The nation is set to observe the National Mourning Day today (Monday) recalling the August 15, 1975, carnage, when Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was killed along with most of his family members, reports BSS.

On the fateful night of August 15, the killers brutally murdered not only Bangabandhu, the greatest Bangalee of all time, but also his wife Fazilatunnessa Mujib, sons Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal and Sheikh Russell and daughters-in-law Sultana Kamal and Rosy Jamal.

Sixteen more dear and near ones of Bangabandhu, including his brother Sheikh Naser, brother-in-law Abdur Rab Serniabat, nephew Sheikh Fazlul Haq Moni and his wife Arzu Moni, Baby Serniabat, Sukanta Babu, Arif, Abdul Nayeem Khan Rintu and Military Secretary Colonel Jamil were also not spared during the world's most heinous brutality.

President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in separate messages on the occasion paid rich tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The government has chalked out various programmes to observe the 36th martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation and National Mourning Day on August 15 in a befitting manner.

As per the programmes, the national flag would be hoisted at half-mast at sunrise at government, semi- government and autonomous organisations, educational institutions and private buildings. The national flag would also be hoisted at half-mast at Bangladesh Missions abroad. Their programmes will include discussion meetings.

The President and the Prime Minister will place wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu at Dhanmondi Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at 6:30 am on the day. The armed forces will present a guard of honour, and a special 'munajat' will be offered.

The Prime Minister will place wreaths at the graves of family members of the Father of the Nation and other martyrs at Banani Graveyard at 7:30 am.

And Khaleda Zia celebrates her birthday on National Mourning Day, even though its not her real birthday. Classy:disagree:

Khaleda, 67, cuts as many pounds cake | Politics | bdnews24.com

Dhaka, Aug 15 (bdnews24.com) – The BNP chairperson has celebrated her birthday by cutting four cakes weighing 67 pound in the wee hours of Monday, the National Mourning Day, observed to mark the assassination of Liberation War hero Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The BNP chairperson has been observing the day since 1991, when she became prime minister for the first time. However, there are confusions with regard to her actual birthday, leading to protests from various quarters not to celebrate the day on August 15.

According to her marriage certificate, she was born on Sept 5, 1945 while in her first passport it is Aug 19, 1946. But she gave the date as Aug 9, 1944 for registration for the matriculation examination. :cheesy:

A case is going on in the High Court challenging her celebration of birthday on Aug 15. A lawyer 'Suhrawardy' filed the case on Aug 20, 1997. Khaleda in 1999 filed a civil revision case seeking its cancellation.

Hammy Bhaiyya... kahan they aap? Where were you? Haven't seen u in a while... Par I wasn't active either. Aaj kal aap kahan hotey hain? Karachi mein yah Bihar mein? Nice to see u back. :)

You know, I find this very hypocritical. When Mujib was killed, there was more or less a sense of relief among the people. He has declared himself as the dictator and turned into an one party system. There was no protest, nor any sort signs of dissatisfaction throughout the country and lastly, even Bhashani has supported this killing of Mujib pretty openly. Even the Rakhi Bahani (Mujibs own soldiers) more or less, did not retaliate.
A few decades later, no one remembers all this and Mujib turns into a saint. Its sad how the public perception of can be manipulated so easily. Some of those, who spoke against mujib even within awami league, now hold senior level posts.

If someone came and butchered all your family today, and 25 years down the line you became prime minister of Bangladesh, what would you do? Would you say yeah they deserved it? Sorry for being so crude, but Shiekh Hasina is a human being too you know.

Was killing all of his family members necessary? Including kids and women?

bro, Can you read Bengali????

No sir, I can not. Why do you ask?

His family was not supposed to be killed in the coup, neither was he. But what about the killings directed and orchestrated by Sheikh Hasina? At the moment, we celebrate her brothers birthdays and every member of her family including his son. Then we have to listen her son talk about his achievement, how he achieved all his objectives w.o any help from her mother. I had enough of this bull. Then she starts demonising the Zia family, and how Khaleda zia didn't pass her metric system, and how she doesn't want others to pass because she didn't pass her metric(how logical). And she has clearly lay out the ground on the political field. Her law minister few days ago openly expressed that there are now types of political parties, one is pro liberation (awami league) and the other is anti liberation(BNP). Anyone who opposes awami league is a jamati and an anti liberation force, which means everyone in this forum who opposes her does not deserve to be in Bangladesh( again clearly stated by her party members). How can any moral, sane person with a half a brain endorse her activities is beyond me?

I frankly didn't agree with murdering him. Although he was clearly transgressing. The man should have fled to India when he had the chance.

Read The Daily Star today, it's filled with propaganda pictures and articles. Similarly could be said about other media. Seems like the AL along with their Indian friends are hellbent for autocratic rule

Giving away a national holiday just because of someone's death anniversary seems almost idolatry.

Actually, you are being crude. They weren't butchered, they were shot. Anyways, the way he transgressed - his death was inevitable. And in case you didn't know, his sons were very evil and wicked (you won't see that on wiki or any online sources).

Since she is human, would you suppose that killing Zia was justified?

In fact, she is mentally ill. You want a mentally ill leader to rule Bangladesh? Interesting.

Do we see in India a national holiday for the death anniversary of Gandhi? USA for George Washington? Do we Ghandis doing any of that?

Yes, Hasina is human, but does that mean she can just do whatever and whenever she wants? The woman has been living in a bubble for the past 40 years.

Shooting someones entire family in cold blood, including pregnant women and kid is not butchering according to you? Was the youngest son of Mujibur Rehman evil and wicked too?
