After almost a week-long cleanliness drive in central government offices led by Cabinet ministers, PM Narendra Modi will wield a broom on Thursday to launch the country's biggest ever cleanliness drive "Swachh Bharat Abhiyan" from Rajpath. At least 30 lakh central government employees working across the country and hundreds of school and college students will take the pledge of cleanliness at different functions.

By 2019, Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary, every city, town and village is to be 'clean', that is, they will have pucca toilets for all, safe drinking water, waste disposal systems and cleans roads & lanes.

Construction of toilets is the major priority

Construction of household toilets has been identified as one of the major focus area since 53% households in the country don't have toilet facilities, according to 2011 Census. The situation is far worse in rural areas where 69.3% rural homes have no such facility. Over 78% of rural households in states like Jharkhand, Bihar, Rajasthan, Odisha and Chhattisgarh don't have toilets.

What will it cost?
The estimated cost is humungous - in all, Rs 1.96 lakh cr, of which Rs 1.34 lakh cr will be spent to build 11 cr pucca loos in villages and Rs 62,000 cr to build 5.1 lakh community and public loos in urban areas. No budget given for toilet maintenance.

Who will fund all this?
Now, that's not very clear. Govt says it will spend Rs 14,623 cr on urban toilets, but doesn't divulge the figure for rural loos. Babus say the remainder will come from state govts, PPP projects and budgetary allocations over 5 years. Some PSUs & pvt companies have pledged financial support for project.

What will happen on Thursday?
Every minister and babu will take on the cleanliness project, many with broom in hand. Modi will lead the campaign. Most of central Delhi will be shut for motorists.

Who's the unintended beneficiary?

AAP, of course. Its netas and workers are supposed to join the campaign, brandishing jhadus, the party's symbol.

As part of the 'Clean India' campaign that Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched today, he said he had invited nine people to join the cleanliness drive and requested each of them to draw nine more into the initiative to take it viral. (PM Modi Sweeps in a 'Clean India' Movement)

To much applause from his audience at India Gate, as he named each celebrity, the Prime Minister said he had tagged in his cleanliness challenge - Goa governor Mridula Sinha, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, yoga guru Baba Ramdev, Congress lawmaker and former union minister Shashi Tharoor, actors Kamal Haasan, Priyanka Chopra and Salman Khan, industrialist Anil Ambani and the team of popular TV serial Tarak Mehta Ka Oolta Chashma.

"This is not about Modi... Modi is only one of its 1.2 billion people... this is a people's task," the PM said, urging Indians to clean every corner of the country. He said citizens needed to "change their mindset and join hands to clean up India."

The 'Swachh Bharat' or 'Clean India' campaign he said was beyond politics. "It is inspired by patriotism not politics," he said, lauding previous governments for their efforts towards cleanliness.
"If Indians can reach Mars, they certainly can clean up the country," the Prime Minister said, admitting that it was a difficult task.

"But we have five years," he said, referring to his goal of a clean India 2019, Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary

About time, India has been a filthy pig sty, now Modhi has to build toilets, and make sure there is proper sanitation for the masses, and then watch the tourist flood in. It has long been a complaint of tourist that India is a beautiful country, but that the people of the country don't care, when the people that live there and treat the country with respect that is the only time you will notice a difference.

When tourist care more about the country then the citizens should be ashamed.

Laaton ke bhoot baaton se nahin manenge!! Some 10 years back nobody was wearing helmet or seat belts. Police campaigned along with celebrities, but to no avail. Then they started to impose fine. First 100/- then gradually increase and now it is 500/-. And now every two wheeler rider is wearing helmet and four wheeler wearing their belts. SO.....

I know that it is just a symbolic gesture but cleanliness of the roads is not the major concern. Most municipalities can do that with a little bit of effort. The main problem that India faces in terms of cleanliness is waste management. That is an area which needs a major change.

First ban that bloody Pan, half of the problem would get resolved...... I lived 1 year in north Karnataka, every idiot used to eat pan and spit everywhere..... Disgusting.....When i taken a house for rent the balcony had to be cleaned several times to remove the stains of pan..... the culprit was my land lord!!!!!!
