NATO creeping into India

@Joe Shearer What do you think of India becoming Nato ally, Cost-effectiveness analysis of such an shift in my opinion won't be that major. Given the quantity of Indian military imports are riding on Russia's back and qualitative advantage in some areas are European tech, and in recent times and optimal cost/quality tech emanating from US. Continuing the same track would be advantageous or getting a closer Nato relations help us get into a more qualitative regime. Would it be possible to use the Nato ally as a license to get their without any ramifications with Russia using a stronger bilatral focus and assuring that there will be no degradation in Indo-Russia relations?

Wrong tree.

I suggest you look up the effects on the Pakistan Army of their joining NATO, or rather, the surrogates in Asia, CENTO and SEATO (does anyone remember these two organisations any more? or that Pakistan was a member of both?). Hint: look up Pentomic. Hint: look up artillery and armour, in the context of the PA.

I don't know why people think of supplies of equipment every time. Has it occurred to no one that south Asian military leaders have very limited experience of fighting wars, and that their ability to command anything over a battalion is seriously lacking? Read, for instance, about how the IA blundered into capturing Dhaka, and how a couple of blunders by field level officers, and their disobedience of their commander, ensured that the defence of Dhaka was exposed to the Indian Army.

I will take the opportunity to answer this. If you interact with Russian Officials and read b/w the lines of their propaganda, they are not "too worried" too being the operative word here. Russian posture is simple which is as long as India is on the Russian side when it comes to NATO vs Russia, Russia will overlook growing US-India ties when it concerns China and Pakistan.

India is behaving rationally on this by supporting Russia on Ukraine(which even China didn't do for all their bluster), abstaining while campaigning for Russia in UN silently.

I am more worried about the US pressure on India when it comes to condemning Russia. This is the price US is asking for giving India that qualitative edge which it so desires but as of now India has not committed EVEN A SINGLE WORD when it comes to Russia. India is in a position to do this because US pressure is mitigated via

- Commercial Interests - Lots of US big ticket firms are invested in India specially their silicon valley. Wall street is more China focused

- Soft power - Democracy, NRIs and so on

- Strategic Interests - USPACOM is specially worried about China and only barely muzzled by Obama due to wall street pressure. USPACOM is aggressively interested in co-opting India considering the sequestering and it's implications on future stratagems in straits. SCS and Pacific on the whole.

So to summarise - fortunately the stars are aligned in such a way that India for now is able to hedge during the current administration. A new President meaning Trump could change the equation. Russia is pretty much a know quantity and has clearly demarcated the red lines. So choice is India's

Joe with all due respect - In fog of war, such things happen. Entire WW2 was an exercise of skipping from one blunder to another if you are inclined to dissect from a critical PoV and what about US efforts in 'Nam, Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan, Mogadishu and so on? Except for GW1 which was like pitting a fire breathing dragon against grass US record does not inspire too much confidence does it?

Would it be possible to use the Nato ally as a license to get their without any ramifications with Russia...

India will not move against Pakistan without neutralizing BD first.

Lets agree on everything else but why should we want to neutralize Bangladesh first? What significance you hold when we are going to attack Pakistan??
