China-Pakistan became friends but in India's case we have many ideals to follow apart from security and national interests.
