Nation’s honor not to be traded for prosperity: Kayani

if not kiyani someone else who is more amenable will become COAS .Anymore confrontation on this issue will threaten more than kiyanis COAS position that wilL BE ARMIER PRE-EMINENCE

Sometimes i get a feeling that everyone is playing their own game...and may be the main objective is different what every one shows off.
Well in that case you can be certain that the PA is not going to back off ...
I feel that may be neither US nor Pak is interested to do anything to Taliban...because Taliban...terrorism is like a golden goose for Pakistan...It can mint money from rich nation with a fear that terrorist will be created from tribal areas unless it is supported with finance and military wise....And USA need some reason to stay with its military in Afghanistan..so what can be a better reason to stay than wit a reason that they are stabilizing afghan and eliminating terrorist from Pakistan and Afghanistan...:)
What exactly is the point of having bases in Afghanistan?

Any pipelines out of the CAR's, through Afghanistan, will have to go through Iran or Pakistan most likely. The Russians pose no threat to the US, and the US already has a massive military presence around China in various Asian nations.

AM however you spin it.This is what happened and no wonder they are mighty pissed of and petraeus becoming CIA chief is one of the conrequence
What can Petraeus do that the CIA could not do before him or without him?

Does the CIA not function under the control of the civilian administration of the US and carry out its orders? And is that same civilian administration not going to be issuing orders when Petraeus takes over as CIA chief?

You are getting carried away with thoughts of 'US wrath against Pakistan'. Calm down and come back to earth for a bit.

he made himself appear as a leader, a speech that Zardari or Gilani should have given.... eerrrrrrr.......

sir your status is army chief, you are servant of the defence ministry, let the political leadership grow and have a truely made in PAKistan leadership !

we have seen you in RD case...:agree:

Zardari or Gilani didn't make the speech though, did they? So what's your problem?

As far as the Raymond Davis case goes, if it had simply been up to your Zardari and Gilani, Davis would have been out of Pakistan within a day. Only military interference delayed that from happening. And, in the end, just how far could the military go, short of a coup, could they still stop Raymond Davis and go against their own government?

petraeus as patanjali stated brings loads of experience in and Iraq compared to his predecessor. The americans have already built HUMINT along the durand border and they are gonna ure that for the droning .

They already demonstrated that during Mullen's visit by droning haqqanis network

What is stopping Zardari and Gillani from giving such speeches?

Again, who is stopping the political leadership from 'growing'? Who is preventing the political leadership from taking positions that everyone can see most Pakistanis are in favor of? Who is preventing the political leadership from enacting political and economic reforms?

What about the RD case? At what point in time was there any indication that the Army forced the PPP and PML-N to release Davis? In fact, most Pakistani liberal commentators were accusing the Army of using the media to inflame opinion against Davis and make it impossible for the PPP/PML-N to release Davis. The PPP had over a month to declare that Davis did not have blanket diplomatic immunity and put him on trial for murder - instead they fired their own Foreign Minister for taking a principled stance.

Why blame the Army chief when the political leadership, that you want to be allowed to 'grow' is completely gutless and corrupt?

---------- Post added at 02:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:38 PM ----------

See my post above. Who fired Qureshi? Who refused to make a determination on Davis's diplomatic status?

Its pretty easy to take position when you are not accountable to the country.. Like Gen Kayanai is not..

Even playing to the gallery has its uses - just look at the popularity ratings of the military vs Zardari.

And what is stopping Zardari from 'playing to the gallery'?

Typically 'playing to the gallery' is what politicians do best, since it does not involve them actually 'doing' anything.

Our politicians are apparently so incompetent that they can't even make speeches to gain public support, even if the speeches are completely insincere and filled with false promises and bravado.

Why blame the Army for this utter incompetence on the part of the political leadership?

I am surprised that playing to the gallery is being talked about as a good thing to do and you are questioning why the President and PM are not playing to the gallery.

What was Iraq? What was the surge? The much-vaunted surge wasn't some great strategical or tactical move by Gen Petraeus, it was just a mass escalation (a word that sounds less pleasant than the mysterious and novel 'surge') which resulted in American troops killing a greater number of Iraqis, resulting in less opposition to the American invasion resulting in peace. In the end, all Petraeus did was murder and scare the Iraqi people into silence.

RAWALPINDI: The Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani Saturday asserted that the nation’s honor and integrity will not be traded just in exchange for prosperity ;, Geo News reported.

“What’s in national interest and what’s not is a decision only you Pakistanis have the right to make,” the Army Chief said in his address on the occasion of Yaum-e-Shuhada here.

General Kayani pointed out that Pakistan was today going through the most tumultuous times in its history but ‘we should not let ourselves overcome by frustration and pessimism’.

“We believe in one army, one family and one nation and we will have to rise above personal interests and think for a strong Pakistan,” he asserted.

He said Pakistani nation and its armed forces are like one unit. “A prosperous Pakistan is in the interest of all …. we want to co exist peacefully with our neighbours,” he added.

Nation

The Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani Saturday asserted that the nation’s honor and integrity will not be traded just in exchange for prosperity

I'm afraid it's too late, the nation's honor or what is left of it has vanished, drifted away like an object in space, until the regressive forces and underlying troubles are met with resistance it will continue to drift away.

As for Government of Pakistan, Pakistani population must vote wisely, considering large number of the population remains poorly educated this is a challenge. As for Gen. Kayani my respect for him has sharply waned since the continuation of drone strikes, cross border raids by US special forces, RD being set free, etc. He is the General it his duty to protect the nation from enemies both foreign and domestic. If he decides not to militarily intervene against the Government he should at least apply pressure or legally intervene so should lawyers and civil society.

Pres. Zardari needs to resign or face impeachment, his cabinet must resign to. Election should be held.

The country's face is being dragged through dirt, meanwhile Pakistanis not revolting.

He may increase drone strikes or other aggressive actions, instead of waiting and watching Pakistani Military has to be proactive and be prepared to meet any hostility. Changing minds and perceptions through military action may be needed.

^ Many believe the final decision could not have been approved without ISI or Army secret approval on releasing RD. Considering RD is a CIA Terrorist Contractor, ISI certainly was involved with his investigation and activities and decisions being made regarding RD's fate in Pakistan.

^ I believe the reduction in drone strikes inside Pakistan are because of the 'results' of the RD case, which the Pakistan Army/ISI used against the US as leverage to put forward their own sets of demands. RD himself was not of too much value, it was what he represented: CIA covert ops inside Pakistan.

Your saying Pakistan, ISI, and Army need to find justification to tell CIA and USA to reduce or stop drone strikes in their own country by releasing RD!

The fact that Pakistan has to release a criminal just to reduce drone strikes is a sign of weakness and is very pathetic. What is the military there for? As if Pakistan needs to look for a bargaining chip to reduce or stop drone strikes, this is beyond pathetic this is scum.
