Nato forces kill 30 ( in ) Pakistan

NATO choppers cross into Pakistan chasing insurgents

By the CNN Wire Staff

(CNN) -- NATO helicopters crossed into Pakistani airspace from Afghanistan in pursuit of insurgents over the weekend, killing 49 people, a spokesman told CNN Monday.

Crossing the border did not violate the International Security Assistance Force rules of engagement, Maj. Michael Johnson said.

Pakistan is very sensitive about United States-led military operations on its territory.

Johnson could not say whether the insurgents were killed in Afghanistan or Pakistan, or even whether the NATO helicopters fired their weapons in Pakistani territory.

They were responding to an insurgent attack on a remote Afghan National Security Force outpost in Khost province on Friday, ISAF said in a statement.

The statement suggests that the insurgents were shooting from the Pakistani side of the border.

"An air weapons team in the area observed the enemy fire, and following International Security Assistance Force rules of engagement, crossed into the area of enemy fire," the statement said.

Johnson, the ISAF spokesman, could not say how often NATO forces crossed into Pakistani airspace - but said it had happened again Monday morning.

NATO is still getting the details on that incident, which he called "much smaller."

WASHINGTON: US attack helicopters have killed more than 30 people inside Pakistan, diplomatic sources told Dawn on Sunday.

US military sources say that all 30 – killed during a hot pursuit on Friday – were Haqqani Network fighters.

The militants, the sources said, had attacked Combat Outpost Narizah, an Afghan base eight miles from the Pakistani border in Tani district of Khost.

US forces repelled the attack and pursued the militants to their post just across the border in North Waziristan.

“An air weapons team in the area observed the enemy fire, and following Inter-national Security Assistance Force rules of engagement, crossed into the area of enemy fire,” the International Security Assistance Force stated in a press release.

“The Isaf aircraft then engaged, killing more than 30 insurgents.”

Isaf confirmed that the helicopters struck at the Haqqani Network fighters in Pakistan.

The attack helicopters launched their attack “after following the proper rules of engagement under inherent right of self-defence,” Master Sergeant Matthew Summers, a public affairs official, told reporters.

On Saturday, Isaf launched a second attack against the Haqqani Network, after taking fire in the border area. “Several additional insurgents” were killed in that attack.

The assault on Combat Outpost Narizah is the sixth against outposts in eastern Afghanistan since the end of August.

The US claims that the Haqqani Network is based near Miramshah in North Waziristan, and has close ties to Al Qaeda and other Pakistani and Central Asian militant groups.

US officials say that Isaf forces are permitted to pursue Taliban forces across the border if they are engaged in fighting or are under attack.

They said that US and Pakistani military commanders have agreed to a set of rules for hot pursuit, which says that US forces must be engaged with the Taliban or Al Qaeda as they cross into Pakistan.

US forces, however, not penetrate more than six miles into Pakistani territory.

But they can go deeper inside Pakistan if they identify the location of Osama bin Laden, Ayman al Zawahri, or Mullah Omar.

Pakistan denies having such an agreement while US officials refuse to offer on the record comments on this issue.

ISAF has used "right to self defense" as justification -- Most respondents here seem to be thinking that the Pakistani security apparatus does nto approve of this action by ISAF -- but what if they do approve? What if they find the political atmosphere entirely unhelpful and think the ISAF will not have similar constraints?

Or lets agree that the Pakistani security apparatus does not approve, how would it respond, to "right to self defense"?

Approved nor disapproved.

Had talked to concerned people there in the area last night. Its---------------------

its not a good sign we are not in a position to stretch the forces further

It doesn't matter who kills the taliban .. Pakistan Army or Nato forces ... as long as the job gets done ... it should be good enough :)

The job has to be done more efficiently and as fast as possible as the timeline for troops withdrawal is nearing.

Pakistan protests NATO airstrikes on its territory

AP

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan has criticized a pair of NATO airstrikes on its territory that killed over 50 militants, saying they were a violation of its sovereignty.

U.S. officials have said they have an agreement that allows aircraft to cross a few miles (kilometers) into Pakistani airspace if they are in hot pursuit of a target.

But Pakistan denied Monday such an agreement exists. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press release Monday that the mandate of foreign troops in Afghanistan ends at the Afghan border.

Pakistan said that unless corrective measures are implemented, it will have to "consider response options."

The airstrikes occurred Saturday in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal area after militants attacked a small Afghan security post near the border.

Pakistan has also written a letter of protest to NATO headquarters in Brussels.

Though i dont believe him but Rehman Malik said govt will probe it and if true it will be considered as attack on the country.

What is this? If this is the price to pay for aid, then say no to it.

Whats wrong with what the Americans did, they killed the worst species on the planet which we call "Taliban". People need to realize that we need every possible help we can get from the Americans, its us Pakistanis who are on the receiving side with these constant bomb blasts not the Americans whom are enjoying their cozy lifestyles half a world away from all this mess. I for one support these drone strikes, the ideal scenario would be Pak Army dealing with it but if they are not than let the Americans clean this mess up.

.
i think you are partially correct. NATO is finally making the choice between allowing safe havens in Pakistan for the terrorists and pissing off Pakistan. Looks like they are making the right choice

Right choice??? It will only increase the support for Taliban and isn't going to damage Taliban who already have an upper hand in this war. The lesser number of enemies you have the better is the chance of your survival. This is one basic rule which NATO is ignoring. As said by Taimi it would also anger in the Pakistani military and thus would make things even difficult for both America, NATO and Pakistan.

Any thing done out of frustration usually backfires.

You can call it so, but since i belong to the soil where it is going on and we see more ground realities than seeing just one aspect.

Americans are NO saints either. So far your beloved have failed to mentioned the exact area and the death toll. I wonder if they can count while sitting in those helis

Do make sense, after all, you can't just make a career of making crude remarks and think that people will be deceived all the time - you say you "belong to the soil" -- how so? I mean to the TTP also belong to the soil? and what about these Talib who mount attacks inside Afghanistan and then escape into Pakistan, do they also" belong to the soil" ? Is it bird of a feather flock together?

Listen up - it's really simple, "Daughter of the East", "Daughter of Pakistan" "belongs to the Soil" and all these characterizations will not suffice, will not take the place of a cogent argument -- Why should Pakistan care one bit what happens to these Talib, whether inside Pakistan or outside??

Since you "belong to the soil", have you not had enough of suicide attacks in Pakistani cities, Peshawar, last anyone checked is a Pakistani city, right? not a Talib city, right?

The big thing here is Sovereignty..... Drone strikes are done with a deal with ISI and others giving out locations and targets....otherwise with no ground they cant target such high value BOZOS.......

This is a clear violation of the LAW (if u know wat i mean)...... i remember an incident when NATO fired at Pakistani border check post martyring 1 or 2 Soldier(May Allah bless them.Ameen)....after tht the army and F.C was ordered to return fire with all the fire power available... and when they did NATO was shyttin there pants and begging em to stop on the wireless...

BIG WORD HERE:Sovereignty....
