Honestly, if Russia wants to invade another country besides Ukraine, Moldova seems to be the perfect candidate. It's dirt poor and it's next to Romania and Ukraine. It's already a failed state that can hardly survive on its own. It has to either go to Romania or Russia and I think most Moldovans would pick Russia.
Russia can then install a puppet state with military bases there right next to Romania, the 10th largest NATO army. It can also be used to reinforce the Russian presence near Ukraine to defend Russia's interests there.

I think you're missing the point here. Nobody expects NATO to get militarily involved. At least not directly. Indirect involvement is definitely expected of NATO, which doesn't seem to be there. But so far, whenever Russia did decide to react to NATO provocations in its sphere of influence, NATO could do nothing in return. I'm not talking militarily now, even economically. The thing is NATO does seem to be quite weak against NATO, particularly after all the threats of crippling sanctions and warnings that they issued about attacking Ukraine.

Germany relies on Russian gas supplies. So, it's not one sided as you claim. Even if they want to reduce their dependence on Russia for energy, it won't happen over night. And Russia is too much a major play to go completely against them. Even Iran could resist the US crippling sanctions which Europeans and US allies are completely abiding by. Russia can do much better than Iran and if it breaks bad, it can cost NATO dearly.
